Some careers are carefully planned. Others unfold through unexpected turns, revealing exactly where someone is meant to be. For Godwin Aigbokhan, CITP, international trade began with a happenstance job opportunity with a friend.

“I entered the field of international trade by accident. I used to work in the development sector, specializing in private sector development. One day, a vacancy arose in an organization I was affiliated with, and a friend of mine resigned to join the development organization I was working for at the time. So, essentially, we switched roles,” he states.

That chance transition opened the door to what would become a deeply impactful trade career that now sees him facilitating bilateral trade between Canadian and Nigerian companies with the Trade Commissioner Service, a position he’s been in for over 3 years.

Showcasing adaptability in business during COVID-19

One of Godwin’s most memorable career moments occurred during a period of global crisis: COVID-19. With borders closed and companies unsure of their next move, Godwin helped design a fully virtual model for engagement.

“During the pandemic, I organized both a virtual delegation trip and a virtual trade show. It was a fascinating experience as there was no template to guide my team.”

Over 1,000 participants from five countries joined the online trade show, an extraordinary number for a first-time digital event. Even more remarkable, several companies that learned about Nigeria for the first time through the show have since executed several projects in the country.

In a moment defined by uncertainty, Godwin created a new pathway for partnership and proved his sharp skill for innovation and adaptability within the world of trade.

Finding hidden opportunities for good

Throughout his career, Godwin has discovered a unique strength: the ability to identify connections and commercial possibilities that aren’t obvious at first glance.

“I believe I have a talent for identifying obscure opportunities across different industries.”

For him, the most rewarding moments come when companies validate those introductions—turning “hidden” opportunities into tangible impact.

An example of this talent at work came with the development of a digital circular-economy marketplace. The project “allowed for the categorization and trading of household waste on an individual basis and diverted waste from landfills,” he states. His work relied on innovative trade models and showed how these can directly support sustainability and community development.

Advice for trade professionals: Be adaptable—it will serve you well

International trade is rarely linear and Godwin learned early that rigid plans do not survive long in fast-moving environments.

“

If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be to be adaptable, because the best-laid plans mean nothing if you can’t implement them. I learned this during the pandemic.”

Able to pivot and thrive during these circumstances himself, his advice proves useful in the current trade ecosystem.

Affirming his experience through FITTskills training

Godwin’s experience with the FITTskills program helped clarify and validate all the hands-on work he’s undertaken throughout his career.

“Taking the FITTskills courses was a truly affirmative experience for me, as I was able to fit almost every activity I have undertaken in my career into the frameworks and models I learnt about during the courses. This made me feel as though none of my previous work was random. I am very grateful for this experience.”

His favourite course—International Market Entry Strategies—felt especially familiar. “I have actually, in one way or another, implemented all of the strategies in my career,” he says, adding that he loved being able to connect each strategy to a specific activity and company in his work history.

The power of competence with a CITP

Godwin was inspired to get his Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation because he wanted to project a high level of trade aptitude. “As an international trade professional, I want to project a certain level of competence,” he says, adding that “Earning the CITP designation would enhance my profile and help me to achieve this.”

Not an easy feat to achieve, he feels “very proud” to have gained the designation and he sees it opening new doors for him within his organization. He also hopes that with it, he can play a role in helping his home country flourish with trade.

“Currently, Africa represents only 3% of global trade, and Nigeria, my home country, has one of the lowest trade-to-GDP figures in the world at just 2%. I believe that by creating platforms for businesses to connect and discover hidden trade opportunities, it will be possible to create jobs, increase incomes, and improve living standards across the continent.”

A future focused on global growth

With a blend of development experience, trade insight, and a gift for uncovering unseen opportunities, Godwin is charting a path that bridges public policy, private enterprise, and international collaboration.

Earned his CITP®|FIBP® designation: December 2025

For Evan Buie, CITP, the path into international trade began with a genuine interest in global business and early career experiences that opened doors into the world of cross-border commerce.

“I had always been drawn to international business and took many courses covering the subject for my undergraduate degree,” he says. After graduating, he entered a role as Coordinator of International Relations in Hokkaido, Japan, giving him a first taste of what a career that spanned across continents and cultures would be like.

