Some careers are carefully planned. Others unfold through unexpected turns, revealing exactly where someone is meant to be. For Godwin Aigbokhan, CITP, international trade began with a happenstance job opportunity with a friend.

“I entered the field of international trade by accident. I used to work in the development sector, specializing in private sector development. One day, a vacancy arose in an organization I was affiliated with, and a friend of mine resigned to join the development organization I was working for at the time. So, essentially, we switched roles,” he states.

That chance transition opened the door to what would become a deeply impactful trade career that now sees him facilitating bilateral trade between Canadian and Nigerian companies with the Trade Commissioner Service, a position he’s been in for over 3 years.

Showcasing adaptability in business during COVID-19

One of Godwin’s most memorable career moments occurred during a period of global crisis: COVID-19. With borders closed and companies unsure of their next move, Godwin helped design a fully virtual model for engagement.

“During the pandemic, I organized both a virtual delegation trip and a virtual trade show. It was a fascinating experience as there was no template to guide my team.”

Over 1,000 participants from five countries joined the online trade show, an extraordinary number for a first-time digital event. Even more remarkable, several companies that learned about Nigeria for the first time through the show have since executed several projects in the country.

In a moment defined by uncertainty, Godwin created a new pathway for partnership and proved his sharp skill for innovation and adaptability within the world of trade.

Finding hidden opportunities for good

Throughout his career, Godwin has discovered a unique strength: the ability to identify connections and commercial possibilities that aren’t obvious at first glance.

“I believe I have a talent for identifying obscure opportunities across different industries.”

For him, the most rewarding moments come when companies validate those introductions—turning “hidden” opportunities into tangible impact.

An example of this talent at work came with the development of a digital circular-economy marketplace. The project “allowed for the categorization and trading of household waste on an individual basis and diverted waste from landfills,” he states. His work relied on innovative trade models and showed how these can directly support sustainability and community development.

Advice for trade professionals: Be adaptable—it will serve you well

International trade is rarely linear and Godwin learned early that rigid plans do not survive long in fast-moving environments.

“

If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be to be adaptable, because the best-laid plans mean nothing if you can’t implement them. I learned this during the pandemic.”

Able to pivot and thrive during these circumstances himself, his advice proves useful in the current trade ecosystem.

Affirming his experience through FITTskills training

Godwin’s experience with the FITTskills program helped clarify and validate all the hands-on work he’s undertaken throughout his career.

“Taking the FITTskills courses was a truly affirmative experience for me, as I was able to fit almost every activity I have undertaken in my career into the frameworks and models I learnt about during the courses. This made me feel as though none of my previous work was random. I am very grateful for this experience.”

His favourite course—International Market Entry Strategies—felt especially familiar. “I have actually, in one way or another, implemented all of the strategies in my career,” he says, adding that he loved being able to connect each strategy to a specific activity and company in his work history.

The power of competence with a CITP

Godwin was inspired to get his Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation because he wanted to project a high level of trade aptitude. “As an international trade professional, I want to project a certain level of competence,” he says, adding that “Earning the CITP designation would enhance my profile and help me to achieve this.”

Not an easy feat to achieve, he feels “very proud” to have gained the designation and he sees it opening new doors for him within his organization. He also hopes that with it, he can play a role in helping his home country flourish with trade.

“Currently, Africa represents only 3% of global trade, and Nigeria, my home country, has one of the lowest trade-to-GDP figures in the world at just 2%. I believe that by creating platforms for businesses to connect and discover hidden trade opportunities, it will be possible to create jobs, increase incomes, and improve living standards across the continent.”

A future focused on global growth

With a blend of development experience, trade insight, and a gift for uncovering unseen opportunities, Godwin is charting a path that bridges public policy, private enterprise, and international collaboration.

His work proves that trade is far more than transactions. It is a mechanism for reshaping economies, elevating communities, and widening doors for countries poised for growth.

Earned her elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: July, 2025

For Samatha Richards, CITP her journey in international trade began with intention, determination, and a clear passion for global business. Her path started in the classroom at Nova Scotia Community College, where she completed an advanced associate degree in 2019—training that would form the foundation for her career in global logistics and trade.

“My career in international trade began with an academic journey at the Nova Scotia Community College,” she explains. “Following my studies, I was successful in securing a position with a company specializing in international trade in 2021 and have continued to work in the field since.”

From her first days in the industry, Samatha found herself drawn to the complexity of imports and exports—particularly the problem-solving mindset needed to navigate documentation, regulations, and risk.

“I’ve found that solving client issues and managing documentation, risk assessment, and management for imports and exports has been incredibly formative. These experiences have built a level of resilience and an ability to work under pressure that I couldn’t have gained in any other way.”

Thinking critically, solving problems, and shaping client success

Early in her career, Samatha learned how even small decisions in global logistics can create significant impacts for clients. “I recall meticulously analyzing global shipping routes and advising a key international client on a new, more efficient mode of transport,” she says. Her recommendation led to a significant reduction in transit time for her client’s goods, which directly impacted their market entry timeline and strengthened their relationship.

This combination of analytical thinking, operational insight, and client-focused service has become a defining feature of her approach.

She is particularly proud of how quickly she’s been able to take on responsibility and deliver meaningful impact. Within only a few years, she’s handled multiple clients and developed an “ability to help identify new lanes and opportunities that have been instrumental to my company’s growth and profitability.”

Learning to balance theory with thinking on your feet

International trade is a field often mistaken for being rule-based and predictable, but Samatha learned quickly that the reality is far more dynamic.

