Now, of course, customers can simply go to a grocery store and buy boxes at a time without a second thought to the complex nature of how they came to be in their hands. Non-perishable goods are even easier to come by, requiring the click of a few buttons to get them across countries and seas right to your doorstep. Need a specialized service from someone working in a region hundreds of thousands of miles away? No problem; technology has that solution covered. 

As trade evolves, so do the job roles that support it

Put simply, the movement of goods and services across borders has evolved at a breathtaking pace. Alongside these transformations, the teams that make global commerce possible have grown in both size and sophistication. What was once the domain of a few specialists now involves entire departments dedicated to logistics, technology, supply chain, and trade compliance, the latter being a job area that has recently seen incredible growth. 

Compliance specialization is booming

“Companies with greater than 15% expected growth allocate an average of eight people to trade compliance activities, compared to six in companies anticipating little or no growth,” states a 2025 benchmark study by Descartes Systems Group.

This increase can be attributed to many factors, from geopolitical shifts and tariff policies to shipping disruptions and natural disasters.  

The World Economic Forum also highlights this shift in their paper, Trade Compliance for Leadership, stating, “Non-compliance with new trade requirements could affect hundreds of billions of dollars of trade flows. The stakes are high: compliance safeguards business continuity, avoids supply chain disruption and can be a competitive advantage. It also mitigates the risks of penalties and reputational damage.”  

Customs roles are also becoming a C-suite discussion

Other trade roles seeing expansion include those focused on customs.

“Customs will be used as a business strategy, becoming an important C-Suite level discussion point to navigate the ever-complex international trade waters,” notes a recent article by shipping giant Maersk. And it’s easy to see why.

With a growing web of tariffs, counter-tariffs, and shifting regulations worldwide, importers and exporters must manage their classification codes, documentation, and compliance procedures with precision—or else risk costly penalties and delays. 

And then, there is AI

Virtually all areas of business, including global trade, are being touched by artificial intelligence and associated technologies. In fact, “The global AI in logistics and supply-chain market size was valued at USD 20.1 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 25.9 % between 2025 and 2034,” states a report by Global Market Insights. And these technologies are focused on improving operational cost, streamlining logistics planning, and managing real-time supply chain efficiency—but only if teams are trained on how to operate these new technologies.  

Agility, accuracy, and technology: core focuses for trade teams

All in all, in 2026, trade teams need to lean their roles toward technology, compliance, and risk planning for resiliency.  

The World Economic Forum notes in their Future of Jobs Report that “The most prominent skills differentiating growing from declining jobs are anticipated to comprise resilience, flexibility, and agility; resource management and operations; quality control; programming, and technological literacy.” 

That sets the stage for roles like trade-compliance analyst, customs strategy lead, global trade-technology architect, and import/export risk manager—titles once rare, but now increasingly common.  

A simple browse of current job postings finds top companies like Amazon hiring for Global Trade Compliance PMs or Global Customs Ops Analysts, requiring candidates to have the skills to build scalable trade-compliance programs and broker networks. While grocery chains like Loblaws are looking for Customs and Trade Analysts, roles focused on import and export clearance and risk.  

Globally, there are thousands of jobs focused on customs and international trade compliance, including many on FITT’s job board—making it more important than ever for competitive teams to make these professions a priority for successful international market expansion.

Offshoring, nearshoring, and re-shoring: strategies to mitigate volatility 

With increasingly unpredictable supply chains, companies are also rethinking where and how they allocate their trade teams. Offshoring, nearshoring, and re-shoring have become hot-topic strategies in this conversation—each offering clear advantages and trade-offs. 

• Offshoring refers to relocating production or services to a distant country, often to reduce labour costs or take advantage of specialized expertise. It can yield significant cost savings and access to global talent, but also exposes firms to geopolitical risks, shipping delays, and reduced control over quality and oversight. 

• Nearshoring involves shifting operations or sourcing to a nearby country or region—one that lies closer in geography, culture, or time zone. The proximity allows for faster communication, shorter transit times, and improved responsiveness to market shifts, though it may come with slightly higher labour and logistics costs compared to far-off locations. 

• Re-shoring (or on-shoring) brings previously relocated operations back home, offering the greatest control, supply-chain transparency, and resilience against global disruptions. However, domestic production typically comes with higher costs, and the process of re-establishing facilities and workforces can be both expensive and time-consuming. 

