Today, the practice has evolved into something far more complex and often misunderstood. It encompasses a vast ecosystem of global business activity: cross-border logistics, compliance, finance, risk forecasting, data analytics, e-commerce strategy, export controls, procurement, and market expansion, to name a few. 

Broadly speaking, trade no longer resembles a single career path or act of exchange. It’s a constellation of positions and activities that work together to help societies and nations survive, grow, and thrive. 

What trade means today

Because of the depth and breadth of roles involved in trade, those looking into a career in this field need to understand the full spectrum of what it entails.

In a practical learning sense, this means understanding feasibility: where to start, how to plan and build a business, and how to understand the risks.

You also need to understand the financial elements; how to fund, grow, and maintain your sales. Don’t forget marketing and selling, whether through advertising, e-commerce channels, or traditional brick-and-mortar routes.

And then, finally, the actual “doing:”

How and where are you going to create your goods, import them, export them? How and where is your business going to operate? Who are you going to hire?

Emiliano’s story: from private to government sector, from North America to South

Now a Senior Product Operations Manager at Export Development Canada, Emiliano Introcaso, CITP, began his journey in trade back in 2001 when he handled his first international shipment, an experience that sparked his realization that specialized training would be essential for long-term success.  

“As I took my first steps in international business, I realized that having a few years of experience was not enough. I needed to learn and understand why it was so important to be involved in trade and how exports can make a difference in the development of any global economy.”

That’s when he decided to pursue the FITTskills program, quickly learning and advancing from roles in manufacturing to international assignments, including relocating to Mexico to implement customs, logistics, and trade operations. Eventually, he would go on to earn his Certified International Trade Designation (CITP) and work in both private-sector and government positions.  

His roles spanned continents, from Canada and Mexico in North America to Peru in South America, and employed a wide range of skills, from supporting exporters through national funding programs to training over 2,500 students worldwide. 

Though his positions were different, his expertise in global business, export planning, and supply chain strategy remained steadfast.  

Audrey’s story: a passion for global business and supporting businesses financially

As Associate Vice-President at RBCx, Audrey Marie-Nely, CITP, began her career with a deep curiosity about global markets that took her from France to Canada and South America. After building her academic foundation in business management and international business, she pursued a master’s in innovation to better understand how technology was reshaping global commerce. 

“Technology is revolutionizing trade,” she notes. “From digital marketplaces to blockchain for supply chain transparency. I knew that to stay ahead, I had to understand how innovation intersects with international trade.” 

But it was her growing involvement in financial decision-making — helping small businesses evaluate risks, assess funding options, and tailor financial strategies for new markets — that pushed her to deepen her expertise.  

Through the FITTskills program and her CITP designation, she strengthened her command of trade finance, payment methods, and risk-mitigation tools, giving her the confidence to guide clients through the financial complexities of global expansion.  

“Understanding financing options, risk management, and payment methods is crucial in global trade. The program helped me work more effectively with key partners and strengthened my ability to support businesses in securing financial success internationally.”

Her career has spanned entrepreneurship ecosystems, international advisory committees, and leadership roles in banking. Audrey’s skillset blends financial insight with practical global trade knowledge, proving how the right mix of expertise can shape a career that crosses industries, borders, and, for her clients, all stages of business growth. 

Meetali’s story: Trade advice in the public and private sectors to help businesses thrive globally

Meetali Kashyap’s journey offers another example of the breadth of modern trade careers. She began in 2015 at the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, helping British firms expand into India by advising on market entry, regulatory hurdles, and sector-specific trade opportunities. Her work spanned everything from securing foreign direct investment approvals to shaping early-stage growth strategies, supporting companies that would go on to become well-known brands in India.  

After Brexit, she shifted into trade policy and government-to-government advocacy, negotiating market access issues and working to create fairer conditions for British businesses in India. That foundation carried her to Canada, where she served as a Trade Commissioner helping Canadian firms enter India, and later into her current role as Market Advisor for Enterprise Ireland in Toronto, guiding Irish cyber, digital tech, and creative companies toward partnerships across Canada. 

Throughout her globally mobile career, Meetali has relied heavily on expertise in market entry strategy, regulatory navigation, and client-focused advisory work. Skills she deepened through the FITTskills program and ultimately validated through the CITP designation. 

“Discussing different routes to market, types of investments, or options like greenfield or brownfield, direct or indirect channels, joint ventures, mergers, or acquisitions, has enhanced my ability to provide strategic advice to our Irish companies weighing their options in market entry.”