“When I began, I thought success was about memorizing every tariff code, trade agreement, and customs form,” she explains. “While that knowledge is essential, I quickly learned that the reality of international trade is far messier.”

She clarifies that every shipment is unique, and unexpected issues are inevitable, whether they’re port delays, documentation errors, or external circumstances.

Instead, she now sees adaptability, communication, and strong relationships as the critical components to success: “Being able to communicate clearly and calmly with clients, customs brokers, and freight forwarders to navigate a crisis is often more impactful than having every rule memorized.”

“Your clients will value your ability to solve their problems more than your encyclopedic knowledge of trade law.”

She credits skills like thinking on your feet, digging for answers, and being able to build strong relationships with everyone in the supply chain as real keys to success.

Her insight is one shared by experienced trade professionals around the world: clients remember the people who solve problems, not the ones who simply recite regulations.

Why she pursued the CITP designation

Samatha’s decision to become a CITP was driven by her commitment to professional excellence and a desire to let clients and employers know she’s met the highest professional standards in trade

“For a professional, this designation acts as a powerful signal to clients and employers, demonstrating that you have met a rigorous set of industry-validated standards.”

“It adds an immediate layer of trust and credibility, which is essential for building a successful career in a field where navigating complex risks and regulations is the core function.”

She also admires how it is a globally recognized credential, one that signifies a high level of expertise and commitment to ethical conduct. But earning it was more than just about what it signalled to others—it was also a significant milestone that validated her expertise and hard work.

“Achieving this credential felt like the culmination of my academic and professional journey in international trade,” she says, adding that the rigorous process required to earn the designation, from meeting the experience requirements to passing the comprehensive exam, made the achievement feel earned and meaningful. “It confirmed that my skills were not just valuable to my clients and employers but also met a global standard of excellence.”

A strong foundation for a global future

Looking ahead, Samatha sees the CITP as a defining asset in her career development.
“I foresee the CITP designation being a cornerstone of my future career in several key ways, serving as a platform for growth, specialization, and leadership.”

With a sharp analytical mind, dedication to client success, and advanced global trade credentials, Samatha is well-positioned to pursue leadership roles, expand into specialized areas of trade, or guide companies entering new markets.

Her story is a powerful example of how early ambition, continuous learning, and professional accreditation can combine to create meaningful career momentum.

For Evan Buie, CITP, the path into international trade began with a genuine interest in global business and early career experiences that opened doors into the world of cross-border commerce.

“I had always been drawn to international business and took many courses covering the subject for my undergraduate degree,” he says. After graduating, he entered a role as Coordinator of International Relations in Hokkaido, Japan, giving him a first taste of what a career that spanned across continents and cultures would be like.

As it turns out, “taste” would become a thematic word in his career journey, beginning with his next two roles upon returning to Canada, ones that would see him serving two multi-national food and beverage giants.

Those opportunities became the launchpad into his first formal trade role. “This experience helped me secure my first position in international trade, focusing on East Asia and Oceania, with the Government of Alberta’s Export Development Team within the Ministry of Agriculture,” he notes.

Bringing Alberta exporters to the world and the world to Alberta

During his time with the Government of Alberta, Evan had the opportunity to host several delegations from overseas. One of his most memorable experiences came early on:

“One of my first delegations involved a Chinese chef and his social media team in Calgary. We went to cattle ranches and multiple local, hidden gem restaurants. Seeing their excitement when they tasted the local delicacies or seeing the Rocky Mountains for the first time was hugely enjoyable.”

He also recalls the energy of taking Alberta companies abroad: “I also had a chance to lead an Alberta delegation of companies to Japan for a three-city tabletop expo.”

“Seeing the companies in their element, talking with prospective buyers, and making deals is why I do the work I do. Karaoke was a blast too!”

These moments, equal parts cultural exchange and trade development, reinforced his desire to help Canadian businesses grow internationally, while fostering meaningful relationships with exporters overseas.

A major milestone: becoming a Trade Commissioner

“One of my proudest professional accomplishments was being hired by Global Affairs Canada as a Trade Commissioner,” Evan says, describing the achievement as a highlight of his career. In this role, he has taken on leadership of one of Western Canada’s emerging agri-food showcases:

“I’ve had the pleasure of co-leading the Taste of Western Canada, a food and beverage tabletop showcase held during the iconic Calgary Stampede.”

A huge undertaking, the third iteration of the show will bring together 80 Western Canada agri-food and beverage companies and over 75 domestic and international buyers, making it one of the most targeted food and beverage events in all of Western Canada. “Its potential for further growth is enormous,” Evan states.

Discovering that business results don’t happen overnight

Over the years, Evan has developed a deeper appreciation for the persistence and patience required in global commerce. He notes that professionals in trade must have a deep level of dedication to make international transactions and partnerships come together. Reading about it may make it seem simple in theory, but “…it is another to live it.” he states.

“The time commitments that companies put into their international business development efforts can take years before they are rewarded. Overnight successes are not the norm.”

How FITTskills training strengthened his confidence

When Evan enrolled in FITTskills courses, he discovered how helpful comprehensive and structured learning could be. He enjoyed how the program pushed him to focus on the course content for an extended period of time, when otherwise, many topics may have only come up in passing or infrequently on the job. The fact that the topics were broken into digestible chapters made the process easier too.

In fact, the format became a practical tool he continues to rely on.

“I have since gone back to the textbooks for specific content when following up with clients. The courses have also made me feel more confident in my interactions with companies as I am better positioned to advise them on the FITTskills course topics.”

