In today’s competitive job market, both students and professionals are searching for ways to advance their career prospects. They want to stand out from other contenders but also want to stay relevant in a fast-moving career gauntlet where jobs are scarcer and hiring expectations higher.

In North America, hiring is down significantly from the pandemic peak. As of publishing, the U.S. hiring rate sits at about 3.5% (about 5.6 million hires) and in Canada, the national unemployment rate is 6.9%. That’s not quite recession-level lows, but a far more cautious job market than the 2021-2022 hiring peak.

Factor in the rise of AI, which is replacing some of these previously human-operated roles, and you have an ecosystem that requires candidates to not only possess great experience and skill but also something extra to make them stand above the rest.

Today’s jobseekers often pursue extra credentials—whether degrees, certifications, or workplace training—to gain an edge. But deciding which route to take isn’t easy. The landscape is crowded, and each option offers a distinct kind of value.

In the international trade field specifically, many people gravitate toward either an MBA or the CITP, begging two important questions:

What’s the difference between an MBA (Master of Business Administration) and the CITP®|FIBP® (Certified International Trade Professional) designation?

And which increases your chances of getting hired?

What’s the difference between an MBA (Master of Business Administration) and the CITP®|FIBP® (Certified International Trade Professional) designation?

And which increases your chances of getting hired?

The short answer is this: both credentials are valuable, but for very different reasons. Both can increase your chances of getting hired, but depending on the role you seek, you may experience far more competition with one versus the other.

The right choice depends on where you want your career to go, how specialized you want your skills to be, and how deeply you want to work within the world of international trade.

Sometimes, if you ask, the answer comes swiftly: Audrey’s story

Audrey Ross, CITP, for example, decided to go for the CITP based on the advice of her instructor. She was already in university when she landed a job role that dealt with the inner workings of international trade.

“I got this job and I was enjoying it. I got to work on everything from product development and global sourcing to procurement and buying and doing style specs and costing and all these fun things. Then, I decided about 5 or 6 years into my work that I wanted something external to have more market knowledge, because I was getting a lot of great knowledge internally, but I wanted that external professional information.”

She signed up for an Advanced International Trade Certificate at George Brown College in Toronto and started doing classes on evenings and weekends. She didn’t realize it at the time, but the courses she was taking were FITT accredited. She found them to be interesting and hands-on, giving her more insight into the practical applications of international trade on an international level. About 9-10 courses in, she decided to ask her instructor for advice:

“I said to him ‘What do you recommend my next step be career-wise? Should I really buckle down and do a degree or an MBA, what do you think? He turned to me and said, ‘You need to get your FITT Diploma and become a CITP.’ I was really anxious about not having a degree, and he was like ‘No. You don’t need that. You want this professional designation because it’s well recognized, you’re going to meet great people, it’s a great community and it’s international. It’s not just focused on what’s happening locally. It’s completely international.’”

This turned out to be the right decision for Audrey. She has now been working in the field of international trade at Orchard Beauty for over 20 years and has been a CITP for 7.

“The FITT program is so comprehensive. It really covers such a good breadth of what you’re going to experience in business. So, in a labour market where you’re challenged to hire, I’m struggling to hire qualified candidates myself, when you see what my fellow CITPs are doing, you’re looking at very successful growing enterprises, and it can really level up your company with expertise and knowledge.”

She adds “The way a lot of entrepreneurs and businesses get started, it’s about the customer and it’s about the sale. And that doesn’t really mean much until they actually get into how they’re going to fulfil the sale when it’s in another country and what’s involved in that. And that’s when people realize, ‘oh there are all these international regulations and standards.’ That’s international trade.” For Audrey, the CITP encompasses these intricacies of trade, where an MBA wouldn’t have.

Making an informed decision—that’s the most important part

If you’re early in your career—or watching your budget—the CITP can be a quicker, more direct route into trade roles, with strong ROI. However, an MBA has long-term benefits with leadership positions that require that specific degree.

In the world of international trade and importing and exporting specifically, both have strong value, but the CITP is designed to develop practical, globally focused business expertise.

While it includes specific operational competencies such as understanding compliance requirements and Incoterms®, the designation also builds skills in areas like international procurement and sourcing, service exports, market diversification, cross-cultural communication, supply chain risk management, and global market expansion.

An MBA provides broad business education, whereas the CITP offers specialized knowledge and professional credibility tailored to the realities of international trade and global business growth.