She also makes it a priority to keep her clients’ interests the primary focus of her work, stating: 

“I believe the essence of an international trade advisor’s role is to provide bespoke advice to clients, keeping their best interests and potential success in mind. For instance, Canada often serves as a cost-effective gateway into the North American market, offering ample opportunities to introduce new innovations. Ramon’s story: From a young entrepreneur to a seasoned President and CEO to a multi-million-dollar business

Ramon Pinto’s career reflects the entrepreneurial spirit at the heart of modern international trade. He began at sixteen in Venezuela, running a small cross-border import venture that sparked a lifelong passion for global business. After immigrating to Canada, he committed to building an ethical, market-responsive trade career grounded in serving developing markets by moving goods from regions with production advantages to places where consumers had limited access. 

That mindset eventually led him to the paper industry and to founding SOLUPAPER LLC, which he grew from $60,000 in initial capital to more than $15 million in annual sales. As the company’s President and CEO, he and his team work with major brands like Smurfit, PepsiCo, and McDonald’s. For a truly international business reach that requires truly international skills.  

“Make sure you are as clear as possible about the terms of negotiation, and clarify Incoterms because not everyone knows them,” he reminds young entrepreneurs. He also notes: 

“The obstacles will be many, but each one brings an important lesson. If you continue forward with passion and dedication, success will come. Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. If you’re able to learn from obstacles and keep your eyes on your goals, the future is yours.”

Understanding the risks and strategies needed to succeed long-term, he also understands how data and industry resilience have helped his business succeed during industry fluctuations: 

“We made decisions based on data analysis and trends, and we weren’t afraid to invest in areas that seemed uncertain. Today, that vision has allowed us to maintain a solid sales trajectory and continue moving forward despite industry shifts.”  

Other careers in international trade

International business isn’t a single career. It’s an entire world of careers, all interconnected by the movement of goods, money, ideas, and people. From compliance to strategy, from logistics to leadership, the opportunities are as wide as the global markets they serve.

A career defined by cross-sector expertise

Banksharon’s path to international trade has been diverse and multifaceted—something he views as a strength. Before joining the U.S. Embassy, he led strategic partnerships and business development initiatives at the British Council. Not only did he foster commercial collaboration between U.K. companies and foreign markets, but he also facilitated the export of U.K. goods and services and the expansion of U.K. education brands through local partnerships. 

In this role, one of his proudest accomplishments was spearheading a key B2B initiative for the British Council’s IELTS Program. The initiative was focused on reversing the decline in market share relative to competitors. For this project, Banksharon had the opportunity to design the entire program, from conceptualizing offers to creating incentive structures for partners such as test centers, institutions, and corporate clients. 

Measurable success for the British Council

The fruit of Banksharon’s hard work certainly paid off. With his plan, there was a measurable increase in market share and uptake of the British Council IELTS across B2B partner channels, demonstrating effective strategy execution from ideation to launch. 

“It was satisfying to take a project from abstract idea to measurable success,” he says.

“Seeing the market respond so positively validated the importance of a strategy rooted in partnership and insight.”

A breadth of banking and finance expertise to draw from

Before working for the British Council, Banksharon also spent over a decade in commercial banking and development finance, where he oversaw the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) portfolio within the region, managing $500 million in liability products and $200 million in risk assets. 

As part of a results-driven banking environment, he set ambitious quarterly and annual sales and relationship targets, and exceeded them. 

“I continuously surpassed those goals, quarter after quarter. This success wasn’t just about numbers; it was a meaningful reflection of my ability to build strong client relationships, upsell effectively, and navigate complex financial product offerings,” he states.

“Each achievement felt deeply fulfilling precisely because it was earned through high performance under pressure.”

The power of preparation

For professionals looking to enter international trade, Banksharon offers one clear piece of advice: preparation is everything. 

“Avoid rushing into new markets without deeply understanding local consumer behaviour, competition, laws, tariffs, labelling, and Incoterm nuances. A lack of preparation can lead to costly delays or lost opportunities.”

His pragmatic approach has been honed through years of working in an array of industries with globally focused businesses and governments. Today, he uses that in-depth knowledge in the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide strategic insight across key sectors. 

There, he develops and maintains a strong network of commercial contacts across assigned countries and sectors while identifying and fostering business opportunities and partnerships in the interest of U.S. companies. 

The value of international business certification for Banksharon

Banksharon pursued the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation as a way to formalize and validate the breadth of his experience. 

“What appealed most to me was how it validates not just knowledge, but also the ability to apply complex trade principles, from regulatory compliance to financial logistics, not just in theory, but on real-world projects.”

The CITP represents an important international business certification, giving professionals a credible and globally recognized credential that signals expertise, integrity, and strategic understanding in trade.

For Banksharon, it was a natural next step to strengthen his professional standing and global perspective. 

