In recent years, business and career mentorship has become a hot topic. Countless best-selling books have been written about it, such as Tribe of Mentors and Trillion-Dollar Coach, while employees, entrepreneurs, SMEs, and large corporations have increasingly employed mentorship programs to grow the success of their teams and companies.

So, why all the fuss about mentorship?

To start, there are compelling stats that prove mentorship provides more than internal value to mentees: it generates increases in the revenue, performance, and success of individuals and their businesses or business endeavors. Famous entrepreneurs like Bill Gates (mentored by Warren Buffett) and Sheryl Sandberg (mentored by Arianna Huffington) all hail their mentors who helped them achieve success and avoid costly mistakes in their careers.

Mentorship is valuable, both intrinsically and financially. Expertise, guidance, experience, and advice all work together to give you a leg up on your business and career goals.

Someone who has already walked your path can give you the most efficient and results-driven strategies to employ—ensuring that you don’t have to create or execute these steps alone. More importantly, it’s an investment in yourself that will last a lifetime.

Curious about what makes mentorship so valuable? Check out our compelling stats below:

Considering the great value of mentorship, it’s no surprise that FITT recently launched the FITT Global Mentorship Pilot Program. There are many successful Certified International Trade Professionals (CITP®|FIBP®) who are entrepreneurs, business leaders, and international trade experts, and we wanted to ensure they could share their wisdom and experience with eager students, entrepreneurs, employees, SMEs, and like-minded individuals who need expert guidance and support with their business or careers.

The FREE six-month virtual mentorship is open from now until May 14th. We’ll then select and publicly announce our five initial mentees who will begin their mentorship with their designated CITP mentors from June 1 – November 30, 2021.

Mentorship can be a gamechanger on many levels. While it may be known that mentorship can be transformative and can often be the key to success, what seems less clear is where to actually find one.

As an organization that is dedicated to contributing to professional and personal development, it seemed only natural for The Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) to offer a mentorship experience. In 2018, to mark the 20th anniversary of the CITP®|FIBP® designation, FITT launched a special global trade mentorship contest.

Where better to find mentors in global business than amongst the CITP’s, the Certified International Trade Professionals, who bring with them years of wisdom and experience across a wide range of industries in global trade.

FITT hand-picked 3 CITP global trade mentors to offer a bespoke and personal mentorship to a matched mentee. From over 100 entrants to the contest, 3 lucky winners were drawn in 2018. The mentors and mentees would have a full year to complete the engagement.

A uniquely global mentorship experience

The mentees and mentors were carefully matched, to align on important points like professions or industries. Once matched, they were free to work out between themselves how they would roll out their mentorship engagement. True to the spirit of global business, it was a multinational affair – in many cases, mentor and mentee physically separated by countries, continents and time zones.

But it’s a small world after all. As it turns out, no matter what business or profession in which you may find yourself, people are people and the value of mentorship has universal appeal.

The mentors and mentees of the CITP20 Mentorship program shared some of their experiences and lessons learned.

Lesson: mentorship delivers usable strategies for professional and personal development

Mentor: Simon Slyper, CITP

Simon Slyper, CITP|FIBP is a Senior Customs Compliance Specialist with Amscan Inc. Simon works with numerous internal and external teams such as logistics, customs brokers, product managers and sales to ensure that the importation and exportation of company products are compliant with U.S. customs regulations.

Mentee: Natalia Giraldo

Natalia is a professional in the field of Energy Regulation.

Simon, the mentor

How did you find your experience? Was it helpful and why/why not?

I found my experience to be a very positive and rewarding one. I enjoyed having the opportunity to draw on my professional and life experiences to provide Natalia with an insight into how to develop her professional goals.

Did you get a chance to have meaningful conversations?

Yes, the time was sufficient for the objectives we discussed. We created a set of discussion points in our first session which evolved as we progressed through our calls. Our conversations were especially meaningful in that we took the time to listen and question one another. Great communication and the exchange of ideas made our time together a fruitful one.

Do you feel that you contributed some value to your mentee?

Based on our conversations and Natalia’s feedback, I feel that our time together was a constructive and beneficial one. We discussed my experience with FITT skills courses and how that could benefit her, public and private sector work, social media and networking strategies and the importance of patience and vision in achieving medium- and long-term goals. Some points that I stressed were: Patience, Time, Action Items, Awareness, Education, Discipline, Sacrifice, Perseverance, Imagination & Visualizing your goals and path.

It was important to listen to Natalia and understand her interests and how they fit into our sessions. Natalia has a very outward and global vision on where she sees herself professionally, and I have no doubt she’ll accomplish everything she sets out to do.

Would you participate in a mentorship opportunity again? If so, is there something that would make it more valuable for you? Would you recommend it to others?

Definitely. It was a very rewarding and satisfying experience as it allowed me to share and provide my experiences to someone looking for a different perspective. I not only had the pleasure to learn about Natalia, but the discussions also allowed for self-reflection in my career and long-term goals.