Unifying all of these tips is an important ethos: if you truly have the skills and experience to benefit an employer and their business, you need to prove this in detail.

Proving your worth isn’t solely limited to your 1–2-page CV either. Proof comes in what you say and do in real life. That means you also have to reach out and immerse yourself in international trade networks. Showcase your experience and problem-solving expertise at events, in blogs, or on LinkedIn.
1. Cater your summary and skillset to trade’s most topical issues

The global trade ecosystem has fundamentally shifted. The World Economic Forum (WEF) reports that 39 % of core skill sets are expected to transform or become obsolete by 2030.

This tip also applies to how you describe your key strengths. Instead of a long list of generic one-word skills, like “supply chain, logistics, and technology,” make sure you explain useful areas within these core topics. For example:

“Technology-enabled trade operations: e-commerce logistics, trade-data analytics, cross-border digital platforms”

When you tailor your job-search narrative this way, you reflect not only what companies want today but what they will prize tomorrow.

2. Showcase your measurable results

Today’s resumes need to lead with calculable results. That’s because numerical metrics prove that you can actually attain real-world success markers—like ROI and revenue—that businesses need to thrive. For example, instead of writing “experienced with customs clearance in the APAC market,” opt for quantifiable increases and percentages, followed by the skillset used to achieve the win. For example:

“Reduced customs clearance delays by 18 % across 12 export markets”

“Negotiated freight-rates yielding cost-savings of USD 350K annually while strengthening carrier network across Asia-Pacific”

3. Understand how Applicant Tracking Systems work, then highlight your keywords

Many large organizations and HR departments use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen for terms and skills that their recruits will need to focus on. So, if their company is hiring a trade compliance specialist, terms such as customs-broker liaison, Incoterms, HS classification, tariff-engineering, export-control, sanctions, trade-compliance analytics, regional trade agreements (RTA) expertise, origin-marking and digital trade platforms would be words to consider.

When it comes to how you apply these words to your resume, make sure you insert only what you actually have expertise in, and detail how you use this skill in real life to get numerical results.

So, for example, instead of saying “Experienced with customs compliance and regional trade in international markets,” choose something like:

“Implemented HS-classification and origin-determination processes across 14 markets, reducing customs delays by 27% and ensuring 100% compliance with regional trade-agreement requirements.”

4. Validate your learning mindset and expertise with credentials

Nothing showcases your true expertise quite like a recognized credential. Recruiters don’t have to question how much training you’ve had or whether your knowledge is up to speed. This work has already been done for them through the verification process of the certification body.

More than just letters on the end of your name on a CV, designations like the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation are industry-backed, meaning that professionals all around the world in public and private organizations recognize their ability to improve the skills of their employers.

Moreover, a CITP is governed by strict rules and bodies, meaning that their knowledge base is regularly being updated to suit the current-day markets, a relief to employers seeking hires versed in the problems of today.

In fact, many companies actively recruit for people with designations like the CITP. Browse through current-day job boards and you’ll find many well-known brands, organizations, and government bodies labelling these specific certifications as “an asset” to their currently open positions.

5. Use your network and align with trade-specific organizations

Earning a professional designation like the CITP can also broaden your trade network—connecting you with other professionals with the designation and their contacts. Use this benefit to your advantage.

Frequently, certification bodies have networking events, celebrations, and webinars where you can find or showcase expertise, and even one RSVP can open several job opportunities for you.

Organizations like FITT also have blogs and CITP-specific spotlights that highlight people in the industry, giving you access to individuals who might be hiring or their connections who are hiring. A few clicks and a short message could also be the key to getting that first interview.

Get more than your foot in the door—showcase the person, the potential, and the practical applications

For jobseekers navigating the international trade job market, the message is clear: you need more than a standard skillset résumé or CV. You need to present yourself as a player in a transformed ecosystem, fluent in technology, agile in regulatory shifts, and ready to bridge global markets. You need to showcase your passion for lifelong learning and improvement in your field, and you need to put proof to your abilities with real numbers and data.

You will stand out with effort, and that’s the first step to getting noticed.

We all know that undergoing professional development to gain new skills is something we should all be doing on a regular basis. According to HR Magazine and the Huffington post – companies that invest $1,500 or more per employee per year on training average 24 % higher profit margins than companies with lower yearly training investments. That’s huge!