As it turns out, “taste” would become a thematic word in his career journey, beginning with his next two roles upon returning to Canada, ones that would see him serving two multi-national food and beverage giants.

Those opportunities became the launchpad into his first formal trade role. “This experience helped me secure my first position in international trade, focusing on East Asia and Oceania, with the Government of Alberta’s Export Development Team within the Ministry of Agriculture,” he notes.

Bringing Alberta exporters to the world and the world to Alberta

During his time with the Government of Alberta, Evan had the opportunity to host several delegations from overseas. One of his most memorable experiences came early on:

“One of my first delegations involved a Chinese chef and his social media team in Calgary. We went to cattle ranches and multiple local, hidden gem restaurants. Seeing their excitement when they tasted the local delicacies or seeing the Rocky Mountains for the first time was hugely enjoyable.”

He also recalls the energy of taking Alberta companies abroad: “I also had a chance to lead an Alberta delegation of companies to Japan for a three-city tabletop expo.”

“Seeing the companies in their element, talking with prospective buyers, and making deals is why I do the work I do. Karaoke was a blast too!”

These moments, equal parts cultural exchange and trade development, reinforced his desire to help Canadian businesses grow internationally, while fostering meaningful relationships with exporters overseas.

A major milestone: becoming a Trade Commissioner

“One of my proudest professional accomplishments was being hired by Global Affairs Canada as a Trade Commissioner,” Evan says, describing the achievement as a highlight of his career. In this role, he has taken on leadership of one of Western Canada’s emerging agri-food showcases:

“I’ve had the pleasure of co-leading the Taste of Western Canada, a food and beverage tabletop showcase held during the iconic Calgary Stampede.”

A huge undertaking, the third iteration of the show will bring together 80 Western Canada agri-food and beverage companies and over 75 domestic and international buyers, making it one of the most targeted food and beverage events in all of Western Canada. “Its potential for further growth is enormous,” Evan states.

Discovering that business results don’t happen overnight

Over the years, Evan has developed a deeper appreciation for the persistence and patience required in global commerce. He notes that professionals in trade must have a deep level of dedication to make international transactions and partnerships come together. Reading about it may make it seem simple in theory, but “…it is another to live it.” he states.

“The time commitments that companies put into their international business development efforts can take years before they are rewarded. Overnight successes are not the norm.”

How FITTskills training strengthened his confidence

When Evan enrolled in FITTskills courses, he discovered how helpful comprehensive and structured learning could be. He enjoyed how the program pushed him to focus on the course content for an extended period of time, when otherwise, many topics may have only come up in passing or infrequently on the job. The fact that the topics were broken into digestible chapters made the process easier too.

In fact, the format became a practical tool he continues to rely on.

“I have since gone back to the textbooks for specific content when following up with clients. The courses have also made me feel more confident in my interactions with companies as I am better positioned to advise them on the FITTskills course topics.”

With his FITTskills training complete, Evan feels like a more well-rounded international trade professional, one that can confidently approach clients and international business with advice and solutions.

This confidence would become apparent after taking his favourite course, International Trade Finance: “I found it quite challenging as the content is material that I would have historically referred companies to other service providers for advice on (i.e. EDC), but I learned a lot and can speak more confidently to the content now,” he notes.

Pursuing the reputation of the CITP designation

Evan chose to apply for the Certified International Trade Professional CITP®|FIBP® designation to “highlight my educational achievement, knowledge obtained, and to add a reputable designation to my resume, LinkedIn page, and signature line,” he says. It’s a credential he views as both reputable and meaningful, something worth showcasing across his professional profile.

Earning it was also another proud milestone to add to his career highlights. Understanding how valuable the designation can be going forward, he feels it adds another layer of credibility to his work:

“I’ve been told that if I were to apply to a job in the future, and all things being equal otherwise, the candidate with the CITP designation would get the job.”

A bright future building Canada’s trade relationships with other countries

As he continues to support Canadian businesses entering international markets, Evan’s CITP designation will help reinforce the guidance he provides, grounded not only in experience, but in globally recognized best practices. It will also, if his trend in food and agriculture continues, be filled with flavourful adventures.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are driving more of North America’s export activity than ever before. According to Global Affairs Canada, SME export participation rose from 10.4% in 2011 to 12.1% in 2020. Across the U.S., small businesses account for about one-third of all known exporting firms, supplying goods and services to over 200 markets worldwide. This international activity isn’t happening in a vacuum, either.

