Their stories reveal the impact of FITTskills training and international business education, not just in shaping professional skills, but in opening doors to opportunities that connect people, cultures, and economies worldwide.

Student of the Year: Chika Sato, Canadian College

The Student of the Year Award, presented in partnership with Export Development Canada, goes to the student with the highest overall GPA after completing all FITTskills courses at a delivery partner institution. This year’s recipient, Chika Sato of Canadian College, stood out not just for her academic excellence, but for her consistent drive to participate, learn, and contribute to class discussions.

Her professor, Kumar Varma, CITP, recalls Chika’s approach vividly:

“The success of Chika Sato lies in her outstanding focus on the subject when she is in class, her mental aptitude to understand international trade events, and her eagerness to participate in discussion. Punctuality with her assignments, her commitment to attendance, and her curiosity to ask questions made her a truly exceptional student. A rare pearl in the ocean!”

For Chika, the award is a validation of years of hard work. Her journey through the FITTskills program not only strengthened her understanding of global markets but also provided the tools to approach complex international challenges with confidence. Her recognition as Student of the Year shines a spotlight on the transformative impact of dedication and persistence.

International Sales & Marketing Plan Award: Rajveer Kaur, triOS College

The International Sales & Marketing Plan Award recognizes the strongest submission of a comprehensive sales and marketing plan. Rajveer Kaur of triOS College received this honour for her detailed and innovative plan outlining Old Navy’s entry into the Indian market.

Her project balanced the company’s global identity with India’s diverse cultural and consumer landscape. She identified key challenges, such as intense local competition and the need for cultural adaptation, and addressed them through product localization, festival-inspired collections, influencer collaborations, and a phased market entry strategy.

Reflecting on the experience, Rajveer shared:

“I felt very accomplished because I was able to combine strategic thinking with practical marketing tools. It showed me how theory translates into a real-world global business scenario, which was motivating and rewarding.”

Rajveer’s career goals extend beyond this project. With aspirations to become an international trade consultant and strategist and eventually build her own global business. She sees this award as both a milestone and a motivator.

Her professor, Dr. Kamaljit Kaur, Program Coordinator of the Global Business Management program at triOS College, praised her achievements:

“As a student, Rajveer consistently demonstrated critical thinking, creativity, and strong team-building skills. Her positive attitude, leading class discussions and timely submissions, made her an exceptional student. It is wonderful to see these strengths celebrated through this achievement.”

International Business Plan Award (Tie):

Teniola Animat Oke & Calvin Immanuel Suseendiran, Algonquin College

This year’s International Business Plan Award ended in a tie, with two equally impressive projects emerging from Algonquin College. Both demonstrated the ability to combine deep market research with strategic, real-world application.

Teniola Animat Oke developed a market entry strategy for Hanwha Vision’s DIY home alarm system in France. Navigating challenges around GDPR compliance, financial projections, and cultural preferences, she created a hybrid entry strategy combining online sales with partnerships through French retailers and telecom providers.

“Completing this project was incredibly rewarding,” Teniola said. “It pushed me to integrate everything I learned – market analysis, financial planning, risk management, and cultural adaptation – into an actionable plan. It reinforced my passion for international business and my confidence in tackling complex, multifaceted challenges.”

Her long-term vision? To work as a Global Strategy Consultant or International Market Expansion Manager, helping technology firms navigate new global frontiers.

Meanwhile, Calvin Immanuel Suseendiran built a comprehensive business plan for Privacy Shield, a Swiss privacy-enhancing technology firm, to enter the Italian market. By applying tactics he learned through the FITTskills program and his own cybersecurity expertise, he developed a strategy that aligned advanced technology with regulatory and cultural realities in Italy.

“Completing the project was deeply rewarding. It allowed me to apply both international trade frameworks and cybersecurity principles to a practical, forward-looking business strategy,” Calvin reflected.

His dream career lies at the intersection of cybersecurity and international trade, leading secure market entry strategies and driving digital transformation across borders.