When it comes to professional certification, a recent survey of 400,000 people across the globe found that 76% of people reported a salary increase or promotion after completing a professional certification. According to FITT’s own recent CITP salary survey, the median salary of CITP®|FIBP®s in Canada is CAD $52,000 more than the average median salary in the country.

Those are the statistics, but we wanted to talk to real business owners to find out how the FITTskills courses and earning the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation impacted their ventures and their personal careers. Here’s what 6 of them had to say.

Emmanuel Asafo Adjei, CITP – Owner of E.A.T. Tigernuts Co.

FITTskills coursework helped this business owner see opportunities to expand into new markets, and the know-how to succeed.

His CITP designation added the credibility he needs to attract clients all over the world.

In his work in international trade, Emmanuel has seen many successes. They include managing more than $100 million in inventory assets in one of southwestern Ontario’s largest warehouse facilities, facilitating and auditing shipping documents while ensuring that shipments met international standards, and building quality control and international trade databases that reduced audit time and paperwork by more than 80%.

In his latest venture, Emmanuel is working on farming the superfood tiger nuts in Africa for import into Canada. He’s packaging and distributing the superfood into niche food stores in Canada and the United States. Through his career and FITT studies, Emmanuel has also learned the importance of perseverance:

“Never give up on any goal you set for yourself. There may be challenges, but they all pass away and give way to your success eventually. One of my proudest moments was getting my FITT diploma.”

With his FITT coursework, Emmanuel earned a deeper understanding of the nuances of food imports, packaging, and distribution in Canada and the United States—knowledge that has proved extremely valuable as the owner of a food import business. FITTskills have helped him better understand importing goods, working with Canadian customs, the Canada Food Inspection Agency, Canada Revenue Authority, Port Authority, and import brokers.

Broadening perspectives on new markets Emmanuel’s FITTskills courses—such as the International Trade Finance course—gave him insight into working with global clients, suppliers, and customers, along with expanding his global literacy and inter-cultural awareness. They’ve also helped him see future opportunities in trade.

I chose the CITP designation to consolidate my skills sets in international business and to be an asset to companies that may want to expand into developing markets, especially in Africa.

“My motivation has broadened to include the many growth opportunities with Africa’s 1.3 billion-person market, now one of the largest free-trade areas in the world.
FITTskills International Trade Finance course equipped this business owner help his clients access capital and reach new markets by giving him a full understanding of international transactions, from risks to closing payments.

His CITP designation gives him automatic credibility and recognition with his overseas clients – helping him to secure new projects.

Randall Strategy is led by certified financial and trade professionals. The organization aims to de-risk business ventures so SMEs can raise capital and enter new markets. They help these companies get the capital and contracts they need so they can focus on running their business.

“Every time I get to meet and work with a new small business client, I learn about their operations and help them grow; it is a very rewarding experience. Most of these companies are family-owned and operated, and helping them understand that they too can compete globally is very rewarding.

My favourite FITTskills course was International Trade Finance because it helped me better understand how to mitigate currency risk, make payments and ultimately complete a transaction. In my mind, a mutually beneficial transaction is the core of trade and this course really brought home how to do that.

My business helps small businesses access capital and reach new markets. The CITP is a well-regarded international designation and CITPs are held to a standard of professionalism that I wanted applied to my practice. It helps secure my company’s reputation of professionalism.

I am proud to have my CITP designation. It validates my experience and signals to clients that I will represent their best interest. It also enhances my ability to participate in the global trade market, which is very exciting.”

FITTskills training gave Carolina the birds eye view of international trade as a whole, as well as the inner workings of trade transactions she needed to effectively guide her SME clients through doing business in global markets.

The CITP designation validated the high level of international business knowledge and experience Carolina embodies at home and abroad.

After several years of working on events in Toronto, promoting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the Pacific Region, Carolina decided to create a new platform and an international program to connect Canadian companies, organizations and SMEs looking for international business opportunities.

The Pacific Trade Show brings together a new platform for participants to connect through experience sharing and networking, learn from a wide range of speakers, and discover new market trends in products and/or services.

In 2011, Carolina attained her Certified International Trade Professional designation, the CITP|FIBP, a strategic move that would serve her in many ways in her career.

Carolina adds that,

“The program is so comprehensive, and courses like Feasibility of International Trade and Global Value Chain have been key tools in my career for a better understanding in all aspects of international trade.