As Rupert Lee-Browne of the Forbes Council puts it, “small and medium businesses are driving economies across the globe.”

But here’s the truth: expanding into global markets isn’t easy, by a long shot. SMEs grapple with a mix of logistical, regulatory, and financial hurdles – not to mention trade disputes. Thankfully, for SMEs, understanding global rules and available support resources can make international expansion far less intimidating.

The good news? North America has begun to invest heavily in training, upskilling, and advisory programs. These resources are helping Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) exporters enter new markets. Read on to learn how SMEs can turn global trade challenges into new and exciting growth opportunities.

Small Businesses Are Making a Huge Impact Across North America

The North American economy is powered by small businesses. Over 99% of Canadian businesses are small or medium-sized, and 99.9% of all American companies are small. Although mega-enterprises tend to dominate the headlines, SMEs (especially micro-firms with less than 10 employees) are making more and more headway in the world of international trade.

Canada’s Growing Export Engine

Canadian small businesses have steadily expanded their global footprint. Per this Government of Canada resource:

SMEs generated over 53% of Canada’s GDP from 2015 to 2019.

SME export intensity rose from 3.5% to 5.0% over the last decade.

The strongest SME export industries range from manufacturing and professional services to transportation and wholesale trade.

Micro-firms (1–4 employees) are the fastest-growing group of new exporters.

Service exports have jumped sharply; by 2020, 62.4% of SME exporters were selling their services abroad.

The U.S. Picture

U.S. small businesses export in different patterns but show similar momentum:

Roughly 97% of U.S. exporters are small businesses, according to the U.S. International Trade Administration.

MSMEs generated over $542 billion in export value in 2021.

More SMEs are exploring markets beyond the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) region, particularly in Asia, Europe, and South America.

Deputy Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Commercial Service, Bradley McKinney, says the America First Trade Policy has helped create “opportunities for U.S. businesses, especially small businesses, to sell their products and services around the globe.” And specific to Canada, the WTO’s Joint Statement Initiative has been instrumental in modernizing trade rules, boosting transparency, and alleviating the administrative burdens on smaller firms.

Together, Canadian and American SMEs are reshaping what North American trade looks like; it’s more digital, more diversified, and more resilient overall.

The Main Challenges Small Businesses Face When Going Global

Even though SME’s global trade influence is apparent in the U.S. and growing in Canada, SMEs still face formidable barriers when entering international markets. Some of the most common obstacles include:

Regulatory Complexity

Each country has different trade rules, certifications, labeling standards, safety requirements, and documentation procedures. For SMEs with very limited staff and resources, it can be highly difficult to keep up. Regulatory issues and violations can have several negative effects:

Slow shipments

Increased trade-related costs

Problems entering new markets

The World Trade Organization (WTO) sums this up in an informative briefing: “Small firms are less resilient to regulatory changes, have less resources to adapt, are less able to absorb the costs of administrative requirements, and cannot spread these costs across a larger cost base.”

Access to Financial Backing

Exporting requires working capital for expenses like production, shipping, compliance, and insurance, all of which are essential for successful international trade.

Considering the general business climate, smaller firms often struggle to secure trade financing, especially when selling to new or unfamiliar markets. Many of these companies are simply trying to stay afloat in their home market.

Limited Market Intelligence

Many SMEs don’t have the time, resources, or specialized expertise to navigate the complexities of international trade. Specifically, they often struggle to:

Analyze market demand: Figuring out what will sell and at what price can be tricky without in-depth research into foreign markets.

Find distributors or agents: Finding and collaborating with dependable local partners is a challenge, but it’s a must for smooth operations.

Assess risks: Shipping delays, currency swings, and other risks are rife in global trade, and the uncertainties can be paralyzing.

Understand cultural or legal differences: Missteps in global regulations, labeling, or business etiquette can cost a business dearly.

Attempting to export goods or services without this knowledge can result in:

Missed compliance deadlines

Rejected shipments

Poor partner choices

These missteps not only eat into profits but can also damage a company’s reputation and delay its ability to scale internationally. Over time, repeated mistakes can completely stall growth and make global expansion exceedingly risky.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management

International shipping can be incredibly complex, and many SMEs are ill-prepared for its intricacies. To get products from point A to point B, firms have to navigate customs procedures, Incoterms, insurance requirements, warehousing options, and return policies that vary widely by country.