With his FITTskills training complete, Evan feels like a more well-rounded international trade professional, one that can confidently approach clients and international business with advice and solutions.

This confidence would become apparent after taking his favourite course, International Trade Finance: “I found it quite challenging as the content is material that I would have historically referred companies to other service providers for advice on (i.e. EDC), but I learned a lot and can speak more confidently to the content now,” he notes.

Pursuing the reputation of the CITP designation

Evan chose to apply for the Certified International Trade Professional CITP®|FIBP® designation to “highlight my educational achievement, knowledge obtained, and to add a reputable designation to my resume, LinkedIn page, and signature line,” he says. It’s a credential he views as both reputable and meaningful, something worth showcasing across his professional profile.

Earning it was also another proud milestone to add to his career highlights. Understanding how valuable the designation can be going forward, he feels it adds another layer of credibility to his work:

“I’ve been told that if I were to apply to a job in the future, and all things being equal otherwise, the candidate with the CITP designation would get the job.”

A bright future building Canada’s trade relationships with other countries

As he continues to support Canadian businesses entering international markets, Evan’s CITP designation will help reinforce the guidance he provides, grounded not only in experience, but in globally recognized best practices. It will also, if his trend in food and agriculture continues, be filled with flavourful adventures.

Before joining Export Development Canada (EDC), Marc-André worked in the banking sector and frequently collaborated with EDC teams.

A career built through perseverance and reinvention

When asked about his favourite career story, Marc-André doesn’t point to a single transaction, project, or deal. Instead, he points to the journey itself: “My career so far is my favorite story,” he reflects.

That journey began far from the world of finance. “When I finished high school, I earned a vocational diploma in machining. I worked for about two years in that industry before realizing that I wanted more.” That realization led him back to school to complete his B.A.A. (Bachelor of Business Administration), marking the beginning of a complete career pivot.

“Having no financial background or experience in the banking business, I started from the bottom and worked my way up to becoming a Senior Account Manager in the business sector and now, a Senior Relationship Manager at EDC.”

It’s a path built on determination—one that mirrors the resilience required for international business itself.

Supporting Canadian exporters through strategic insight

As a Senior Relationship Manager at EDC, Marc-André now works closely with companies seeking to grow beyond Canadian borders. His progression into this role has been shaped by each step of his earlier experience—from frontline banking to complex client portfolio management.

That path has equipped him with a deep appreciation for what exporters face every day. His work now involves supporting businesses as they navigate risk, access financing, and pursue international opportunities—something he finds both challenging and rewarding.

A crucial lesson: confidence matters

One insight Marc-André wishes he had gained earlier is the importance of trusting yourself in a constantly shifting industry.

“Don’t doubt yourself. International trade is complex and always different. That’s what makes our job so interesting and captivating.”

It’s advice that many international trade professionals learn only after years in the field, and it speaks to why continuous learning is so highly valued throughout his career.

How FITTskills enhanced his work with exporters

Marc-André credits FITTskills training with strengthening his ability to support clients more effectively.

His favourite course? “International market entry strategies.
Why the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation mattered

Encouraged by other certified professionals, Marc-André saw the CITP designation as the natural next step in deepening his expertise. “Thanks to other graduates holding the certification, I was looking for a way to deepen my knowledge of the international market, and the CITP seemed to be the best option.”

Earning the certification became a meaningful personal milestone—especially given the challenges he faced balancing career and family.

“I feel proud, because I worked full-time, had a one-year-old baby when I started, and still managed to take and succeed in all the requirements and courses to get the CITP designation.”

A credential that strengthens long-term career growth

Marc-André views the CITP as a powerful enabler for future opportunities. “I foresee my CITP designation playing a significant role in my future career by enhancing my credibility and expertise in international trade. This certification not only validates my knowledge but also equips me with the skills to navigate complex global markets effectively.”

He also recognizes the value of joining a global network:

“Being part of the CITP community allows me to stay updated with industry trends and best practices, ensuring that I remain at the forefront of the international trade sector.”

With grit, resilience, and determination shaping his success so far, Marc-André’s trajectory is clearly moving in one direction—upward—with no signs of slowing down.

Earned his elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: November, 2024

Some professionals find their way into international trade by chance. For Ismail Benmezdad, CITP, it was a deliberate choice. From early in his career, he was drawn to the scale and complexity of global commerce; how goods move across continents, navigate regulatory frameworks, and ultimately reach the markets and communities that rely on them.

“I was drawn to international trade because of its complexity and global scope,” he explains.

“I wanted a career that combined strategic planning, analytical problem-solving, and the opportunity to connect markets across borders.”

That combination of strategy, execution, and global integration has defined his professional journey.

Rising through the ranks: where operations meet ingenuity

As Director of Operations at KLN Logistics Inc., Ismail leads large-scale logistics and warehouse operations, aligning service performance with financial and strategic objectives. His career progression reflects a consistent ability to safeguard revenue, manage risk, and deliver operational transformation.

One pivotal experience involved a high-value shipment placed under unexpected customs hold, threatening a major client commitment.

“The hold would have disrupted delivery timelines and placed a strategic account at risk,” he recalls.

“By engaging customs authorities directly and aligning cross-functional teams under accelerated timelines, we mitigated the risk and preserved the client relationship.”

Beyond immediate problem resolution, such situations underscore the importance of structured risk management and proactive stakeholder engagement.

In another initiative, he led a comprehensive warehouse optimization program that reduced operating costs by more than 20% while improving service reliability.