Natalia, the mentee

How did you find your experience? Was it helpful and why/why not?

It was very helpful. My main goal with the mentorship program was to learn from professionals in international business – what they do, how they got to where they are right now, strategies for professional development.

Was it a good match?

Simon was a perfect match. He is involved in regulatory compliance, which is similar to what I currently do. In addition, the discussions were very dynamic, he was very open to discussing my questions and his experience, and understanding what I was hoping to achieve.

Did you get a chance to have meaningful conversations?

Yes, the time was enough for the goals of the discussion. We had a list of general topics to discuss at the outset, which evolved as we had the various calls. We also wrapped up with a summary of the discussions, which helped us stay focused and ensure we explored a variety of topics.

Did you get some help or insights with solving a business problem or with achieving a career or personal development goal?

The biggest help was learning strategies for professional and personal development and types of careers in international business. How to get where I want to go, how to connect with people, how to build on my current experience, things I may be overlooking, new skills to gain, things to continue doing/stop doing. Learning about Simon’s career path provided a lot of insights.

Would you participate in a mentorship opportunity again? If so, is there something that would make it more valuable for you?

Absolutely. Having the opportunity to speak with a professional in the field can be very enlightening. I think this is a great way of learning from others, building one’s professional network, and learning about careers and opportunities.

Would you recommend mentorship to others?

Yes. I would further recommend that as part of the tips provided at the outset of the mentorship program, also include guidance in terms of the sort of topics/areas that can be discussed and other suggestions to make the best of the opportunity.

Lesson: get a mentor and be a mentor to get the most out of mentorship

Mentor: Bob Greaves, CITP

Bob Greaves, CITP, is the Director of Land Management at Civeo Corporation. Bob is a technology and process professional with more than 25 years of Business Development Leadership experience serving the North American and International energy marketplace.

Mentee: Bruno Hernandes Gomes

Bruno Hernandes Gomes is Project Coordinator at Enactus Centennial College, and is intellectually curious and passionate about business development.

Bob, the mentor

How did you find your experience? Was it valuable and why/why not?

I found speaking with Bruno to be rewarding. He and his wife have made a major commitment to move to Canada and I was honoured to have the opportunity to speak with him and to share thoughts as to his ideas on what he’d like to explore next in his career.

Did you get a chance to have meaningful conversations?

Because we are located in different cities and time zones, we never had the opportunity to meet in person. Bruno was very flexible in arranging discussion times, however, and we managed to coordinate calendars so as to have regular discussions.

Do you feel that you contributed some value to your mentee?

It is my hope that Bruno found some value in speaking with me. I look forward to remaining in contact with Bruno, understanding what he intends to focus upon and assisting in any way possible in the future.

Would you participate in a mentorship opportunity again? If so, is there something that would make it more valuable for you?

I would gladly participate again. Don’t know if local mentorship works more effectively than a long distance effort. I admit that I experienced frustration not being able to introduce Bruno to my network here in Western Canada in order to assist his explorations and broaden the support that I might be able to provide for he and his wife.

Would you recommend mentorship to others?

Wholeheartedly. As a person who has both benefitted (and continues to do so) from being mentored as well as being happy to support others as a mentor, I find the experience to be both rewarding and fulfilling. Thank you for the opportunity to participate.

Bruno, the mentee

How did you find your experience? Was it helpful and why/why not?

I believe the experience was extremely good, mainly to open up my mind on how to match my skills, past experiences and education with the Canadian market and the degree I am currently acquiring. It was definitely valuable and I am glad to know that Bob, just like me, is looking forward to remaining in touch, because if there was a way the experience could be enhanced it was due to my busy agenda juggling studies, volunteer, and part-time work. I am sure I will take extra advantage from this experience and Bob’s valuable insights once I graduate next April and truly start my transition.

Was it a good match?

I believe so and it is hard not to be when in touch with someone with the experience, network and the open mind that Bob has.

Did you get a chance to have meaningful conversations?

Yes, we did. Like I mentioned before, if it could be better it would be from my end, due to my agenda. Bob was always promptly available and rapidly answering my e-mails when I reached out.

Did you get some help or insights with solving a business problem or with achieving career or personal development goal?

Yes. We didn’t get to the point of discussing many businesses problems but Bob presented alternatives to achieve my career goals that I had not thought or considered before, pointing out some unique aspects of my education – such as Portuguese fluency, food engineering, etc, that I had thought I would never use again in life.

I want to work with business development/analysis with a focus on international relations/trade.

Just adding to that, as Bob already pointed out to me, it is more likely that I will start solving problems in the domestic environment, learning and proving my value to work my way up to the foreign environment.

Regarding industry, I have experience in the food and fashion industry, and I am primarily looking for an opportunity in the former.

However, it is important to point out that I am highly intellectually curious and I find many other industries interesting as well. That is what attracts me in business development/analysis, the specialization is important to get a competitive advantage but from an entry-level point of view, skills such as critical and analytical thinking can be as important as previous experience in a specific industry.