For companies that have grown accustomed to domestic operations, keeping track of each of these moving parts can be overwhelming. In addition to that, mistakes can lead to higher costs, frustrated customers, and various other negative effects.

Trade Disputes and Geopolitical Uncertainty

Disputes over tariffs, subsidies, and market access aren’t uncommon in international trade situations. They often disrupt supply chains, raise costs, or force companies to tweak their export strategies. On-the-fly changes can hit smaller firms harder since they have fewer resources to absorb sudden shocks.

The reality for small businesses may be sobering, but these obstacles are highly navigable with the right support.

Resources Available to Small Exporters

North America has built an extensive ecosystem of programs to help SMEs build global capability. Here are the most important categories and where to find trusted support.

Training Programs

These programs give SMEs the foundational skills they need to navigate global markets.

FITTskills International Trade Training. Globally-recognized online courses that let you learn essential international business skills at your own pace.

Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) Learning Hub. Offers free courses, webinars, and market intelligence on exporting basics, trade agreements, cultural considerations, and industry-specific opportunities.

U.S. Commercial Service Webinars and Bootcamps. Covers export readiness, e-commerce, documentation, customs, and compliance.

Small Business Administration (SBA) Export Training in the U.S. Includes step-by-step export planning modules, plus sector-specific sessions.

Upskilling and Digital Tools

When small businesses continually refine their skills and employ the right digital tools, they can operate with far more confidence in global markets. Start with the following:

Canada Digital Adoption Program (CDAP). Helps SMEs implement digital tools, automation, CRM systems, and e-commerce stores.

Export.gov’s Market Research Library. Grants free access to country reports, sector guides, and opportunity analyses.

ITA Digital Strategies for Global Sales. Educates users on cross-border e-commerce, online marketplaces, and digital marketing.

These tools make exporting more accessible and predictable, reducing operational barriers that stand in the way of international business for SMEs.

Consulting Services and One-on-One Support

SMEs perform best when they have advisors who understand their industry, target markets, and risk profile. These consulting and support resources can be a tremendous help:

Trade Commissioner Service Advisors. Deliver matchmaking, market entry guidance, local introductions, and trade mission opportunities.

EDC Export Advisors. Offer consulting on financing, insurance, cash-flow planning, and buyer risk assessment.

SBA Export Assistance Centers (USEACs). Provide hands-on help with regulations, financing, and export planning.

Provincial Trade Promotion Organizations. Deliver localized guidance, mentorship, and industry-specific expertise.

Whether you train digitally or in person, advisory services help to propel MSMEs from intention to action.

Get Started in the World of International Trade

Exporting is no longer reserved for massive corporations with deep pockets and global networks. SMEs across North America are expanding into new markets at a growing pace, supported by stronger training programs, more accessible advisory services, and a steadily improving export ecosystem.

If you’ve been thinking about international expansion, now is the time to take the first step. Start out small:

Take a FITTskills course.

Book a call with a trade advisor.

Explore one new market using government-provided market data.

Pilot a single product or service internationally.

The global marketplace only gets broader with time. With solid know-how, professional support, and confidence, MSME exporters won’t just participate – they’ll thrive.

If you are in business in Canada, then chances are you could start an export business. You may thrive solely on local and regional trade, but if you are thinking about whether you should export your goods or services, chances are exports are a path to growth for you.

Gaps in knowledge are among the top reasons that some small and microbusinesses don’t yet export their goods or services, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

Regulatory hurdles and expenses are other factors keeping many small businesses local. This guide to exporting provides an overview and resources to help you get started if you want to sell your products and services in international markets.

How international trade affects Canadian businesses

In recent years, government statistics show that international trade accounted for nearly two-thirds of the Canadian GDP.

Canadian business exports add 3.3 million jobs to the economy. To put that in context, that’s nearly one in six Canadian jobs.

Even if your business is secure, you may still want to scale it to take advantage of opportunities for growth.