A proud achievement that expands market opportunities

Earning his CITP marked a proud milestone. “I feel excited and proud to have earned the designation,” he shares. “I foresee it opening new doors in new markets.” 

Through his leadership, Banksharon is opening markets for U.S. businesses, attracting investment, and building lasting partnerships across governments and global institutions. His track record makes one thing clear: he doesn’t just open doors, he walks through them with purpose and impact.

The seeds for a career in international trade were planted at a young age for Joshua Boileau. Watching his family’s steadfast work ethic as a young boy made international trade a natural extension of the values he was raised upon. 

“I grew up in a household of blue-collar workers who instilled a sense of work excellence and dedication that inspired me to work in a career that amplified those skills. With international trade, I saw the connections with work ethic, dedication, and attention to detail.”

To him, work such as navigating regulations, supply chains, and cultural differences requires commitment, and for international businesses they are the glue that holds everything together. 

Joshua saw parallels between how international trade operated and how his family negotiated contracts, maintained client trust, and ensured quality. These similarities cemented his choice to pursue trade as a career path. 

Seeing the scale of world trade in action

Experiencing the scale of global trade, especially when it came to product management and marketing, was a favourite part of Joshua’s storied career. “I watched as live orders came in from international markets I’ve never been to. There was something deeply rewarding about knowing that a product team in Ottawa could be making an impact so far from home,” he says. 

Working at Shopify marked another pivotal chapter in his path, one that taught him a powerful lesson about perseverance. After the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Shopify waived platform fees for Ukrainian merchants and Joshua saw firsthand the resilience of entrepreneurs in crisis while he helped Ukrainian merchants set up their online stores.  

“It was inspiring to see fashion, food, health and wellness, and retail shops pop up. A resilience through war and the pandemic.” These experiences broadened his understanding of what trade can achieve, not just operationally, but on a deeply human level. 

Pivoting small businesses in times of change

Joshua regards reacting to tariffs as one of the most interesting aspects of his career.

“Pivoting a business is incredibly difficult, especially in a small business environment. I feel the weight of change much more immensely than if I worked in a large company.”

But, by shifting focus to new markets, he has been able to help his employer open new and interesting paths. “Interacting with new international regulatory bodies, creating international market entry analyses, and creating international marketing plans has been stressful but rewarding,” he says. 

Start with the basics

For anyone entering the field of international trade, Joshua has one piece of advice that he learned from the current leadership at White Cross, James Dumont:

“You need to learn how to crawl before you can run.” 

International trade, he believes, demands patience, commitment, and a desire to do things the right way, at the right times.  

Learning from instructors filled with passion

Joshua completed the FITTskills program through Algonquin College, one of FITT’s educational partners. His favourite part of the FITTskills program was the people who taught it. 

“The professors had so many years of experience, skills, and cultural awareness that it exuded out of them.” 

He credits the courses with deepening his intercultural understanding, a critical skill in both e-commerce and global operations. 

“I came to realize that the classic business etiquette you see in other fields was dwarfed by the intercultural relationships in international trade.”

His favourite course, International Sales & Marketing, was particularly influential. Inspired by a professor who “had a passion for business and marketing that helped us find our own pulse in international trade,” Joshua pursued an optional co-op placement in South Africa, where he experienced culture shock, global marketing dynamics, and the intricacies of international marketing firsthand. 

These lessons would come into play later in his career at Shopify, where he saw “the power of international trade resilience, adapting to a new global norm in e-commerce.” 

Why he pursued the CITP designation

For Joshua, the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation represents something essential in today’s world: credibility. 

“There’s something to be said about credibility in a world that has shifted to creating policies and legislation backed by non-credibility. I want to have a credible voice, backed by a world-recognized professional organization, when dealing with international brands, brokers, reps, and supply chains.”

His comments highlight how, increasingly, designations like the CITP instill confidence in both the professionals who earn them and the partners who work with these professionals, creating a win-win scenario for both. 

Earning the designation also felt meaningful and forward-looking for Joshua. 

“I’m excited about where the CITP designation will lead me. I’m passionate about integrating international trade and my degree in sustainability.” 

Looking ahead: a global vision for e-commerce

Now, as E-Commerce Manager for an online pharmacy retailer, Joshua sees enormous potential for international diversification and the CITP designation strengthens that vision. 

“I see my CITP designation extending my current role in E-Commerce Management in online pharmacy retail. There is a lot of work to do in diversifying our international markets.”

With a blend of technical expertise, global awareness, and human-centred values, Joshua is poised to help shape the future of ethical, sustainable, and globally connected commerce.

Emmanuel Ediale’s path into international trade was built on early exposure to global operations and a growing desire to understand the mechanics that power cross-border business. From the get-go, he knew what he wanted to do. 