“The real achievement was not only cost reduction,” he notes, “but creating a performance-driven culture that connected operational efficiency with customer outcomes.”

The initiative integrated process redesign, performance metrics, and targeted technology enhancements, laying groundwork for sustainable operational scalability.

Engineering stronger supply chains

In his leadership roles, including Director of Operations and former Terminal Manager, Ismail has overseen complex freight and warehouse networks, implementing initiatives that enhance service levels while controlling cost structures.

“One of the most impactful projects involved optimizing freight operations to simultaneously reduce transit times and operating expenses,” he explains. “The outcome strengthened both customer satisfaction and overall operational performance.”

These improvements were driven by disciplined route analysis, vendor negotiations, workforce alignment, and a willingness to challenge legacy processes.

His experience reinforces a fundamental principle: operational excellence is not accidental, it is systematically designed.

The lesson he wishes he learned sooner

Reflecting on his career, Ismail identifies adaptability as the most critical leadership insight.

“The most valuable lesson I learned is that adaptability must be embedded into operational strategy,” he says.

“Global trade is influenced by regulatory shifts, geopolitical volatility, and market fluctuations.”

“Organizations that succeed are those that institutionalize agility—through scenario planning, diversified partnerships, and continuous improvement.”

For him, adaptability is not reactive. It is a strategic design principle that strengthens enterprise resilience.

FITTskills training: turning experience into strategy

Ismail’s natural leadership was strengthened through formal training. Completing the FITTskills program allowed him to reinforce years of hands-on experience with structured methodology and global best practices.

“FITTskills provided me with in-depth knowledge of international trade,” he says. “These courses have strengthened my ability to evaluate cross-border risk, regulatory exposure, and market-entry feasibility with greater strategic clarity.”

One course stood out in particular: Feasibility of International Trade.
“It gave me the most value,” he notes. “It helped me, and I use what I learned now in my daily work.”

With this training, he now approaches decisions with a sharper analytical lens, balancing operational realities with long-term strategic considerations.

Why he pursued the CITP designation

For Ismail, applying for the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation was the natural next step.

“I chose to apply for the CITP designation because it’s a globally recognized certification that reflects expertise and commitment in international trade,” he says.

“Earning the CITP designation was a proud and rewarding milestone for me. It validated my expertise in international trade and logistics.”

Recognition matters in an industry built on trust. And for Ismail, the designation amplifies both confidence and credibility.

Looking ahead: using the CITP to unlock future opportunities

Ismail views the CITP designation as an enabler for expanded executive responsibility.

“It positions me to contribute at a more strategic level—supporting enterprise-wide supply chain optimization, cross-border growth initiatives, and long-term operational resilience.”

As global supply chains face increasing complexity, digitization, and geopolitical pressure, he remains focused on building systems that balance efficiency, risk management, and sustainable growth.

Earned his elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: March, 2025

For Joshua Egba, CITP, international trade represents meaningful opportunities to develop business, shape growing nations, and foster inclusivity through partnerships. From the earliest days of his career, his work has been guided by a deep belief that economic growth is a powerful driver of development, with trade being one of the most impactful levers to unlock that growth, especially in emerging markets.

“Ultimately, I chose a career in international trade because I wanted to help shape systems that create opportunity, especially in regions that have long been underserved. International trade became my conduit for doing just that.”

Today, as the Senior West Africa Representative for the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, Joshua stands at the heart of some of the most significant United States-Africa commercial initiatives of the past decade. His work bridges public and private sectors, connects policymakers with innovators, and turns promising ideas into development-driven trade projects with measurable impact.

Where development, policy, and trade intersect

Joshua’s international journey began shortly after earning his economics degree and later a master’s in international business. He was drawn to the intersection of economic empowerment and global markets—especially how trade could “create jobs, shift mindsets, and support long-term transformation.” He was also energized by the potential of public-private partnerships and the idea that smarter policy design, backed by international cooperation, could make doing business easier and more inclusive.

His early career placed him directly at that crossroads. Working on U.S. trade and development policy for Africa, he quickly saw how reforms, capacity building, and public-private cooperation could reshape entire market environments.

One of his most memorable career moments came in 2016. During this time, he was privileged to join the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and senior U.S. business executives who comprised the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa (PAC-DBIA) on a trade mission to Nigeria. Chaired by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, the Council was formed to advise the U.S. President on ways to strengthen commercial engagement between the U.S. and Africa.

This trip provided an opportunity for the PAC-DBIA members to gather facts about the commercial opportunities and challenges in Nigeria and Rwanda, report back to the U.S. President with strong and actionable recommendations, and develop policy ideas that would benefit both countries and raise the commercial relationship to the next level.

Joshua’s work was instrumental to the initiative’s success. “I helped lay the groundwork for the formation of Nigeria’s Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC)—a powerful example of how trade facilitation and investment climate reform could be localized and led by national champions.”

“This experience reinforced for me the real-world impact that well-structured trade initiatives can have.”

Driving innovation through U.S.–Africa partnerships

More recently, Joshua was part of a 2022 transportation-technology initiative at the Port of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire—a project that he is proud of.

“In 2022, I worked on an activity where a U.S. entity that develops intelligent transportation systems to improve freight transportation piloted their technology at the Port of Abidjan,” he says. The project explored how smart systems could alleviate congestion, streamline cargo flows, and support the country’s growing logistics sector.

The effort was built on earlier U.S.–Africa knowledge-exchange programs and showed how reverse trade missions and pilot studies can directly shape local infrastructure plans. In the end, his work paid off: “The project would ultimately assist Cote d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Transport in developing a truck parking and logistics center using technologies from a U.S. company.”