Clarecia Christie, CITP, FITT Coordinator at Algonquin College, celebrated both students:

“Teniola and Calvin displayed a disciplined approach with a global mindset and intense curiosity. Teniola excelled in in-depth research, while Calvin showcased risk management skills. Their dedication to FITTskills courses was evident, and we are proud of their well-deserved success.”

FITT Achievement Award (Tie): Oruba AL Refa’i & April Channer, St. Clair College

The FITT Achievement Award is unique among the honours. It recognizes not just academic performance, but also leadership, community involvement, and perseverance. This year’s award was shared by two outstanding students from St. Clair College: Oruba AL Refa’i and April Channer.

Oruba AL Refa’i pursued International Business Management – Logistics Systems, inspired by the role logistics plays as the backbone of international trade. With a background in project management and supply chain, she excelled academically while balancing her role as a mother of three.

“Honestly, I feel thrilled and grateful to be this year’s recipient,” Oruba shared.

“Graduating with a 4.0 GPA as a full-time student and parent was already a major accomplishment, but this award validates my dedication and motivates me to keep striving for excellence in international trade and logistics.”

Her professor, Paul Jacobs, CITP, highlighted her impact:

“Oruba distinguished herself as an exceptional student through her academic excellence, leadership, and meaningful volunteer contributions. It is a privilege to celebrate her success.”

April Channer brought an entrepreneurial perspective shaped by her experience running a distribution company in Jamaica. She was drawn to international trade by its ability to connect people, products, and opportunities across borders.

“Being the recipient of the FITT Achievement Award is an incredible honour,” April said. “It validates my hard work as a student and as a young business owner, and motivates me to keep pushing boundaries and pursuing opportunities in global trade.”

Her instructor, Tammy Bombardier, CITP, praised April’s contribution:

“April brought incredible entrepreneurial insight to our program and generously shared her experiences with classmates. Her enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to contribute will undoubtedly make her a great asset to our international trade community.”

Both students represent the spirit of the FITT Achievement Award, balancing academic success with leadership, resilience, and a vision for the future of global business.

Standing out from the crowd: Digital badging credentials for professionals

By now, most people are familiar with the disconnect in employment: Professionals often lament how hard it is to find a job, while businesses claim they have plenty of openings but lack qualified candidates. Many experts say this disconnect comes from the so-called “skills gap”.

Up to 80% of employers say young professionals lack the skills and experience they need to succeed in the workplace.

This skills gap can be especially pronounced in fields such as international business and trade. Professionals in the field know that there are many areas of specialization, and college courses often offer a broader understanding of the field as a whole.

More targeted digital badges can also help trade professionals better communicate the scope of their education and skills with potential employers.

Taking the time to earn and share digital badges can pay off for professionals at any stage of their career.

One recent survey of 400,000 people worldwide found that 76 percent of professionals who earned a new certification saw a salary increase or promotion.

FITT has seen this play out with its own CITP certification: According to a FITT CITP salary survey, CITP®|FIBP®s in Canada on average earn CAD $52,000 more than the median salary.

Building the right team: The benefits of digital badging credentials for businesses

From hiring to retaining staff, digital badges also provides a major benefit to businesses. Businesses are increasingly moving to skills-based hiring. Rather than looking for educational or experience-based pre-requisites that a broad range of candidates might meet, companies are searching for a specific set of skills that will meet the company’s operational need or growth goals.

Digital badges allow hiring managers to quickly see how a candidate fits the company’s needs and to see what special skills the employee brings that  fill knowledge or skill gaps within the company.

Digital badges can also add an objectivity to the hiring process by allowing hiring managers to easily compare candidates’ education and experience.

“Employers must hire qualified personnel in any discipline to ensure that they get the most value from their employees. Hiring certified employees allows companies to get their employees working in what’s important faster,” said Emiliano Introcaso, CITP, Knowledge Product Manager for Export Development Canada and supply chain management professor at Sheridan and Seneca colleges.

In addition to signaling key skills to employers, digital badges also communicate something important about the type of employee the candidate will be. Professional certifications generally indicate that a candidate is willing to learn and grow their skills. That growth mindset can pay off for companies as they continue to grow and adapt to new markets and new market developments.