“My career in international trade began immediately after college with a finance role at a logistics company,” he explains. “I was responsible for managing the financial aspects of cross-border logistics operations, as well as other business activities the company was engaged in at the time.” 

This early experience gave him a practical foundation in trade finance, operational risk, and the movement of goods across borders, knowledge that would influence every step of his career moving forward. 

Growth, standards, and developing trust along the way

Looking back, Emmanuel’s favourite professional moments are tied not just to milestones, but to momentum. 

“Managing a project from inception to completion, participating in the transition from existing standards to new or revised standards, for example, IFRS 4 to IFRS 17 (an International Financial Reporting Standard for accounting) for major financial institutions, and maintaining positive relationships with colleagues throughout my career.” These are all among some of his favourite aspects of his work journey. 

These efforts showcase Emmanuel’s ability to leverage his financial expertise, international trade background, and business acumen to create measurable value while strengthening operational efficiency and supporting strategic decision-making within forward-thinking organizations.

His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed either. Among Emmanuel’s proudest accomplishments are garnering recognition as the “best employee” at his firm’s year-end celebrations, in addition to consistently earning performance-based bonuses from past organizations he’s worked for. More importantly, he’s proud to have served “as a trusted and positive reference point for both customers and colleagues.” 

These acknowledgments reflect not only his technical strength, but also his reputation for reliability and integrity—qualities that have followed him from one position to the next. 

Career advice: reach out for resources

International trade is filled with resources, networks, and specialized institutions. But like many professionals entering the field, Emmanuel didn’t know how much support existed. 

“One thing I wish I knew earlier was the role of EDC (Export Development Canada) and other crown corporations to SMEs… people tend not to have an idea of resources available to them for both their business and sales expansion. This was an eye-opener for me.”

Understanding these tools (financing, insurance, risk mitigation, and global market guidance) shifted how he viewed trade and expanded what he thought was possible for Canadian businesses. 

How FITTskills shaped his understanding of global business

When Emmanuel enrolled in the FITTskills program, it marked a turning point in how he approached international trade. “These courses have helped my career significantly, especially in understanding major trade concepts. The knowledge I’ve applied so far has been invaluable.” 

He completed courses in international trade, business finance, sales, and marketing—each giving him a new lens through which to understand global operations. But one course stood above the rest: 

“International Market Entry Strategies was my favorite course. I believe this was the background to understanding the map flow of international trade. The professor who taught the course was awesome, and it was really easy to follow through the coursework and complete all assessments as at when due.”

The coursework expanded his analytical toolkit, sharpened his understanding of global competitiveness, and strengthened the strategic mindset he brings to his work today. 

Why he pursued the CITP designation

Like many professionals, Emmanuel wanted a way to formalize his expertise and stand out. “I chose to apply for the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) to compete ethically amongst other professionals in trade as well as collaborate with other great minds through the CITP community.” 

An accomplished trade professional with deep knowledge already, he views the designation as a gratifying experience. “I feel so fulfilled and honoured. It has been a long journey, so touching the finish line is rewarding to me.” 

The CITP has already begun shaping his long-term ambitions too. 

“I see my CITP designation paving the way for me in the trade industry in its entirety. I believe I stand a good chance of being an international diplomat, trade commissioner or advisor and a general business mogul when the time is right.”

In his current role at Unibrew, Emmanuel is making use of his FITTskills training, specifically in bringing in the financial aspects related to greenfield and brownfield market expansion. 

With a strong record of driving results across the banking, insurance, retail, telecommunications, logistics and food & beverage sectors and a career that spans key areas such as underwriting, business management, capital budgeting, financial analysis and reporting, risk assessment and more, there is no doubt that Emannuel will continue to lead the way in finance and trade in his current role at Royal Unibrew.

And the people who inhabit these spaces tend to be generous with their time and insight. Trade, after all, has always been about exchange and reciprocity, so the people more often than not reflect this spirit. 

With that context, here are some of the strongest mentorship, internship, and accelerator options available in international trade today: 

1. International Trade Centre (ITC) – SheTrades & Ye! (United Nations/WTO)

The ITC, a multilateral agency with a joint mandate with the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, runs some of the most globally respected mentorship, internship, and fellowship programs for aspiring trade professionals. Applicants undergo a detailed process involving assessments, interviews, notifications, and appointments. Those selected will become part of “an organization that supports micro, small and medium-sized businesses to compete in global and regional value chains through capacity building, training, trade-specific publications and sharing of trade intelligence.” 