Partnerships as a cornerstone to trade reform

There are many insights Joshua has picked up over his 15-year career, but one stands out above the rest:

“I have learned that in emerging and frontier markets, especially those facing major infrastructure gaps, partnerships are the foundation of meaningful trade reform.”

He saw this truth in action in 2024, when he met the CEO and board of a multilateral financial institution alongside his agency’s department head. Together, they shared deal pipelines and collaborated on a green and sustainable infrastructure workshop and, by doing this, their two agencies were able to catalyze interest and investment in projects that enhance trade.

Gaining a globally recognized credential while broadening his network

Alongside his vast knowledge and 15 years of experience in trade, Joshua decided to pursue his Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation for two reasons:

“The CITP designation demonstrates to stakeholders that I have been certified by a globally recognized institution. I am also interested in networking with CITP designation holders to broaden my contact database and facilitate stronger trade connections.”

When he earned the designation, he was eager to share the news. “I was delighted,” he says, adding, “I immediately announced to my family, friends and colleagues, and to my contacts on LinkedIn.”

“This is my first professional qualification, and one that I will treasure. The CITP certifies me for such important skills as ethics and professionalism required to practice at the highest level.”

Opening new doors in global leadership

Looking ahead, Joshua sees the CITP playing a critical role in his long-term aspirations. Hoping to serve on boards of international entities, he feels “the CITP ratifies my capacity to fulfil high-level international trade responsibilities across the world.”

As he continues shaping U.S.–Africa trade frameworks, building infrastructure partnerships, and strengthening West Africa’s trade environment, Joshua stands poised to expand his influence even further.

His combination of experience, credibility, and globally recognized certification is already paving the way for great change and opportunities across nations and continents.

Earned his elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: February 2025

For Ted Lomond, CITP, international trade isn’t an isolated field—it is the progression of a career devoted to business and economic development. His path through high-profile government positions, global market strategy, and the renewable energy sector underscores this path, one that has seen him build powerful relationships that shape regional and international growth.

His early work as Deputy Minister responsible for International Trade and Tourism for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador showed him how trade can strengthen industries and communities alike.

“I worked directly with industry to promote economic development through trade,” he says. It’s a foundation that prepared him for his current role as President and CEO of North Atlantic, an Atlantic-based energy company now moving confidently into international renewable markets.

Expanding industries and horizons

Throughout his career, Ted has had a front-row seat to the growth of companies aiming to expand internationally. His favourite stories often come from watching small, rural businesses flourish either in new markets or locally.

“It was always rewarding to see companies—particularly those from small rural communities—be successful in international markets.”

For example, “One small aviation training company I worked with went on to become a major employer in the region,” he recalls.

Leading the future of clean energy exports

Today, Ted’s ambitious work centers around leading North Atlantic through the global energy transition. His mandate is far from small.

“Right now, I’m leading a regional energy company through energy transition using cost discipline and aggressive diversification into low-carbon product lines such as hydrogen and its derivatives, renewable diesel, and energy efficiency,” he explains.

North Atlantic’s growth strategy includes developing global markets for renewable energy, backed by major infrastructure plans. These include a 320 MW wind farm, a hydrogen generation plant capable of producing 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, and a hydrogenation plant that converts hydrogen into a Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) for export.

At the same time, North Atlantic has been pursing international expansion and recently completed the purchased the second largest refinery in France at Gravenchon. Operating as North Atlantic Energies, they are now a major player in the downstream oil sector in France and are assessing the potential for green hydrogen produced in Newfoundland and Labrador to replace a portion of the grey hydrogen used at the facility.

Projects of this scale require deep international trade knowledge—from regulatory alignment to logistics, financing, and market analysis. It’s one of the reasons Ted’s background and experience in trade is so valuable in the fast-moving renewable sector.

Prepare well, follow up consistently, and exercise patience

Throughout his career, Ted has seen countless companies pursue international markets, and he’s learned that success rarely comes quickly or easily.

“Determination and patience are required. You need to commit the necessary time and resources to develop new markets.”

He has also often witnessed companies approach trade missions or foreign meetings without doing the groundwork required. “I have been involved in numerous trade missions and too often have seen firms not preparing in advance. Without understanding your potential customer, you are not able to articulate what problem you can solve or the value you can bring.”

Equally critical, he adds, is making the effort to circle back with contacts—even if it’s simply to say thanks.

“I have seen firms not properly follow up with leads. Many times, companies return from international business meetings and fail to reconnect in a timely fashion or even thank potential customers for the meeting. Sometimes the organizers of trade activities contribute to this by focusing on the number of attendees vs. the readiness of participants.”

Applying FITTskills knowledge to his leadership role in the energy sector

When Ted began steering North Atlantic toward international renewable energy markets, the FITTskills program helped expand his perspective.

“I thought the courses were comprehensive and useful given my current role leading a company focused on the successful export of renewable green hydrogen from Newfoundland and Labrador to Europe.”

Because the hydrogen sector is so new, “pricing, offtake durations, transportation routes, and means of conveyance are still in flux,” the courses add value during the formative stages of working in this emerging sector.

He found International Trade Finance particularly useful, in this regard, citing it as his favourite course. “Some of the material was new to me and has been useful as we look at the types of financing that will be necessary for developing new, less carbon-intensive industries.”

Gaining a “common language” with the CITP

In developing markets for clean hydrogen, Ted regularly collaborates with international partners, governments, and export development agencies. Many individuals within these groups hold the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation, and that peer recognition played a role in his decision.