Connecting employees to skills-building opportunities allow companies to develop their existing talent to meet their future needs. Not only does that benefit the company, but it allows employees to grow with the company.

This can help with retention because employees can continue to advance their careers, and educational opportunities are often seen as a major benefit to motivated employees.

Once those employees have developed additional skills, they add value to the company and reduce costs by building those skill sets in-house, removing the need to bring in additional employees or find outside expertise.

“Bottom line – in-house experts’ salaries are less costly than third-party consultants. Then, in-house experts train internal employees to at least level up,” said Audrey Ross, CITP, Import & Export Compliance Manager at Orchard Custom Beauty.

“The more people thinking globally, the better growth you will have.”

Statistics demonstrate the value of investing in upskilling employees for business. Companies that invest $1,500 or more annually per employee for professional development report an average of 24%higher profit margins than companies who don’t make the investment.

In 2023, 263 new FITT Certificate holders emerged, showcasing the program’s continued relevance and impact. Notable organizations such as Global Affairs Canada, MUJI, Invest Alberta Corporation, Sumol+Compal Marcas SA, Block 4 Oilfield, LLC, North Atlantic, Export Québec, La Molienda and World Intec Co are now home to professionals equipped with FITT Certificates. 

Geographically, the FITT Certificate holders are making their mark in Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe. The job roles, including Trade Commissioner, International Trade Advisor, CEO, and Export Consultant, reflect the diverse career paths of those who started the training to get the FITT Certificate.

The number of FITT Diploma holders not only eclipses the previous year’s count but also emphasizes the increasing importance placed on trusted international trade credentials. This year’s FITT Diploma earners span diverse sectors, including agriculture, food, manufacturing, finance, logistics, and technology.

The extensive list of companies these diploma holders are now associated with includes enterprises like RBC Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank Group, Epiroc, SGS Canada Inc., Haya Solutions Inc., Coca-Cola Bottling, and Tjx Canada. From government agencies to private enterprises, the FITT 2023 Diploma holders are weaving a rich tapestry across the international trade spectrum.

Anniversary occasions are always a great opportunity to reflect on the past while looking toward the future. On Thursday, March 9th, FITT and our esteemed group of CITPs and CITP milestone anniversary celebrants did just that.  

During our 2023 CITP Milestone Anniversary Event, we celebrated CITPs marking their 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25-year anniversaries. The online fête included inspiring speeches by FITT President, CEO, and CITP Caroline Tompkins; The Honourable Perrin Beatty, PC, OC, Honourary CITP and President and CEO of The Canadian Chamber of Commerce; and Denise Amyot, Chair of FITT’s Board of Directors.  

The event also officially kicked-off festivities for the CITP designation’s 25th anniversary—a momentous achievement for FITT and all CITPs who have been part of the Certified International Trade Professional designation’s journey over the past quarter century.

Caroline Tompkins noted that those wishing to partake in the festivities are encouraged to use and check out the #CITPis25 hashtag to see all the online excitement happening to commemorate the occasion from now until June—the designation’s official anniversary month. 

CITPs reflect on their anniversaries

There were many event highlights to note, chief among them were touching quotes from notable milestone recipients. Caroline Tompkins shared these stories with the crowd, including the following sentiments from one of FITT’s first-ever CITPs, Bob Greaves—who celebrated his 25th anniversary this year. She noted that Bob said he’s “…been proud to represent himself as a CITP—it is the one designation he’s maintained over the years because of its relevancy and value.”  

Similarly, she shared a quote from Emiliano Introcaso—a CITP celebrating his 10-year anniversary—who said:

“…becoming a CITP makes it possible for me to practice and promote international trade in a way that is professional and ethical. The designation is a logical extension for people who truly want to crown their education and experience in global business and thrive in international markets.”

‘Now’s the time for vision’

In other speeches, the Honourable Perrin Beatty brought foresight and gravitas to the occasion, discussing the challenges and opportunities facing businesses working in a global market. He didn’t shy away from noting the realities of our current trade ecosystem impacted by COVID-19, geo-political conflicts, supply chain snarls, trade barriers and climate change—all of which have exposed “significant vulnerabilities in the global economy.”  