Those hoping to work for the ITC, can look forward to work that “focuses on equipping micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to become more competitive in global markets. In this context, ITC translates the business implications of multilateral trade agreements for businesses, so they can understand, shape and benefit from trade rules. ITC thereby helps to build vibrant, sustainable export sectors that provide entrepreneurial opportunities, particularly for women, youth and vulnerable communities.”   

The ITC also offers mentorship through their ‘SheTrades’ initiative, which supports women-owned businesses entering or scaling in international markets. Participants receive mentorship from trade experts on topics like pricing, packaging, export compliance, and market access. For women in emerging economies, this program is often transformative, helping bridge gender gaps in global commerce. 

For younger individuals, ITC’s Ye! Community focuses on youth-led SMEs. Its mentorship network connects young founders with international business advisors, finance mentors, and export specialists.  

The initiative has a specific focus on green businesses through the Ye! Youth Ecopreneur Programme (YECO) as well.   

2. UNCTAD – EMPRETEC (40+ Countries)

UNCTAD’s EMPRETEC program is one of the longest-running entrepreneurship development initiatives in the world. Active across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, it blends mentorship, behavioural skills training, and practical business development. 

EMPRETEC is built on a research-backed methodology developed at Harvard that focuses on the psychological traits of successful entrepreneurs. But it goes further by breaking barriers to global market access, something many founders in developing economies struggle with. 

Participants gain mentorship from seasoned executives, trade development specialists, and local business leaders who understand cross-border challenges firsthand. 

3. OWIT International (Global)

Established in 1989, OWIT, the Organization of Women in International Trade, is one of the most established global networks in this space, spanning over 25 chapters across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. 

What makes OWIT unique is its community: senior trade lawyers, compliance specialists, diplomats, supply chain leaders, and entrepreneurs who show up not only to teach, but to listen. 

Their 2,000-plus members “impact hundreds of millions of dollars in trade and business transactions annually. OWIT’s focus is on adding value to our corporate, mid-sized, small business and individual members around the world.”  

They also have a “Virtual Chapter” for individuals involved in international trade and business who do not have access to a local OWIT chapter where they reside or work.  

Those who wish to join, must first join a local or virtual chapter for a fee.  

What they offer:
• One-on-one mentorship
• Leadership circles
• Industry panels (trade law, global supply chains, export strategy)
• Young-professional events and workshops 

OWIT’s mission is to advance women in international trade, but its membership includes diverse professionals at different stages of their careers.  

4. Startup Canada & Startup Women (Canada)

Startup Canada’s mentorship programs are designed for entrepreneurs in the early stages of global expansion. Many are year-long programs offering structured support, 1:1 mentorship, workshops, and access to networks across the country. 

Startup Women is particularly impactful, supporting women founders with export ambition through curated mentorship sessions, industry roundtables, and direct guidance from trade advisors—including those from EDC and the Trade Commissioner Service. 

Their 1-on-1 sessions connect “women entrepreneurs with more than 100 peer-to-peer advisors and subject matter experts to build your business and provide tailored guidance. Mentorship participants take advantage of this networking opportunity to gather and discuss candidly on the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs face.” 

Startup Canada has also partnered with Pizza Hut have partnered to support entrepreneurs with the Startup Canada Equal Slice Program.  Through funding, educational webinars, and business resources the program works to break down barriers by offering pitch competitions, tailored tools, and learning opportunities to help entrepreneurs grow and scale their businesses. 

5. Techstars (Global)

One of the world’s most influential accelerators, Techstars runs vertical programs focused on supply chain innovation, logistics and mobility, fintech and payments, sustainability and climate. 

As a global startup accelerator and venture capital firm, it provides early-stage companies with funding, mentorship, and a support network to help them grow. It works by running a three-month mentorship-driven accelerator program where selected companies receive seed capital and access to a network of investors, mentors, and partners in exchange for equity. The program includes workshops, resources, and fundraising opportunities, culminating in a final pitch event where companies can present their progress to potential investors.

7. Supply Chain & Logistics Bodies (Global)

Organizations like CILT International (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport), ASCM (Association for Supply Chain Management), and WISTA International (Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association) offer mentorship, leadership accelerator, or junior job opportunities that combine technical depth with global networks. 

For instance, CILT states that “Some countries in our CILT family have already developed successful mentoring programmes whereby professionals are giving time back to CILT to help the next generation reach their potential.” 

Whereas, ASCM aims to enhance “knowledge, share ideas, and build connections” through their Mentoring Program. Their online networking and career development tool helps individuals “find, connect and share experiences with others.” Applicants can apply on their official website, but applicants must be ASCM members.  

WISTA, on the other hand, in conjunction with the IMO, the International Maritime Organization (a United Nations agency that governs international shipping) have a leadership accelerator program with Maritime SheEO. It is available to Women in Maritime Associations and National WISTA Associations. 

