Summary of Duties:

Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) is a worldwide network of professionals in international business development (IBD), with preferred access to business knowledge and contacts, who are committed to advancing Canadian commercial and economic interests abroad. The TCS is helping companies sell their products and services outside Canada by connecting them with its funding and support programs, international opportunities and its network of trade commissioners in more than 160 cities worldwide. The TCS also advances Canada’s commercial interests by, for example, attracting foreign investment to Canada and facilitating R&D collaboration.

Working within the trade team of the Embassy of Canada to the Kingdom of Denmark, under the direction of the Counsellor (Commercial), the Trade Commissioner will be responsible for advancing Canada’s commercial interests in the Cleantech, Energy, and Infrastructure sectors in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, as well as identifying and promoting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) opportunities into Canada.

Although the sectors indicated above will be the primary focus of the officer, there will on occasion be requirements to assist with requests in reactive sectors, such as but not limited to consumer products or education. Collaboration with the other commercial officers on the team is also the norm, as sectors often overlap. The position will require close collaboration with the political section of the Embassy, including on trade policy.

Lastly, this position will work within the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) sectors in delivering support to R&D partnership development, including highlighting Canada as a destination of choice for R&D research and development.

Key responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  1. Lead, in partnership with and under the guidance from the Counsellor (Commercial), on the Cleantech, Energy (renewable, green, traditional) and Infrastructure sectors
  2. Other reactive or overlapping sectors
  3. Support the work of the commercial section within the Embassy, with guidance from the Counsellor (Commercial), in the areas of Science, Technology and Innovation
  4. Gathering business and competitor intelligence about the local market in relevant sectors
  5. Providing strategic advice and troubleshooting for Canadian companies
  6. Developing and maintaining relationships with local business contacts, Canadian clients and key stakeholders (including Provincial, Territorial, Municipal and Indigenous governments)
  7. Proactively engaging Danish companies, organizations, and government departments and agencies in trade promotion and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) attraction and aftercare initiatives
  8. Developing research and communication products to support management, senior officers and clients
  9. Participating in the trade team’s business planning cycle, project planning and management of international business development initiatives
  10. Supporting high-level visitors and other urgent priorities of the Embassy
  11. Ensure ongoing collaboration with the political section of the Embassy to promote a whole of Canada approach