But, more than the challenges, Mr. Beatty highlighted the importance of trained trade professionals within this ecosystem. He encouraged CITPs to lead businesses trying to navigate these complexities, so they can see and take advantage of opportunities that are arising even during these disruptive times.

Canada, specifically, is rich with resources and commodities that the world wants, and it needs businesses led by knowledgeable trade professionals who can help open up these promising new trade markets.

“Now’s the time for vision,” he concluded, inspiring many in attendance to think about their role in the future of the world’s trade systems. 

Milestone recipients shine in the spotlight

In one of the most anticipated moments of the event, milestone celebrants were honoured with a rousing speech by Denise Amyot, Chair, FITT Board of Directors. She recognized the whopping 114 milestone recipients, all listed below: 

Capped off by a lively breakout networking session and a fun quiz, it’s safe to say that this year’s event was a success, garnering meaningful discussions and tributes for our milestone CITPs and the international trade community as a whole.

A huge congratulations to all those who celebrated their anniversaries, and a big thank you to all those who attended.

2022 may be best summed up by the word “hybrid”. As the world largely moved on from lockdowns and social distancing, many workplaces moved on to hybrid models allowing their employees the flexibility to pivot with these changing times.

There were mass layoffs, and yet the hiring landscape remained competitive. Many of us, both personally and professionally, saw a “return to normal” while also navigating a continually challenging economic and business environment.

Similarly, FITT saw the continued value in offering flexibility, with an uptick in learners taking the FITTskills program through our educational partners in an in-class, instructor-led setting – while still seeing a large portion of learners progressing through the program through the self-led online option.

No matter how they earned their knowledge and experience in international business, an impressive number of individuals from a wide range of sectors, job roles, and organizations put in the work to achieve their professional goals by enhancing their skills and earning FITT credentials in 2022.

During the 2022 calendar year:

• 19,055 FITTskills courses and workshops were issued to learners
• 2,239 FITT digital badges were shared online
• 247 people achieved their FITT Certificate in International Trade, bringing the all-time total of FITT Certificate Holders to 7,362
• 359 people achieved their FITT Diploma in International Trade, bringing the all-time total of FITT Diploma Holders to 5,725
• 235 individuals achieved the CITP designation, bringing the all-time total of individuals who have been certified by FITT to 1,842

When FITTskills participants, graduates and CITP|FIBPs share their stories of why they took FITTskills training or took steps to earn FITT credentials, we get consistent feedback that reinforces the value of them to individuals at all stages of their careers – from students to CEOs.

For some, attending the in-class training led to valuable networking connections, mentorships and  business opportunities.

Many said the CITP designation gave them the confidence and credibility to go after their dream job, or land a new contract with a big client.

Others were looking to equip their teams with the specific skills and knowledge needed to successfully achieve their organization’s international business goals.

CITP earners represent diverse roles connected by common goals

In 2022 235 individuals were awarded the designation that stands as the symbol of both competency and credibility for global business professionals, bringing the all-time total of individual earners to 1,842.

This cohort of earners represents 200+ different organizations from small, medium, and large-sized companies in the private sector, government departments, regional export offices, and financial institutions – including:

The breadth of sectors, business size, and job roles represented by CITPs are connected by the common thread of doing business beyond borders and proves the value of the designation for businesses trading internationally.

Every year we love to see the variety in roles that the latest cohort of CITPs inhabits. The group of earners from 2022 includes policy analysts, researchers, business development & sales managers, investment officers, loan service managers, customs brokers, procurement specialists, international business consultants, trade commissioners, marketing directors, border services officers and many others – from entry level to C-suite executives.

All of these professionals in sectors ranging from policy analysis to marketing and procurement see the importance of proving they have a thorough grasp of international trade processes, a commitment to global trade, and a dedication to ethical business practices and ongoing professional development.

More than a third of FITT Diploma earners went on to achieve the CITP

In 2022 an impressive 359 individuals earned the FITT Diploma in International Trade – a credential presented to individuals who have successfully completed the FITTskills program, through FITTskills online, through one of our educational partners, or through our portfolio submission process.