Together, these strategies reflect a broader recalibration of global trade—one that weighs efficiency against resiliency, and cost against certainty. What businesses choose to employ depends on their needs and goals, but they will all have to consider the risky environment in which they exist: 

“Geoeconomic fragmentation and geopolitical tensions are expected to drive business-model transformation in one-third (34 %) of surveyed organizations in the next five years. Over one-fifth (23 %) of global employers identify increased restrictions on trade and investment … as factors shaping their operations,” states the World Economic Forum in their job report, pinpointing the need for businesses to be prepared from all angles.  

Training is a unifying factor for all roles

At the heart of these workforce transitions lies a single, unifying factor—the need for continual training and upskilling. Finding employees with a new set of in-demand skills isn’t something that happens overnight. Most often, it starts with giving current teams training to upgrade their knowledge to current-day trends. 

“If the world’s workforce was made up of 100 people, 59 would need training by 2030. Of these, employers foresee that 29 could be upskilled in their current roles and 19 could be upskilled and redeployed elsewhere within their organization. However, 11 would be unlikely to receive the reskilling or upskilling needed, leaving their employment prospects increasingly at risk,” warns the WEF. 

Lora Rigutto, Partnerships and Community Lead at FITT, agrees. She personally sees how training benefits companies and employees working in international trade daily: 

“I’ve seen how upskilling and trade training can change the trajectory of both employers and employees. Many who complete FITT’s international trade training go on to work in government, policy, and business at some of the world’s leading organizations, while others use that knowledge to grow their own SMEs.”

The world is changing, but resiliency will always remain a strength

In 2025, it may seem like our world is changing faster than ever. But it’s important to put these shifts into perspective. Only 100 years ago, we were still delivering some products by horse and buggy. 50 years ago, we were sending customs documents via fax machines, and just 25 years ago, the biggest technological threat that dominated the headlines was Y2K. The point being, the world has always been in a state of rapid change, but those who flourish in it, no matter the challenge, remain aware, prepared, and upskilled for those changes.

• Commodity Trader: Buys and sells commodities, such as agricultural products or metals, on international markets.

• Data Analyst: Analyzes data for companies to help inform business decisions, which can include international market data.  

Logistics and supply chain

• Freight Forwarder: Manages the transportation of goods, including coordinating shipments, choosing carriers, and negotiating terms.

• Customs Clearance Specialist: Processes paperwork for inbound and outbound shipments to ensure goods clear customs without delays.

• International Sales and Partnerships Manager: Develops and manages relationships with international partners and clients.

So, where do you find these lucrative jobs?  Here is a look at 10 of the best online sources trade professionals can use to find their next job.

1. LinkedIn

If you’re not yet on LinkedIn, you should be! Beyond job searching, LinkedIn is the top business networking site in the world. You can use it to upload your resume and create a detailed bio that lays out your experience and the skills that you have to offer prospective employers, but it’s also a place for conversation and connection.

Join groups of like-minded business professionals and talk shop, find out about the latest opportunities, events and more. You never know who might know someone that’s looking for a candidate just like you. LinkedIn also boasts having over 2000 international trade in the jobs posted on its site, as well as thousands more specific to international logistics, trade finance or global sales.

2. Monster

Monster.com is another titan in the online job search world. Started in 1999, it’s also one of the most experienced. Like LinkedIn, Monster also has hundreds of international trade jobs posted on its platform that currently need filling. These jobs include Senior International Trade Analyst, International Trade Export Coordinator, and Sales Associate for International Trading Company. They also post great articles featuring tips, tricks and resources to help you rise above the pack and find the right job for you.

3. Careerbuilder

CareerBuilder.com provides labor market intelligence, talent management software, and other recruitment solutions, including online career search services for more than 1,900 partners in 24 countries. There are currently over 300 jobs referencing international trade that need filling on this site, including Import/Export Coordinator, International Trade Compliance Specialist, and Senior Analyst – International Trade Compliance. Regardless of whether you are just starting your career or are highly experienced, there are many opportunities on this site.

4. Indeed

Indeed.com is a basic, no frills job search site that pulls in job postings from all over the world, using a simple, easy to use interface. You’ll find company reviews, salaries and a wide variety of jobs on its platform, including thousands specifically mentioning international trade. These jobs include International Trade Compliance Specialist, International Trade Specialist, and Trade Show Management Marketing Specialist. If you are looking to find work in the international trade industry, it can be a great place to start searching.

5. USA Jobs portal

The USA Jobs website is another good place to look. The USA Jobs portal is an aggregate source for international import export trade within the US government.  A quick search on this website will bring up international trade-related government jobs in a wide range of sectors and cities.