For businesses of any size, exporting provides the opportunity to find new markets, scale your business, and become more resilient in a volatile economy. Yet, as recent research from the CFIB shows, only a minority of Canadian small and medium-sized businesses are currently seizing these opportunities.

Step 1: Are you ready to join the global market?

The first step is to decide whether your business is ready to expand into international trade. Identify which of your products or servicesmay appeal to consumers in other countries. Next, figure out whether the investment is likely to be worth it by doing a feasibility study and thorough market research.

FITT’s Export Vision Board can help you realize what exporting might look like for your business.

You can use the Export Vision Board template to visualize and capture the critical components for your international market expansion.

If you’re not sure what to include, there are 3 examples of completed templates including B2B product exports, B2C product exports, and service exports to inspire you and help you get started.

If you want to dig deeper, consider taking some training like the Feasibility of International Trade course, which was designed to help businesses of all sizes assess whether international opportunities are viable, and if the potential benefits outweigh the risks and costs.

Once you decide whether exporting is a good move for your business, start making a plan so your actions will be strategic, not accidental. Identify your target consumers and how you offer something better than what they might find locally.

Continue to revise and change your export plan as you learn more.

Step 2: Learn the bureaucratic requirements for your industry

Each industry has its own set of regulations and laws to work within when it comes to exporting or importing.

Exporting in Canada means actively engaging with multiple government, legal, and financial frameworks.

Your first step is learning what is required within your industry. For example, exporters must comply with regulations enforced by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). These regulations may include export classification, permit requirements, and rules for export reporting in Canada.

The value of your product plays a role. All exports above $2,000 require a declaration using the CBSA’s Canadian Export Reporting System (CERS) and may also need special permits from Global Affairs Canada. Also, don’t forget taxes that may apply, like Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

As you unravel the requirements, use that information to update your plan. Does this knowledge change the logistics of how you will get the product or service to your prospective customers abroad? How does this affect your budget and costs? How will you cover these added expenses?

Not only do you need to be aware of Canadian trade regulations, but also those in your export destination country. Once you have a sense of the fees, taxes, and tariffs involved, you are in a better position to plan. Just be aware that laws, tariffs, and taxes change.

If you have been keeping up with U.S. news, you may wonder if now is the right time with increased tariffs on certain exports to the United States.

In international trade, like in life, change is one of the few constants.

These changes and potential culture changes make the new trade environment more complex, but you have a couple of options.

Now is a time when you could focus on building your market outside the U.S., or you could focus on learning the ins and outs of expanding your North American market. Either option has a unique set of challenges, and both require a nimble approach as you adapt to any unfolding changes.

Step 3: Identify your supply chain and budget

Map out the specifics within your supply chain from planning, manufacturing, marketing, and getting the product to your consumers. If you offer a service, this may be easier, but you should go through the same steps.

Some of these steps are likely already part of your business workflow. Spend a little extra time on the added steps, such as any permits and reporting you may need to do. Also, note any changes to your product as your export country may have specific standards for its own regulations, safety standards, or documentation requirements. Will you need to translate any of your packaging or materials?

Update your plan and put together a budget. Do you need to raise additional capital in order to build the export branch of your business? If so, take the time to look into business development loans, grants, and investment capital options.

Step 4: Develop your marketing and fulfillment plan

Marketing your products abroad is challenging. But thanks to the internet and social media, your customers are more accessible than ever. The hard part can be effectively communicating with potential customers in a language you are not fluent in. If this is your plan, be sure to partner with a quality translation and localization service.

Since you take on additional financial risks when exporting, you want to be sure to conduct market research and develop a comprehensive marketing strategy.

At this point, you may be in a better position to revisit your risk assessment. What are your export-specific risks beyond those you face as an entrepreneur in your home country? Craft a plan to mitigate those risks.

In summary, learning how to export in Canada is a multi-step process that includes:

Assessing whether your business is ready

Developing an export vision that aligns with your business goals

Conducting market research as well as feasibility analysis

Understanding export regulations and compliance

Managing tax, payment, and GST/HST implications

Identifying and managing export-specific risks

Building a formal export plan with a timeline for implementation

The challenges and complexities of running an export business can be overwhelming. But there is plenty of support available to businesses of all sizes looking to grow globally.

The thing that trips up many businesses that are new to importing and exporting is “knowing what they don’t know”.