Earning the FITT Diploma meets the educational requirement for the CITP|FIBP designation for those applying through Pathway 1 (FITT Diploma Pathway).

We are thrilled to see 35% of 2022 diploma holders went on to earn the CITP designation. FITT Diploma earners have demonstrated their knowledge in each key category that, working together, complete international trade transactions.

This full picture of international trade prepares individuals to work effectively with colleagues and clients across the full spectrum of trade activities and sectors.

In 2022 there are more than 50 companies and 100 different job roles represented by FITT Diploma earners, from finance to customs, and large corporations (Home Depot, J.D. Irving Limited, BGRS, ATB Financial, Héroux-Devtek, and more), SMEs (Crank Software, Glenview Pharma, Fisher King Seafoods, Kelford Inc.) Government departments and regional trade offices (World Trade Centres, Toronto Region Board of Trade, STEP, Natural Resources Canada, Ontario Government, Caribbean Export Development Agency, and more) financial institutions, and many others.

FITT Certificate earners are continual learners

For those looking to begin or fill gaps in their international trade knowledge, earning the FITT Certificate in International Trade is a fantastic place to start. This credential is presented to individuals who’ve successfully completed any 3 FITTskills courses, or the equivalency thereof. Earning this certificate proves your knowledge in some of the key skills areas of global business.

In 2022 we proudly presented 247 individuals with this credential, from more than 60 different companies or organizations, and representing 80+ unique job roles. While earning the FITT Certificate is an accomplishment in itself, many didn’t stop there, with 46% of them going on to earn the FITT Diploma and 21% achieving the CITP designation in the same year.

The drive to grow and excel in their careers and businesses spurred 2022’s FITT credentials earners to gain valuable knowledge, skills and prestigious industry-recognized achievements.

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to all of the credential earners and celebrate their commitment to their international trade careers and professional development.

Chair of Certification Council

As the Chair of the soon-to-be disbanded Certification and Accreditation Committee, Laura Dorling, CITP, is ensuring a smooth transition by remaining in her position as Chair of the Council.

Laura Dorling, CITP – Advisor for the Office of the Executive Director for Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean at the World Bank Group

“It’s a great honour to be appointed to the inaugural Certification Council with such an esteemed group of Council Members and to have the opportunity to support FITT as the global standard for international trade training and certification.”

In her role as Senior Advisor in the Office of the Executive Director for Canada, Ireland, and the Caribbean, she maintains Board-level responsibilities and helps shape and approve investments in developing countries financed by the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation, and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency.

Laura also manages private sector engagement to promote procurement and investment opportunities in developing countries and leads on efforts to prioritize private capital mobilization across the World Bank Group to maximize financing for development.

Previously, Laura worked on operational teams at the World Bank across multiple geographic regions and represented Canada as a Senior Counsellor on the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Development Bank. Earlier in her career, she was a Team Leader and Trade Commissioner with the International Financing Division of Global Affairs Canada and an Export Consultant with the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

Laura is proud to be a Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) with a Master’s in E-Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in International Management and Marketing.

Simon Gittens, CITP – Trade Commissioner, Ontario Regional Office, Global Affairs Canada

Simon Gittens is also a continual thread between the former Committee and is continuing his contribution as a member of the new Certification Council.

“I am honoured to be accepted on the Certification Council.”

Simon started with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (now Global Affairs Canada) in 1994 and since then has had ten different assignments within Canada’s National Capital Region. He has also participated in multiple international trade missions. Simon is currently a Trade Commissioner, Ontario Regional Office.

Simon is a graduate of the Toronto School of Business and completed the certificate of achievement through the Harvard School of Business Leadership Management Program. He was one of the first Canadian Trade Commissioners to achieve the CITP designation and has continued to maintain his designation for almost 20 years.

Lesley Hillier, CITP – Chief Global Strategy Officer of Thermtest Inc., and CEO of Archipelago Holdings (Ventures) Ltd.

Lesley Hillier is welcomed as the requisite representation from the FITT Board of Directors on the Council.

“I am happy to be part of the wonderful process of those serving and entering the profession of global trade.”