On their website, they state that “The Maritime SheEO leadership accelerator program was “specially curated and designed with the objective to 

• Offer management knowledge and skills to help women in the maritime industry move to leadership roles. 

• Enable women to become part of an active and trustworthy network of female executives who support and inspire each other along their leadership journey. 

• This program aims to equip women with the right skills to enable them to rise to leadership positions. The industry needs more women leaders, and this will also help create more role models and pave the way for more women to enter and aspire to apply for Board positions.” 

8. EDC (Export Development Canada)

For students looking to gain on the job exposure while still immersed in academia, EDC offers student positions 3 times a year. Students can opt for work or co-op opportunities, where they can expect to “dive into a fast-paced work environment with real, challenging assignments.” Most positions are finance-related, but there are also placements in management information systems, risk management, insurance, computer science, project management, communications, marketing, human resources, economics, sales and environmental science.   

EDC also offers scholarships for individuals studying international business and for community leaders who represent inclusive, diverse, and equitable workforces. 

Movement defines progress in the field, so keep pushing forward

Global trade will continue to evolve—its rules rewritten by geopolitics, its logistics reshaped by climate realities, its transactions transformed by technology. But one thing remains unchanged: the field is powered by people who are willing to learn and willing to share what they know.

Audrey Ross, CITP, for example, decided to go for the CITP based on the advice of her instructor. She was already in university when she landed a job role that dealt with the inner workings of international trade.

“I got this job and I was enjoying it. I got to work on everything from product development and global sourcing to procurement and buying and doing style specs and costing and all these fun things. Then, I decided about 5 or 6 years into my work that I wanted something external to have more market knowledge, because I was getting a lot of great knowledge internally, but I wanted that external professional information.”

She signed up for an Advanced International Trade Certificate at George Brown College in Toronto and started doing classes on evenings and weekends. She didn’t realize it at the time, but the courses she was taking were FITT accredited. She found them to be interesting and hands-on, giving her more insight into the practical applications of international trade on an international level. About 9-10 courses in, she decided to ask her instructor for advice:

“I said to him ‘What do you recommend my next step be career-wise? Should I really buckle down and do a degree or an MBA, what do you think? He turned to me and said, ‘You need to get your FITT Diploma and become a CITP.’ I was really anxious about not having a degree, and he was like ‘No. You don’t need that. You want this professional designation because it’s well recognized, you’re going to meet great people, it’s a great community and it’s international. It’s not just focused on what’s happening locally. It’s completely international.’”

This turned out to be the right decision for Audrey. She has now been working in the field of international trade at Orchard Beauty for over 20 years and has been a CITP for 7.

“The FITT program is so comprehensive. It really covers such a good breadth of what you’re going to experience in business. So, in a labour market where you’re challenged to hire, I’m struggling to hire qualified candidates myself, when you see what my fellow CITPs are doing, you’re looking at very successful growing enterprises, and it can really level up your company with expertise and knowledge.”

She adds “The way a lot of entrepreneurs and businesses get started, it’s about the customer and it’s about the sale. And that doesn’t really mean much until they actually get into how they’re going to fulfil the sale when it’s in another country and what’s involved in that. Julien Rosan, CITP and Trade Commissioner, Global Affairs Canada, agrees wholeheartedly. At the beginning of his career, Julien relied on his knowledge and interpersonal skills to find a job. But after many years in the field, he now sees how crucial it is to network, seek referrals, and build professional relationships. Nowadays, when he receives LinkedIn requests from students seeking advice or internship connections, he makes it a point to remain as approachable and helpful as ever.  

“I love this proactive approach and always keep my door open as I can see myself in them 10 years ago.”

Internships: more than a foot in the door

Even a short internship can ignite a new career. Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Ursula Burns and Steve Spielberg all performed internships, with many of these experiences launching the legends into their lifelong careers.

Those who stay in the field long enough often say the same thing: the work itself becomes the teacher. 

“In the beginning, everything seems overwhelming” says Ramon Pinto, CITP, President & CEO, SOLUPAPER LLC whose $60K startup eventually evolved into a multimillion-dollar cross-border company. But with work and patience, success can come: 

“Instead of taking quick, expensive routes, we focused on sustainable expansion, reinvesting our profits and seeking financing only when absolutely necessary. It wasn’t easy, and many times it felt like we wouldn’t make it, but every financial hurdle taught us to be more resilient and manage our resources efficiently. The key was always keeping the long-term vision in mind, knowing that each sacrifice today would bring us closer to success tomorrow.”  

He describes the trade career as a constant exercise in judgment; reading markets, picking partners, understanding risks, sensing change before it arrives. 