Or in other words, getting a full picture of what is involved in setting themselves up for success in international markets, and how to avoid common pitfalls that come with inexperience.

Exploring training to fill in knowledge gaps, hiring outside help that bring in much-needed expertise, and seeking guidance from trade advisors and locally-engaged support such as the Trade Commissioner Service, can make what may seem daunting doable.

Earned his elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: August 2024

Michael Whitmarsh has built an impressive career in international trade, with a focus on supply chain management, corporate development, and global expansion. His journey, driven by a passion for business and exploration, illustrates the profound impact that mentors and continual learning experiences can have on a career.

An international career from the beginning

Michael’s career in international trade began at Weatherford International, where he managed U.S.-based purchasing and global logistics across 21 countries. It was the perfect starting point for a young professional fresh out of the University of Houston, where he earned a double major in Economics and Spanish.

“Being born and raised in Houston, the oilfield industry was a natural calling for me,” Michael explains.

His dual expertise in supply chain and international relations helped him transition into the global scene.

From the outset, Michael’s work exposed him to the complexities of international business, allowing him to combine his love for travel with his skills for business development.

“Once I started doing business across borders, I developed a passion for international trade.”

He continued to gain experience with Holloway, an NOV distributor, where his exposure to global markets solidified his passion and set him on the path to become a leader in the oilfield industry.

Leading Block 4 Oilfield, LLC

Today, Michael leads Block 4 Oilfield, LLC, one of the fastest-growing oilfield companies, with operations in the U.S., South America, and the Middle East. Under his leadership, the company has expanded through strategic sales, acquisitions, and entry into international markets.

“I’ve spearheaded the growth from day one through my understanding of international markets, business development, sales, and marketing.”

His dual expertise in supply chain management and corporate development has allowed him to navigate the complexities of global trade and strategically grow Block 4 Oilfield.

“My career has been two-pronged. My first ten years focused on supply chain, purchasing, and logistics, while the second half has been corporate development, setting up distributors, and entering different markets,” Michael said.

This unique combination of skills has made him an effective leader, capable of taking his company into new and challenging regions around the globe.

The Role of FITTskills and the CITP designation in his growth

For Michael, the FITTskills program and the CITP designation provided the formal education and credentials necessary to elevate his career in international trade. His decision to pursue the FITTskills courses stemmed from his interactions with Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) and Export Development Canada (EDC), two organizations that played a pivotal role in his understanding of international business. Michael explains,

“I knew that FITT, being associated with EDC, was an outstanding organization to seek training and obtain certification from.”

Michael found the FITTskills courses particularly valuable in areas where he needed to strengthen his expertise, such as trade finance. “Finance was the side of trade where I was weaker before the training,” he admitted, but the courses helped him “add a lot of skills to [his] belt.”

His favorite course, Feasibility of International Trade, gave him a deeper understanding of the risks and benefits of entering new markets.

“It provided useful tools in risk analysis and risk management, tools that I use on a daily basis in my position.”

His CITP designation, which he earned through the FITTskills program, also helped Michael distinguish himself as a global trade expert. “I’m extremely proud to have the CITP designation and to present myself as an expert in international trade,” Michael said.

The credential not only proves his expertise but also connects him to a network of professionals who share his dedication to ethical business practices and ongoing professional development.

A world of lessons through global experiences

Michael’s career has taken him to over 20 countries, providing him with rich cultural experiences and an understanding of how different regions approach international trade. He shared some of his favorite stories, such as working in the Middle East, where relationship-building is paramount before discussing business.

“In Abu Dhabi, we would talk about families and personal experiences over tea or eat Mandi on the floor in a traditional manner before business even came up,” Michael recounted. This cultural insight helped him adapt to various regions and avoid the pitfalls of international etiquette.

His experiences in Latin America, Singapore, and the Middle East have taught him to “do as the Romans do” — to adapt to local customs and respect cultural differences. “You’ll pick up on things really quickly,” Michael advised.

He stressed the importance of researching local customs and relying on networks like expat communities or experienced colleagues for guidance when entering new markets.

Inspirational mentorship from an industry leader

A key influence in Michael Whitmarsh’s career has been his mentor, John Samuels III, a legendary figure in the energy and commodities trading industries. Michael met John during his time in the Middle East, and they collaborated on several projects, including commodity trading deals between the U.S. and the Middle East, as well as launching an oilfield rental company in Sharjah, UAE.