6. Glassdoor

More than just a job post site, Glassdoor gives you the chance to get more detailed insights into prospects with reviews of employees, employers and interview experiences as well as past salaries for specific positions. Contributors all post 100% anonymously, so you can get full transparency into companies and jobs posted. Currently, there are over 1,500 international trade jobs listed, and more are being added every day. Examples include DMS Specialist – International Trade Compliance, Trade Compliance Specialist, and International Trade – Senior Specialist.

7. ZipRecruiter

Ziprecruiter may be the site that has the largest amount of international trade jobs, as it claims to have thousands of international trade job postings. Examples of specific job titles listed include International Trade Specialist, International Trade Associate, and Senior Analyst – International Trade Compliance. Ziprecruiter boasts that you can apply for jobs with just one click! Together the volume of jobs and ease of use are two good reasons to give this site a try.

8. Snagajob

Snagajob has a very catchy title and specializes in hourly-wage jobs. But whether you are looking for a salaried or hourly-rate position, there is a high number of quality international trade jobs listed on this site. These jobs include Associate Director of Trade Revenue Systems, Trade Compliance Analyst, and Staff Counsel – US Distribution and Trade. There are hundreds of international trade positions that are currently listed on Snagajob.com, making it another great place to snag an international trade job.

9. RobertHalf

Robert Half International, is an American human resource consulting firm with over 325 locations worldwide. The website doesn’t host as many listings as sites like Ziprecruiter or LinkedIn, but that also means that there is significantly less competition for the available positions. On RobertHalf.com, there are dozens of international trade jobs listed, including Export Clerk, Customs Declaration Assistant, and Export Specialist.

While there is no shortage of positions available for the global business savvy professionals out there, we’ve identified the top five jobs that are growing in both demand for employees and salary.

1. Interpreters and Translators

• Demand up 6.46% (projected to grow 29% by 2024)
• Salary growth continues to rise; consistently top paying field

Education needed:  Professional accreditation and language certifications, bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration an asset, international certification an asset

Why the demand?

A recent study found that global companies with multilingual websites performed better financially. Seems like common sense, doesn’t it? Being able to easily and effectively communicate with your target audience is undoubtedly important to your company’s bottom line.

It takes a minimum of 14 languages to reach 90% of the world’s online GDP.

Interpreters and translators who can improve communication between a company and its clients, employees and partners will continue to be sought after in the years to come. In fact, the growth rate in the translation industry has been increasing, and was at 6.46% last year. The profession is projected to grow 29% from 2014 to 2024.

Industries using the most languages include automotive, medical devices, software products, and pharmaceuticals, but opportunities exist in virtually all sectors.

Speaking a second language is a great first step, but it’s important to note that being fluent isn’t the only requirement to becoming a professional translator or interpreter. Like any other profession, it requires practice, experience, and training. Besides reading, writing and speaking fluently in at least two languages, a translator must be able to convert concepts in the source language to equivalent concepts in the target language, compile information and technical terms into glossaries and terminology databases, and relay the correct tone and style of the original language.

It is these intricate skills that keep professional translator/interpreter roles largely safe from the threat of automation. As the demand for translation increases, so will the use of machines. However, translating web content and marketing copy doesn’t equate to a simple word-for-word translation that you could get from a machine.

2. International Trade Finance Manager

• Demand up 17%
• Salary growth up 21%

Education needed: Bachelor’s degree, MBA or other master’s degree, licensure, international and financial certifications

Why the demand?

Financial institutions employ a number of trained professionals to navigate the complex and constantly changing international market, requiring a unique set of skills.

International trade finance professionals develop plans and strategies involving exchange rates, foreign investments and other factors affecting global finance.

There is no shortage of career opportunities in international banking, financial management, business development and trade.

There are financial jobs in almost every company, in all sectors. And as more companies extend their client bases through international expansion, the demand for international finance services will continue to increase.

3. Market Research Analysts

• Demand growing
• Salary growth continues to rise; consistently top paying field

Education needed:  Bachelor’s degree in market research, marketing or statistics, research and international certifications an asset

Why the demand?

Monster.ca has ranked Market Research Analysts in the top eight jobs of the future, and while it may be aided by developments in artificial intelligence and big data, you can rest assured this is one position that won’t be lost to automation in the foreseeable future.