“I see the advantage of having the CITP designation as a means of establishing a common language and approach to the work,” he says.

In addition to creating useful dialogue between contacts, the CITP designation was also indicative of his constant learning mindset: “I am definitely a lifelong learner and enjoy learning new things. I feel the CITP designation is a significant credential and I have a sense of accomplishment having achieved it,” he says.

Looking ahead, he sees the credential as both a professional signal and a strategic tool.

“I think the CITP designation will serve as a sort of shorthand in quickly conveying information about my education and experience. I’m looking forward to engaging the network of other CITP credited individuals working in international trade.”

A leader shaping Canada’s renewable trade future

Earned his elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: February, 2025

For Philippe Ferland, CITP, the path into international trade was organic, unfolding naturally as his curiosity and analytical strengths aligned with a growing opportunity.

After completing his master’s degree, he was approached by the manager of the Business Intelligence team at Invest in Canada, who encouraged him to apply for her newly forming team. He did, and it changed the course of his career.

“I began in a research-focused role where I developed reports related to foreign direct investments and international trade and transitioned to a client-focused role later in my career,” Philippe explains. The shift not only expanded his responsibilities, but deepened his understanding of global investment flows and the human connections behind them.

From research to real-world trade interactions

One of Philippe’s most memorable experiences came when he hosted his first site visit—a week-long tour across Quebec and Ontario with the CEO of an Austrian company. Coordinating the agenda required meticulous planning involving extensive collaboration between two provincial partners.

“It wasn’t until the Saturday before the visit that I completed the agenda and sent it to the company,” he recalls. The CEO jokingly admired how “hard-working public servants must be in Canada for doing work on a Saturday.”

The week that followed was a success on every front. Philippe served not only as a guide to Canadian opportunities but as a cultural bridge between Canada and Austria. When the visit ended, the company identified several ideal factory locations and expressed continued interest in investing. The CEO even gifted Philippe Austrian chocolates and wine, small tokens of gratitude for a job exceptionally well done.

Seeing world leaders in action

Another favourite moment in Phillipe’s career came during the 2023 CERAWeek in Texas, one of the world’s premier energy events, founded by Cambridge Energy Research Associates. There, Philippe unexpectedly found himself sharing the convention floor with a notable guest:

“We saw John Kerry just casually walk by the Canadian booth every morning… it was always a surprise to us—seeing him in person.”

He adds that he was impressed that the Former US secretary of state did not have an extensive security detail and seemed entirely at ease.

Shaping the energy sector with a cornerstone report

While Philippe’s client-facing work keeps him engaged daily, one of his proudest professional achievements comes from his earlier research days as a Business Intelligence Analyst: “I wrote a comprehensive report on the battery supply chain that broke down opportunities to attract investment across every stage of it,” he explains. It was a major undertaking—months of interviews with industry experts and analysis condensed into a single strategic document.

The result? The report received significant praise internally and became a cornerstone of Invest in Canada’s national strategy for the sector. It also gave Philippe a deep expertise in an industry critical to Canada’s future competitiveness, expertise he continues to apply in his work today.

“Getting to write such a useful piece of research to the organization was really rewarding. The knowledge I gained writing it has supported all the work I’ve done in the sector ever since.”

Patience and experience lead to “second-nature” instincts

Reflecting on what he wishes he knew earlier in his career, Philippe emphasizes patience and persistence, stating:

“It takes time to fully develop into a role in this space. International trade is a complex subject with many nuances, and you won’t have all the answers immediately. However, over time, you’ll be exposed to enough scenarios that your ability to handle most situations will become second nature.”

It’s advice that mirrors his own growth—from researcher, to advisor, to a trusted liaison between foreign investors and Canadian opportunity.

How the FITTskills program expanded his global perspective

Philippe’s decision to pursue the FITTskills program helped broaden his horizons beyond niche focuses. He liked how the courses were straightforward and accessible while also offering important information to anyone looking to work in international trade. He also found particular value in the rounded view of trade that the program gave him:

“These courses helped broaden my horizons and see the bigger picture when interacting with my own clients.”

He also felt that his favourite course, International Market Entry Strategies, stood out for its cultural insights. “The component on cultural considerations was really interesting… and pushed me to be more conscious of these matters in my own day-to-day work interacting with clients from different European countries,” he says.

Wanting the CITP from the get-go

For Philippe, applying for the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation was a natural extension of his learning.

“It was the goal I was aiming for by taking the courses. Being designated as a Certified International Trade Professional shows I have the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in this field,” he explains.

“Like being a certified accountant, the designation builds trust from your clients.”

He also felt a deep sense of satisfaction in achieving something new in his career progression.

A path to an established community and new opportunities

Looking ahead, he sees the CITP as an asset for future opportunities—particularly in roles within the foreign service, where the credential is known and respected.

“Seeing that the CITP designation is quite common for those working on the trade side in the foreign service,” he says, adding, “it can open doors for me there should I decide to apply in the future.”

Already a meaningful contributor to Canada’s trade ecosystem, Philippe is well-positioned to deepen his impact in the years ahead. His strong research foundation, analytical approach, and steady dedication set the stage for many more achievements to come.

Transitioning from healthcare to global commerce isn’t a typical career path, but for Ana Rosetephane Quilas, CITP, it was a leap that transformed her professional journey.