John’s incredible career trajectory—starting from humble beginnings in Galveston, Texas, to building a corporate empire with diverse holdings—served as a powerful inspiration to Michael.

John’s vast knowledge of business, his grace under pressure, and his ability to intertwine personal life with professional success left a lasting impression.

“What really impressed me with him is that he has all this knowledge, all this personal life experience… he’s probably the most interesting man in the world.”

John, often referred to as “The Great Gatsby” due to his larger-than-life persona, had a profound understanding of commodity trading and global markets, especially through his role in helping to launch the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange.

For Michael, learning from someone with such a rich blend of business acumen and personal integrity was invaluable.

“He handled everything with such grace… despite all of his accomplishments, he was still so humble,” Michael said.

This mentorship not only shaped Michael’s approach to business but also deepened his passion for international trade and global markets.

Among his many accomplishments, Michael is particularly proud of establishing the first international distribution hub as an NOV distributor in Dubai.

“I performed all the market intelligence prior to entering the market, found the lowest-cost ports, staffed the company, and adapted the policies to local cultural and legal requirements.”

This project not only positioned his company as a master stocking distributor for the Eastern Hemisphere but also highlighted his strategic expertise in global business development.

Michael also sites his work with the Canadian Trade Commissioner’s office and EDC as motivating factors in his career development. These organizations helped him navigate international markets, meet high-profile players, and secure contracts with drilling contractors in regions like Argentina and Cuba.

Michael’s experience working with these agencies further cemented his passion for international trade and gave him a profound respect for the role government organizations can play in supporting businesses.

Looking to the future

Michael believes his CITP designation will continue to play a pivotal role in his future career.

“The CITP designation will open many doors to opportunities that I may not have otherwise been offered.”

As he continues to grow Block 4 Oilfield and explore new global markets, Michael remains committed to leveraging his expertise and credentials to drive success. Whether it’s through acquisitions, mergers, or strategic partnerships, his future looks bright, fueled by the knowledge and tools he’s gained through the FITTskills program and the CITP designation.

See why it’s the world’s most recognized designation for competency and credibility in global business.

Adding credibility to experience and expertise with the CITP designation

For those considering taking their business into an international market, Michael has one key piece of advice:

“Understand the tools related to international trade finance. From Letters of Credit to Export Credit Agencies, each tool is extremely helpful to hedge a growth strategy and to best position oneself in a given market.”

With his deep experience, global perspective, and the CITP designation, Michael Whitmarsh is not just a leader in the oilfield industry — he’s a prime example of how education and professional certification can propel a career to international heights.

Another notable occasion when Julien’s innate problem-solving skills came to the fore was while he was part of an official, high-level diplomatic delegation to meet with the executive leadership of one of the world’s largest healthcare corporations.

The situation became complicated when just a few hours before the meeting, a health scandal broke out, making allegations against the company they were scheduled to meet with. As this triggered an immediate public reaction from the Minister of Health back home, the onus was on Julien to navigate the sticky situation.

Displaying exceptional stress management skills, he delivered a last-minute confidential briefing to officials on this sensitive issue, thus successfully managing to ease the tensions and move forward smoothly with the proceedings.

When nominated for the Emerging Leaders Program of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Julien had the chance to analyze global issues with his peers and meet with thought leaders, foreign officials, and policymakers.

Earned her elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: Oct. 2019

Arbinder’s career in international trade began when she started working with a logistics company in India to fulfill the 1-year work experience requirement for her undergraduate degree. What began as a chance job soon turned into her preferred career choice.

It was this very first role that offered her an unmatched experience to explore all sectors, industries, markets and cultures.

“This was globalization at its best. I’ve been a learner all along and my job became my passion.”

Within a few years, her career trajectory was taking off as she found herself taking on positions of authority at just 23 years of age. It was then that she decided to pursue an Aviation MBA from Concordia University. She applied for and was awarded the women’s scholarship, and this brought her to Montreal in 1997.

A career journey enriched by some amazing experiences

Among Arbinder’s most memorable career experiences was a “meet-n-click” with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a round-table discussion with women executives, which she facilitated. She was impressed by his ideas on women’s empowerment and found it heartening to see a country being led by a leader who was so open and inclusive in his views.