International markets are in constant flux as the global business environment changes with political and economic developments. Companies need to stay on top of who their competition is, who is purchasing their products, and where the opportunities for growth are. This kind of intelligence is already a key driver behind most businesses, making market research analysts an indispensable member of any staff, and salaries will continue to reflect that.

4. International Marketing Consultant

• Salary growth up 18%

Education needed: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marketing or Business Management, MBA an asset, international certifications an asset

Why the demand?

Much like a market research analyst, marketing consultants have to keep tabs on the constantly changing global trade landscape and identify strategies and opportunities to sell a company’s products and services.

International marketing consultants must also stay on top of cultural intricacies, and identify the right messaging and implementation plan to succeed in markets around the world.

Companies are increasingly targeting “small or micro-markets”, highly specific niche markets within a traditionally wider region, a task that requires even more skill and precision.

Positions are available in almost every sector, so the opportunities are everywhere, but as such they vary widely in specific specialties and salaries. So look for the niche that best fits your personality and aptitude and seek related training to add to your competencies. This will give you the best shot at the competitive higher paying positions out there.

5. International Business Development

• Demand up 59%
• Salary growth up 17%

Education needed: Bachelor’s degree, MBA or Master’s degree preferred, international certification an asset

Why the demand?

International business development professionals play a key role in the global businesses they work for. Working in a variety of international markets, they are vital to their companies’ growth as they develop new customers and maintain relationships with their current customers.

IBD professionals need to be able to master and balance a handful of important tasks such as establishing the feasibility of entering new international markets, expansion planning and market entry strategies, adapting products and services, sales and marketing, and international law and ethics.

If this sounds like a tall order, it’s because it is! That’s why it’s one of the most sought after, growing positions in global trade today.

Salaries range from sector to sector and are widely affected by commission, but this can be a very lucrative position for those who have the skills.

The import/export business is heating up and with massive trade deals looming, booming emerging markets and increased demand in the service industry, it’s no wonder.

Statistics show that the global trade industry is growing, and with it opportunities to increase sales and profits, grow your market share and client base, expand your workforce and reduce the risk to your business.

So how can you get in on this trend, and do you have what it takes to be successful in this type of endeavour?

We asked two global trade experts who have experience running their own successful businesses about the realities of starting an import/export business. Here’s what they have to say.

What kind of professional qualifications and experience do you need to start an import/export business?

Paula (Lunn) Greene, CITP|FIBP, President and CEO of BEYOND Ventures Group:

The professional qualifications of a successful salesperson or business owner are similar whether you are selling domestically or internationally.

However, those that are importing and exporting internationally will need to take the time to research and have the knowledge to go beyond the border.

And if you’re dealing with controlled goods or dangerous goods, to be successful, you will need to have great attention to detail, to make sure requirements are met at all times.

If you can read a recipe, you can import and export. It’s all in being able to follow the necessary steps: do the research, get the right training, find the right products, suppliers, partners, marketing, etc.

Alberto Quiroz, CITP|FIBP, Global B2B Business Development and Sales Leader:

People who have had local success selling their product or service can also be successful internationally – you can only export what you have.

If you’re not successful at home, it’s going to be very difficult to be successful abroad. Having a strong entrepreneurial spirit is important.

You need to be able to think fast on your toes, find the resources you need right away, and not be afraid to find the right people and go out and do it.

But you need to know your product and your markets well.

Entrepreneurs make a lot of mistakes and fail. The ones that are successful because of an idea and a hunch are in the minority. People who are more likely to be successful are the ones who know what they’re doing.

They know the global trade industry. They’ve been to school, got the necessary education and training – or found those resources (professionals who know the market, global trade environment) to take you there.

In the end, even if you plan to depend on hiring the right people and services to assist your import/export business, it is incumbent on you to know what’s required. Success in importing and exporting ultimately comes down to the right training, research to know what you’re doing, and taking the time to do it right.

What type of personality lends itself best to this kind of work?

Paula (Lunn) Greene: It really helps to be well-rounded, someone who is able to put their head down and do the research, because it’s extremely important to follow through on that.

It’s also very important to be a good communicator and adapt to different people and different audiences. You need to be aware of how people will perceive your messages in both verbal and in written form, in marketing materials and face-to-face meetings.

Being able to read body language, and being aware of how different cultures would receive what is being said, is key to success in this industry.

Building on that, someone who is open and adaptable to other cultures they may not be familiar with will also have an advantage in importing and exporting.

It’s always exciting to be engaged in foreign cultures and understand what’s most important to them, to be able to serve them better.