“I originally trained as a professional nurse and gained valuable experience working abroad, which exposed me to different cultures, industries, and ways of thinking,” Ana recalls. “However, I wanted to challenge myself beyond the healthcare sector and pursue a career that would allow me to think strategically, solve complex problems, and engage in cross-border opportunities.”

That decision led Ana to pursue an MBA from the University of Cumbria in the UK, a move that opened the door to a new world of trade and global business development.

From healthcare to high-tech: building a global career

Ana’s transition into international business was as bold as it was successful. After earning her MBA, she joined Edify, a tech company specializing in immersive experiences for education and training. Over time, she developed expertise in market entry strategies, feasibility studies, and risk management, helping the company expand its global footprint.

When Edify merged with Soluis Group, a leader in immersive technology for real estate and construction, Ana’s role evolved again. She helped integrate both companies’ processes, aligning commercial operations and strategic goals across multiple international markets.

“Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of global market expansion and the complexities of scaling a business internationally.”

Expanding business horizons in the Middle East

Ana Rosetephane Quilas, MBA, CITP, delivering presentations and product demos at international events across the Middle East and Southeast Asia

“One of the most rewarding experiences in my career has been supporting the expansion of our business in the Middle East, particularly in the UAE and Saudi Arabia,” Ana shares. Her work involved conducting in-depth market research, understanding local regulations, and engaging with key stakeholders.

Representing the company abroad became one of the highlights of her career. “I’ve had the opportunity to engage in client-facing meetings, deliver presentations, and conduct product demos in countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Malaysia,” she says.

These interactions not only strengthened her company’s market presence but also reinforced Ana’s passion for bridging global business opportunities through strategic partnerships and immersive technology solutions.

She also played a crucial role in supporting Edify’s $5 million Series A funding, assisting with due diligence and investor negotiations—all aspects of work that reinforced her passion for global business and trade.

Pivotal career moments that led to leadership roles

When Ana earned her MBA, it marked a pivotal shift in her career. It gave her the strategic mindset needed to navigate complex global business environments and take on leadership roles at Soluis and Edify.

With her business acumen, she’s been able to support C-Suite executives with adaptability, analytical thinking, and a deep understanding of international business dynamics. Her role has been instrumental in executing strategic initiatives, managing cross-border operations, and ensuring the smooth implementation of key business decisions in global markets.

Market entry strategy: a project that delivered results

“One of my standout projects was developing market entry strategies for clients looking to expand internationally,” she explains. “Whether it was helping a Hong Kong-based frozen sushi company enter the U.S. market or supporting an immersive tech company’s expansion in the Middle East, I enjoyed crafting approaches that addressed regulatory, financial, and operational challenges while ensuring business sustainability.”

One of the most valuable lessons that Ana has learned over the years is the importance of adaptability.

“International trade is constantly evolving due to shifting regulations, geopolitical events, and market trends.”

“Early in my career, I believed that having a solid strategy was enough, but I quickly realized that the ability to pivot, adjust, and think on my feet is just as crucial.”

That mindset continues to guide her work today, in her new role in corporate governance and executing business strategy and key decisions made by top executives across multiple entities of Soluis Group.

FITTskills courses: bridging knowledge and real-world practice

Ana emphasizes how the FITTskills program provided the structure and theoretical foundation she needed to complement her hands-on experience.

“The FITTskills courses provided me with a structured, in-depth understanding of international trade. They complemented my hands-on experience by giving me the frameworks and methodologies needed to approach trade challenges more strategically.”

Courses like international market entry, and trade finance, for example, helped her craft data-driven strategies for her clients. They also reinforced her ability to assess financial viability, mitigate risks, and structure deals more effectively—skills that have been invaluable in her career.

Putting knowledge into practice with the International Market Entry Strategies course

Ana’s favourite course comes as no surprise: “The International Market Entry Strategies course stood out to me because of its real-world applicability,” she says. “It provided a comprehensive understanding of different entry modes, risk assessments, and strategic considerations when expanding into new markets.”

Pursuing formal validation with the CITP designation

Ana’s decision to earn her Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation stemmed from her desire to formally validate her global trade expertise. “I pursued the CITP designation because I wanted to formally recognize my expertise in international trade and strengthen my credibility in the field.”

She adds,

“The designation is globally respected and signals a high level of competency, which is crucial when working with clients, investors, and international business leaders.”

Having transitioned from healthcare into international business, the CITP designation helped her validate her skillset and solidify her career shift. With it, she can demonstrate her commitment to mastering global trade, positioning her as a trusted advisor in market entry and expansion strategies.

Looking ahead: leading with purpose and expertise

For Ana, earning her CITP wasn’t just a credential—it was a milestone. “Earning the CITP designation was a proud moment for me,” she says. “It represented years of learning, hands-on experience, and dedication to international trade.”

She views the designation as both an affirmation of her journey and a springboard for what’s next.

“The CITP designation will play a crucial role in advancing my career as I continue to expand my consultancy in market entry strategy services.”

In the long term, she wants to take on more leadership roles in global trade initiatives, possibly working with international institutions or advising businesses on large-scale expansion projects—and the CITP will help with this ambition.

A future shaped by global trade certification

As Ana continues to guide companies through international expansion, her story serves as a reminder of how courage, adaptability, and lifelong learning can redefine a career. From healthcare to high-tech, she’s proof that a global trade certification doesn’t just prove expertise, it empowers professionals to drive transformation across industries and borders.

From the young age of sixteen, living in his hometown in Venezuela with modest savings and bold aspirations, Ramón Pinto knew he wanted to pursue a life of international entrepreneurship. It began as an ambitious teenage venture importing clothing from the United States to sell at home and ignited a passion that would eventually lead him across borders, industries, and continents and to the field of international trade.