Her other favorite experiences include a 3-week trip around the world to meet and interview key travel and tourism players in 9 countries on 4 continents as part of a research project for the International Air Transport Association, meeting with Universal Studios officials during a ride at their Orlando Park, and participating in the Canadian Aviation delegation to discuss strategies with Indian Government officials.

Adding to her list of cherished experiences was flying across the Atlantic in the cockpit and viewing the Northern Lights up close and personal, and the time she flew a full-flight simulator over the Himalayas to get a birds eye-view before her trek to the base camp of Mt Everest.

Identified opportunities for Canadian companies to build successful partnerships

Among Arbinder’s proudest accomplishments is the trade mission she organized as Trade Commissioner (Innovation) to help Canadian companies find partners for Smart Cities projects in India. The end result was a 1-week curated exploratory program for these companies which resulted in several successful partnerships.

She offers a piece of advice that’s helped her achieve success to those getting started in international business:

“Network, network, network! Succeeding in business is all about making connections.”

Gaining the skills and certification of a leader in her field career growth

Arbinder then decided it was time to take the next logical step to furthering her professional expertise by signing up for FITTskills courses in international trade.

“Taking each FITTskills course was like building blocks. It kept adding on to my current skill and knowledge level. The linkages between the topics in different courses helped as an auto-revision.”

“I particularly enjoyed the International Market Entry Strategies course as the topics focused on strategies, alliances and research.”

Arbinder emphatically states that she would “definitely, absolutely, most certainly” recommend FITTskills courses to other professionals working in international business.

After completing her FITT Diploma in International Trade, Arbinder felt she needed to back her qualifications by earning an industry-recognized designation that would prove her competence as a global trade practitioner.

She soon applied for and was awarded the CITP®|FIBP® designation and is proud to be associated with the “Stamp of Excellence that this designation bears.”

“Just like Neil Armstrong felt and quoted, I was elated, ecstatic and extremely pleased that I was successful.’’

Arbinder is currently working as Trade Commissioner – ICT and investment at Global Affairs Canada, a role she has been successfully handling for the last three and a half years.

Her career in international business and trade now spans more than two decades and she has come a long way from her first job as an undergraduate, when she first developed her passion for this profession.

How do you foresee your CITP designation playing a role in your future career?

“The CITP designation not only highlights my commitment to international trade, but also validates my professional competency in this space.”

With her amazing experience spanning two continents, coupled with proven professional expertise and equipped with the elite CITP designation, we can’t wait to hear what Arbinder tackles next.

From over 25 years of training exporters at FITT, we know that finding partners is one of the biggest challenges businesses face when entering new international markets.

We know that for many businesses, particularly SMEs, not knowing how to successfully enter a global market is also the number one reason international growth opportunities are left unexplored.

So, we decided to address this issue in an interactive way. As we do every month, we took to Twitter for a live chat and brought together a panel of market entry experts from across Canada and the world. We asked the experts all about finding the right partners, from researching the best prospects to negotiating the contract.

It’s no secret that starting a business from the ground up comes with an abundance of challenges. Founders must face and overcome challenges in financing, risk mitigation, market entry and recruitment, to name only a few. But global entrepreneurs add to that laundry list of obstacles with cross-border shipping, global supply chain management, international laws and regulations, language and culture differences – I could go on!

Fortunately, there are some brave, ambitious souls out there who face these challenges head-on and boldly stride into the global marketplace. To get a glimpse into the situations global entrepreneurs face and put our fingers on some great solutions, we assembled a panel of experts who have been there, done that, and are helping others successfully enter international waters as global business owners.

As more free trade agreements are reached and come into force, such as the recent ratification of CETA, opportunities are opening up for companies of all sizes to do business in new international markets.

However, at the same time that regions are making history with bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, the threat of protectionism and increased trade barriers is also giving importers and exporters pause in some markets.

This brought us to a natural question – how can businesses overcome trade barriers of all kinds in markets with potential (and should they)?

To explore this complicated topic, we asked the experts who are directly involved in trade policy, helping businesses overcome barriers to trade in new markets, and those who have “been there – done that” in this month’s #TradeElite Twitter chat.