Alberto Quiroz: Someone who is able to listen and understand that every culture is different and needs to be treated differently will have a greater chance at success in international business.

Being naturally outgoing and social can help, but introverted people can be just as successful – if not more so – because they often listen more. Taking the time to really listen to prospective clients helps to understand their needs better.

You have to be very, very flexible on how to approach a market – that includes flexibility in the product itself, the pricing, and packaging. And you have to consider that in any given region there may be local bylaws or requirements that would necessitate changes to your products and the way you sell your products.

Unless you have a product that is explosive on the market, you need to be prepared to adapt your product to fit the needs of the market you are selling to.

Even high demand, seemingly universal products can fail in new markets when they neglect to adapt.

MacDonald’s is a great example; the menu changes from region to region to provide offerings that match the local tastes. They serve seaweed seasoning with their fries in Japan, McKebabs in Israel, pitas in Greece and triple bratwurst sandwiches in Germany. Apply your concept, and adapt it to what the market wants to buy.

So you need to read and understand the market. Another example of a product forced to adapt to fit into a new market was Mars bars in Mexico. The price of North American size candy bars was too expensive to Mexican consumers, so Mars changed the size, offering smaller chocolate bars to match the market’s economic capacity.

At the end of the day, there are all kinds of people who are successful in the industry.

What kind of work will I be doing? Will I be sitting in an office all day, meeting with people around the world, travelling?

Paula (Lunn) Greene: Yes to all. If you’re looking at working in international markets, you should be aware that the traditional 9-5 work day is not a reality.

You may be up at 5am conversing with the EU, or up late at night speaking to clients in Australia or the Middle East. As an international business practitioner you are very much at the mercy of the world clock – where your clients are.

Sometimes that means long days, to ensure that your work and your clients’ needs are fully met.

The good news is, this time shifting be a benefit, because if you’re working with someone who is in a time zone behind yours you can gain an extra day to deliver on timelines.

Since it’s not a typical office day, you get to control your schedule based on what makes sense for you and your clients.

A word to the wise on scheduling – a lot of people getting into international trade for the first time often make the mistake of not being aware of the holidays and traditions of their new target market(s).

If I was looking to travel to the EU to meet clients in spring, for example, I might find that most of them are out on holidays. In that region and that culture it is quite common to take your vacation time near traditional holidays like Easter.

You should also be aware that business etiquette differs in many respects around the world. For example, the expected turn-around time in response to an inquiry in Asia is a matter of hours, not overnight or a few days later as in some other cultures.

You could miss out on business opportunities by missing these types of timelines.

There are many benefits to scheduling around an importer exporter’s day, along with long days, there are often exciting opportunities to build relationships with people all around the world and become familiar with their unique customs. It’s a very exciting profession.

The typical day is never a typical day.

Alberto Quiroz: Your day will be what you can make of it, it’s really up to you and the type of business you want to run. There will be lots of travel, and networking is very important, but you can make a balance. You don’t need to be on the road all of the time.

Your typical work week will include all of the above: office work and research, networking and traveling to meet clients and attend trade shows. But it’s much easier now to use technology to connect with clients in different regions such as Skype and VOIP and email.

Although, nothing trumps face to face visits and there are many cultures that still do business this way. Human contact is a must.

You will find that business travel often comes in seasons; trade shows and networking events are more common in the spring and fall. Your downtime in the less hectic travel seasons can be your time to do research and product development.

Is it possible to start an import/export business on the side – without quitting a full-time job?

Paula (Lunn) Greene: It is definitely possible to import and export part-time, I’ve frequently worked with startups who did so. The non-traditional hours can be an advantage for those that work full time during the day.

The ability to work outside of the traditional business hours with overseas clients makes it possible to manage this type of business on the side, over evenings and weekends.

Often people who want to do this on top of their full-time work commitments put a base in place for a company that they can build on over time. And later on, they will make a choice about whether or not they want to launch full-time into their import/export business, or sell what they’ve established at a profit.

To do it successfully part-time, it’s even more important to take advantage of coaches, mentors, and specialized training to do it right. The FITTskills training opened my eyes to many aspects of import/export that I wasn’t aware of, even though I was already working in international trade.

Fortunately, there are a lot of resources available that are not a big cost/time commitment to help guide newcomers to importing and exporting.

Alberto Quiroz: It’s possible to do this part-time if you want to. For me, it’s a full-time job because I chose to make the commitment. There has to be a high level of commitment, or you need to find the resources to run the business for you.