Lesley is the Chief Global Strategy Officer for Thermtest Inc. As a Certified International Trade Professional, she oversees the company’s global strategy and implementation of the international expansion into the U.S., Latin America, Europe, and Asia. She is integral in external relationships with financial institutions, legal counsel, government, and IP risk governance.

She is a CPA, MBA, CITP, and a graduate of the iGP Innovation Governance Program, Stanford University, The Emerging CFO: Strategic Financial Leadership Program, and the Rothman School of Management, FinTech program.

Dov Bercovici, CITP – President & CEO at Discovery Centre and Discover Centre International

Dov Bercovici has an impressive 30-year track record of success as a leader in four outstanding organizations: World Trade Centre, Acadia University, The Discovery Centre, and Discovery Centre International.

“I am thrilled to join the FITT Certification Council and help empower future generations of international business professionals for years to come!”

Dov is highly experienced in advancing STEM education internationally, establishing innovation centres, delivering on major community capital projects, fundraising campaigns and international trade development.

He is a four-time TOP 50 CEO in Atlantic Canada and an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Association of Science Centres. Dov is also one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 Alumni and an economics and MBA graduate of McGill and Dalhousie universities. He is attracted to projects that empower young people with science savvy and make informal lifelong learning accessible for all global citizens.

Samantha Khoury, CITP – Investor Services Advisor for Québec at Invest in Canada

Samantha Khoury is the Investor Services Advisor for Québec at Invest in Canada since December 2020.

“I am delighted to be joining the Certification Council. It will be a pleasure to collaborate with the other Council members to participate in overseeing the certification program and, in turn, help ensure that the CITP|FIBP certification program is up to the highest accreditation standard.”

With over 10 years of experience in project management and consulting on three different continents and experience in both private and public sectors, Samantha is passionate about international business and partnerships, and has acquired a well-rounded vision of what is needed to be successful in global markets.

She has developed an expertise in innovation ecosystems as she is currently completing her Master of Administration in International Business at HEC Montréal and she holds a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in International Business from Concordia University.

Kristian Kot, CITP – Global Trade Compliance Executive

A seasoned Trade Professional with 20+ years of experience in international trade, Kristian possesses expert knowledge of U.S. and Canadian trade regulations and export controls as well as theoretical and practical global trade expertise.

“I am excited to join this newly formed Council to provide my global perspectives and experience in international trade on behalf of FITT.”

Kristian started his career as a customs broker in Canada which led to a progression of executive roles, including a decade of working and living throughout the U.S. leading trade programs at organizations such as Dell and FaceBook-Meta.

Having spent time on both the client and service provider side uniquely positions Kristian as a well-rounded global trade subject matter expert. He currently resides in Victoria, BC, and is Six Sigma and CITP®|FIBP® certified.

Rob Howard is an International Lawyer, Entrepreneur, and Director. Rob is also actively engaged with various colleges and universities where he speaks as a guest lecturer on various topics of international business and U.S. law.

Ali Lajevardi, CITP – Senior Managing Advisor, Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC)

Ali is experienced across a wide spectrum of industries including management consulting, international trade, engineering, advanced medical technologies, manufacturing, high-grade materials processing, logistics and supply chain management. He has been advising businesses at BDC for over seven years.

James Collard, CITP – Director of Planning & Economic Development Director, Iron Horse Industrial Park

James conceived, designed, and is currently developing the Iron Horse Industrial Park, a Foreign Trade Zone on Native American Trust Land. He has extensive experience working with privately held businesses, federal, tribal, state, local officials, and marginalized communities over a wide range of issues, including water resource development and sustainability, infrastructure installation, economic development, urban design, and law enforcement.

Lesley Hillier, CITP – Chief Global Strategy Officer, Thermtest

Lesley is the Chief Global Strategy Officer at Thermtest, where she leads the company’s future international growth through the development and execution of global corporate strategies, while maintaining a constant business model for innovation. She also serves as the CEO of Archipelago Ventures, where she works with external entrepreneurs and start-up companies on pre-commercial development of new and innovative ideas, ultimately leading to the creation of IP with commercial potential. Lesley took over a board position vacated in 2021.