“We made decisions based on data analysis and trends, and we weren’t afraid to invest in areas that seemed uncertain. Today, that vision has allowed us to maintain a solid sales trajectory and continue moving forward despite industry shifts.”

He adds that,

“If you never stop learning you increase your opportunity to grow, adapt, and improve.”

Carving a path is a unique experience for each individual, but effort always drives success

Across a myriad of professional trade careers, it’s clear that no one path is identical. Some enter the field through in-class instruction, while others take on mentorships and internships.

Many people don’t fully grasp business on a global scale until they begin running one themselves. For Nathaly Mesa, CITP, years of running small businesses opened the door to international opportunities—and sparked a new fascination. As she applied her business management background in a global context, it became clear that international trade was the natural next step in her career. 

“I began my journey in international trade out of a deep interest in global markets and how businesses expand across borders,” she explains, adding that, while running businesses, “I often encountered opportunities that involved international clients and suppliers. This sparked my curiosity and motivated me to explore the field further.” 

To advance her expertise, she pursued the FITT Diploma in International Trade, a transformative step that, in her words, “gave me both practical tools and strategic insights into global business operations.” 

Combining two passions: global trade and sustainability

Nathaly is a fan of international business and green practices, so when she had the opportunity to work with a sustainable furniture company, she jumped at the chance. 

“One of my favourite stories from my career was working with a furniture company whose concept immediately caught my attention,” she says.

“Their main material was recycled wood, which really resonated with me because it combined two of my biggest passions: international trade and supporting businesses that contribute to environmental conservation.”

Being involved in their international expansion was both exciting and meaningful, she says. She had the opportunity to support them in navigating logistics, understanding trade compliance, and building relationships with overseas partners. Recognizing that her contributions helped a sustainable business scale internationally, while also promoting eco-conscious practices, made the experience “incredibly fulfilling,” she adds. 

Championing Colombian craftsmanship around the world

Nathaly reflects on another project with pride, one that was significant to her—not only from a business perspective but on a cultural and personal level too.  

Working with artisans from her home country, she led internationalization campaigns for their handcrafted products: 

“I worked closely with local artisans, whose incredible craftsmanship reflects Colombia’s rich cultural heritage. Through hard work, strategic planning, and a deep respect for their work, we were able to introduce these unique products into demanding international markets in Europe and North America.” 

“Seeing them embraced abroad was incredibly rewarding,” she reflects. “It confirmed my belief in the value of combining international trade with cultural preservation and ethical business practices.” 

This work underscores her approach to trade not simply as a means of profit, but as a platform to elevate culture, sustainability, and community empowerment. 

A career shaped by cross-cultural intelligence

Looking back, Nathaly now understands the importance of cultural competence and relationship-building in business. It is a lesson she wishes to impart to new professionals in the field of trade. 

“One piece of advice I wish I had known when I started working in international trade is the importance of building strong cross-cultural relationships from the very beginning.”

She goes on to explain that, early on in her career, she placed heavy focus on logistics, compliance, and strategy, “which are, of course, critical,” she emphasizes. “But I later realized that understanding cultural nuances and building genuine trust with international partners can be just as important for long-term success.” 

Now she takes the time to learn about different business practices, communication styles, and cultural expectations, and this, she believes, has helped her avoid misunderstandings, strengthen partnerships, and ultimately close better deals. “If I had embraced that earlier, I believe some challenges could have been turned into opportunities more quickly,” she says.

As a young newcomer to Canada, navigating both a new country and profession, Sajal Takhi learned an important lesson about professional success: behind every shipment, every cross-border lane, and every international contract are people. And to connect with them, you need to understand their needs and challenges.

With over seven years of experience in asset-based transportation, plus a CITP certification and a Master’s in Finance, Sajal has combined his learning with practice to become the expert that he is today.

A natural calling to logistics and transportation

Sajal’s journey into international trade began naturally. He started by coordinating shipments across Canada and the U.S., managing complex cross-border operations and building relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors. Through this work, he became fascinated by the intricacies of global trade, whether it was handling customs clearance documentation, resolving business disputes, or managing financial risks associated with international transactions. Every challenge and every complex detail drew him in.

His academic background, including a Master’s in Finance, further fueled his interest in international trade by giving him critical skills in financial analysis, risk management, and strategic planning, knowledge that would prove invaluable in his logistics roles. A large part of his career work has been in developing market expansion strategies and optimizing operations to maximize profitability.

Impactful advice about empathy and understanding

One of Sajal’s most powerful stories comes from his early years as a new immigrant in the workforce. At 19, newly arrived from India and working in a diverse Canadian environment, he found himself struggling to connect with colleagues—a challenge many newcomers quietly face.