A journey shaped by curiosity, ethics, and global ambition

When Ramón later immigrated to Canada, he arrived with a clear sense of purpose: he wanted to build a career in global business the right way. He was drawn to the idea of importing and exporting, but wanted to do so with ethical standards and practices—especially those set by developing countries.

Understanding the often uneven landscape in global economies, he wanted to move products from counties with competitive advantages to developing nations.

By doing this, he could create access to products that weren’t easily made in developing countries, either because these countries had limited production capacity, or because certain products were far more expensive locally.

He could put in-demand items into the hands of common consumers in developing nations. Moreover, he could make a meaningful impact on global markets, a driving force that is still part of his business to this day.

After college, he threw himself into entrepreneurship right away. His first company was an advertising and marketing business, a venture that would introduce him to the paper industry, a field that he is still in today.

Today, his business is SOLUPAPER LLC, and under 14 years of careful guidance and leadership by Ramón it has grown into a trusted global partner with a strong international footprint.

$15 million growth built on relationships and integrity

Ramón speaks openly about the early challenges of building a company, the doubts, the risks, the feeling of being a newcomer in an industry dominated by giants.

“In the beginning, everything seems overwhelming,” he says. Competing with established players, earning supplier trust, and securing capital required persistence and clarity of purpose.

He started with $60,000 in working capital but his willingness to remain focused, trust the process, and learn from every challenge has skyrocketed the company’s growth. Currently, SOLUPAPER has earned over $15 million in sales for four consecutive years, a milestone Ramon credits to a belief in building authentic relationships, mutual trust, and honesty.

“As a newcomer, the challenge wasn’t just about offering quality products, it was about proving that we could be a reliable option. Earning the trust of suppliers was one of our toughest challenges.”

“We had to show that we were serious, that we’d be around for the long haul, and that our business relationships were about more than just transactions. They were partnerships for mutual growth.”

He also believes a commitment to transparency worked wonders. He made sure his business and teams delivered on promises, remained accessible, and were honest about what they could and couldn’t do at each stage.

Using a creative mindset to finance growth

Capital constraints also shaped his leadership. With tight resources in the business’s early years, Ramón took a sustainable approach:

“Instead of taking quick, expensive routes, we focused on sustainable expansion, reinvesting our profits and seeking financing only when absolutely necessary. It wasn’t easy, and many times it felt like we wouldn’t make it, but every financial hurdle taught us to be more resilient and manage our resources efficiently.”

“The key was always keeping the long-term vision in mind, knowing that each sacrifice today would bring us closer to success tomorrow.”

Knowing when and how to grow with cross-border trade: decisions based on data and trends

As the business grew, Ramon realized that his company could not afford to stand still. The industry and market were changing rapidly, so he knew his brand had to adapt to new technologies, consumer trends, and market demands to keep its competitive edge. “We had to innovate continuously, not just in our products but in the way we did business,” he recalls.

One of the most decisive moments in his career came with the decision to expand the company’s product line and explore new markets. Understanding that the company couldn’t stick to what they already knew, he and his teams had to take some calculated risks to keep growing:

“We made decisions based on data analysis and trends, and we weren’t afraid to invest in areas that seemed uncertain.”

‘Today, that vision has allowed us to maintain a solid sales trajectory and continue moving forward despite industry shifts.”

Valuable lessons from a storied career in global trade

With all his years of experience in international business, Ramón has learned many lessons along the way. These include the following:

Patience is key: Results don’t come overnight, but every step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals.

Trust is earned daily: Whether with clients, suppliers, or your team, your reputation is what really sets you apart.

Never stop learning: Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, adapt, and improve.

Teamwork is essential: You can’t do it alone. Surround yourself with people who share your vision and are committed at every stage of the journey.

Today, after over a decade of experience and steady growth, Ramón can proudly say that what started as a small dream with $60K has paid off in ways he and his valued team couldn’t have imagined.

“As we continue to grow, we remain committed to the same values that guided us in the beginning: trust, adaptability, and perseverance.”

To all the entrepreneurs starting out today, Ramón offers sound advice:

“Don’t give up. The obstacles will be many, but each one brings an important lesson. If you continue forward with passion and dedication, success will come.”

“Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. If you’re able to learn from obstacles and keep your eyes on your goals, the future is yours.”

He also has more practical guidance as well:

“Make sure you are as clear as possible about the terms of negotiation, and clarify Incoterms because not everyone knows them.”

Supplying global giants and seeing impact in real-time

One of Ramón’s proudest accomplishments is supplying transnational corporations, such as Smurfit, PepsiCo, and McDonald’s with SOLUPAPER products.

“It feels very good to drop by a supermarket and see products that are packed with material supplied by your company and team.”

Earning his CITP marked a major milestone in Ramón’s already successful career journey

Ramón pursued his CITP®|FIBP® designation to reinforce his credibility and commitment to the highest standards in international trade.

“Being part of such a well-recognized organization, coupled with the extensive experience I’ve gained, marks a major milestone in my career. This is a major achievement on my path as both a professional and a business owner.”

Moving forward, he sees the designation as a key asset that will add a competitive edge to his professional profile. “It will not only help me stand out but also empower me to continue expanding my career in a more global context.”

Starting out as a determined teenager just testing the waters of importing, Ramón has now grown into a seasoned leader of a multi-million-dollar paper company. He is living proof that a true passion for international trade can be turned into profitable success with hard work, integrity, and vision.