Denise Amyot, CITP –  President & CEO , Colleges and Institutes Canada

For more than nine years, Denise has served as the President/CEO of Colleges and Institutes Canada (formerly ACCC). She was previously President and CEO of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation including three national museums: Agriculture and Food, Aviation and Space and Science and Technology. She has worked both in National Headquarters and in regions in several federal departments including Human Resources Development Canada, National Defense, Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Heritage and the Public Service Commission. Denise was re-elected to the FITT Board and has moved into the Chair position.

In celebration of its 30^th anniversary, the Forum for International Trade Training  (FITT) is giving $30,000 worth of global business training to the Canadian business community.

OTTAWA, ON. June 23, 2022 –The Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) is thrilled to be celebrating its 30^th anniversary this year. However, this milestone comes at a time when businesses are still reeling from a global pandemic and finding a “new normal”. With the “great resignation” and a labour market also in flux, there is a critical need for upskilling as employees switch jobs and employers struggle to fill them. To help during these times, FITT is contributing a total of $30,000 in international business training for employees of companies that are seeking to expand their global footprint in 2022.

Since 1992, FITT has provided the world’s only international business training and designation recognized by the Government of Canada. Nearly 37,000 people worldwide have benefited from their international trade knowledge products and services.

“Celebrating FITT’s 30th anniversary is an exceptional milestone in many ways,” notes FITT President and CEO Caroline Tompkins, CITP (Certified International Trade Professional). “It highlights the long and fruitful history FITT has had within the international trade ecosystem, not only setting the standard for international trade training but also international trade as a profession with the CITP designation.”

With the government’s COVID-19 relief funding ending for businesses, FITT recognized a need to make training more accessible to entrepreneurs and employees alike as they navigate the current economy. As part of the $30,000 contribution for 2022, FITT is providing 30 free FITTskills online courses throughout the month of June to help businesses acquire the knowledge needed to grow faster and better prepare for risks in the future. The FITTskills online training program is comprised of six internationally recognized course topics that range from the Feasibility of International Trade to International Market Entry Strategies to International Trade Finance.

Of this momentous anniversary and contribution, many of FITT’s partners have commented on its unrivalled importance to the business community and international trade ecosystem, including Startup Canada CEO, Kayla Isabelle, who notes:

“FITT has been a valued, trusted, and essential partner of our Startup Global program helping entrepreneurs grow international businesses. With the help of FITT, thousands of entrepreneurs have broadened their businesses, scaled for impact, and have felt empowered every step of their exporting journey. We’re delighted to continue to grow our partnership to support Canada’s emerging business leaders and put Canada on the global stage.”

Likewise, Sara Wilshaw, Hon. CITP, Chief Trade Commissioner and Assistant Deputy Minister at Global Affairs Canada had much to say about the FITT’s contribution to Canadian business and trade:

“The Trade Commissioner Service and the Forum for International Trade Training share an important goal of supporting Canadian businesses as they enter new markets. That’s why we’ve collaborated over the years to train and certify our trade commissioners through FITT’s programs, equipping them to better support businesses to succeed abroad.”

Mairead Lavery, Hon. CITP, CEO, Export Development Canada (EDC), also highlighted the importance of FITT’s CITP designation, stating: “By earning the CITP designation, you’ve signalled your dedication to delivering the very best advice, support, and service to businesses that complete in the remarkable arena that is global trade.” She adds, “It’s a great honour to be included among this growing, yet still exclusive community of dedicated and highly trained professionals, including the 47 CITPs within EDC and counting.”

In the last 30 years, FITT has established itself as a global leader in training, certification and accreditation across businesses, governments, post-secondary institutions, and other organizations that support the profession. Through FITT, Canada was the first country in the world to create a professional designation for trade practitioners. To this day, the CITP designation is the global standard for international businesspeople and trade professionals who seek to validate their expertise in the comprehensive arena of trade and business. This global designation is earned by meeting a rigorous set of competency standards, based on extensive industry consultation, and set by FITT.

With this $30,000 investment in 2022, FITT is committed to helping businesses bounce back from the pandemic and contribute to the growth of global economies.