“Recognizing this, my supervisor told me that to succeed professionally, it was essential to understand the needs and challenges of both customers and colleagues. This advice profoundly impacted me at an early stage in my career, prompting me to cultivate emotional intelligence and empathy.”

It was a simple concept that reshaped his entire approach to work. Sajal began actively building stronger relationships. “I realized that by understanding and valuing the perspectives of those around me, I could build stronger relationships and navigate workplace dynamics more effectively. These skills have become foundational to my professional approach, as I believe that empathy and kindness are key to connecting with others and achieving success.”

Driving significant business growth and winning contracts

Throughout his logistics career, Sajal has contributed to several major projects that improved operational efficiency and drove business expansion.

Notable achievements include winning contracts from major clients such as Burnac Produce and High Liner Foods. These achievements were the result of strategic business planning, negotiation expertise, and strong customer management skills.

“By analyzing market trends, optimizing freight routes, and aligning our service offerings with client needs, I was able to present value-driven proposals that secured these lucrative contracts.”

Another milestone came during the expansion of Sharp Express Inc., where Sajal expanded Sharp Express Inc.’s market presence by diversifying operations beyond traditional reefer loads into dry freight, auto parts, and electronics. “I proactively identified new opportunities, optimized our pricing strategies, and successfully mitigated risks associated with seasonal fluctuations in demand,” he says.

Why Risk Management Became His Guiding Principle

When asked what he wishes he’d known at the start of his career, Sajal answerswith confidence:

“The importance of risk management in every aspect of business, and working as an employee as well.”

He elaborates that the importance of risk analysis lies in its ability to anticipate uncertainties and vulnerabilities, allowing businesses to proactively address issues before they escalate. By doing this, they not only protect their assets and enhance operational resilience but also foster a culture of risk awareness across the organization.

He also believes that,

“risk analysis plays a key role in optimizing financial performance by helping businesses avoid costly mistakes, reduce losses, and enhance their reputation and credibility among stakeholders.”

By systematically evaluating potential threats – whether financial, operational, strategic, or compliance-related – risk analysis enables companies to make informed decisions, allocate resources more effectively, and develop robust contingency plans.

This ability to analyze uncertainty – financial, operational, strategic, or compliance-related – is now central to Sajal’s professional toolkit, and he credits his favourite FITTskills modules with giving him deeper insight into this topic.

Risk Analysis and Cost Analysis – FITTskills training applied on the job

His favourite topics were risk analysis and management and cost and pricing analysis. After studying these areas, he was able to do a mind map of his previous company Sharp Express Inc. where he uncovered risk factors that eventually led to a downturn in the business during a high-interest rate market.

“These courses significantly deepened my knowledge, allowing me to apply advanced analytical skills directly to my work in logistics. This enhanced my ability to make data-driven decisions, mitigate risks, and optimize costs, ultimately contributing to the growth of the company and adding value to the broader community.”

An enriching learning experience

Despite balancing a demanding career in logistics and pursuing a Master’s in Finance, Sajal was able to complete two FITTskills courses for an enriching learning experience. Not long after, he decided to complete the entire FITTskills program and apply for his Certified International Trade Professional (CITP^®|FIBP^®) designation, understanding its ability to open international doors and add credibility to his CV.

“The CITP is a prestigious certification by FITT. By achieving this qualification doors are opened not only in Canada by across the EU as well. Moreover, the faculty of FITT and its strategic partner EDC are industry leaders and well-qualified.”

Pride in contributing to a wider community

Sajal considers earning his designation a proud moment. He views the CITP as a marker of prestige but, more importantly, as a way for him to contribute his learning and work experience to the evolving Canadian economy and “beautiful Canadian community.”

How the CITP is shaping his future

Since earning the CITP, Sajal has honed his international trade skills for a rounded view of logistics, finance, and risk mitigation, all assets he applies to his current role of operations team lead at A.P. Moller – Maersk. Whether he’s ensuring flawless coordination between shippers, carriers, and internal teams to meet OTP targets or reconciling load-level financials, including accessorial, fuel surcharges, and margin analysis to support financial operations, he is using his expertise and deep industry knowledge every day.

His efforts have even led to award recognition within the company—an achievement that motivates him to keep pushing boundaries and deliver excellence in the industry.

Though he is still early in his career, Sajal has accomplished a lot already. He’s won major contracts for clients, accomplished seamless logistics coordination for the world’s biggest shipping companies, and he’s attained major academic and professional milestones. Through it all, he has learned that success in international trade is not just about moving goods efficiently—it’s about understanding people, managing uncertainty, and thinking globally.

His journey stands as a powerful reminder that trade is built on relationships and strategic expertise, and strongest careers grow from both skillsets.