Did you achieve a milestone or a significant turning point?

I know I will because the time is coming to use Bob’s insights.

Would you participate in a mentorship opportunity again? If so, is there something that would make it more valuable for you?

I definitely would but with more dedicated time exclusively to take the maximum out of the opportunity.

Would you recommend mentorship to others?

Yes, and the closer to graduation the better I would say.

The value of mentorship is complex

The value of mentorship can be measured in many ways, and not just in top-line results, promotions or raises. When it works, it can be a mutually beneficial arrangement that can improve performance, enhance effectiveness and bring about transformational results on both a personal and a professional level.

Do you ever look at successful people in your profession and wonder how they got there? Do you wish to be like them? Everyone has that one person who they look up to and wish that they could emulate their success. But where to start? That’s where career mentorship comes in. In this article, we’ll be looking at the three ways you could benefit from career mentorship.

Who is a career mentor and where can you find one?

A career mentor is a person who is able and willing to help you as you work on your career goals, challenges, and fears.

Where can you find one? It could be a senior professional in your office, a peer who has managed to get their career life together, someone working elsewhere who has excelled in your profession, a connection from an industry or networking event, or even a life coach.

How do you ask someone to mentor you?

The most straightforward way would be to identify a potential mentor and reach out to them. Send them an email, call, or visit them at their workplace and tell them how much you admire their career and how much you would appreciate having them mentor you. You may be surprised at how interested people are at helping others who openly declare their admiration towards them.

The bottom line: your mentor needs to be someone who has gone through the very steps you are going through today. Find them and request their assistance.

Can you have multiple career mentors at a go? Of course, you can. To become the best, you will need all the help that you can get. And again, most successful people are busy people who may not afford to be there every time you need mentoring. Having multiple mentors means that when one is too busy to talk, someone else is available.

Do mentors need any form of training?

Mentoring others requires experience and dedication, so it is always better if a mentor has training on how to coach people professionally. That way, they are able to understand the mentee not only from a career perspective, but also from a personal angle. There are companies that provide life coaching training for people who want to help others create profound change in themselves, their work and their lives. At the end of the training, the trainees are better equipped to mentor other people and to equally benefit from that mentorship.

What are the benefits of career mentorship?

You don’t know how much you need mentorship until you start getting some. Some of the benefits include:

1. Job recommendations

The disadvantage of being a junior employee in any organization is that you rarely get the time to look for better-paying jobs. Sometimes you are forced to wait for your promotion for years. Even when it comes, it sometimes fails to propel you as high as you would have wanted it to. This often leads to frustrations.

Talking about it with your mentor, however, presents a chance for you to get those frustrations off your chest. The mentor understands your frustrations and could help you with your resume or job search, introduce you to potential employers or provide other valuable advice.

2. Source of encouragement

The encouragement you get from your family and friends is good, but the advice you get from someone who has experienced the same problems as you can be especially helpful.

If you’re having problems with your boss, your mentor understands what that feels like and can offer advice on how to handle the issue. If you are thinking of going back to school, your mentor can offer feedback based on their own experience or from examples of their past or current colleagues. If your colleagues are stressing you out, your mentor too has been there and has viable tips for you to manage your stress levels and find ways to reduce the stress involved in your work relationships. When you feel like quitting, your mentor understands your reasons and encourages you accordingly.

3. Mentors educate you

No matter how good you are at your job, you will always need someone to give you checks and balances.

When you are given a tough assignment at work and need some external input, your mentor is your number one source. When you are doing well at work and walking at the top of the world, your mentor will be there to remind you of how dangerous pride can be to your career. They understand both situations too well and that’s invaluable to your career.

They can also help you build your skills, recommend what areas of your career are most important to develop, and help you find the right training to continue to improve.

What’s your role as a mentee?

As a rule of thumb, mentorship is a give and take kind of interaction. You benefit from it, but you should also help your mentors to climb their career ladders. They too could use a little input from you. They may not ask for your advice but sharing it could help them and won’t cost you a thing.

While you’re at it, consider finding a mentee of your own and nurture them. It is within this mentoring loop, mentor to mentee and back again, where you will learn the most to propel your career forward.

The value of mentorship could apply to anyone. Students, employees, and even executives are obvious examples. Executive coaching is a thing for a reason. But when you think about it, how else do we learn but from others?

Mentors help us to learn and grow, both professionally and personally. When it comes to business, the value of mentorship can be astoundingly pivotal.

According to entrepreneur and advisor Doña Storey, “when you ask accomplished business owners how they achieved success, many will say they had a mentor who helped guide them throughout their business journey….

while research and trial and error can help you learn, nothing replaces the guidance of someone who has been there before.

Growing a business is challenging

For entrepreneurs and self-employed people running their own businesses, the many challenges cut across a wide spectrum, from finance to legal issues, IP protection, managing employees, suppliers and inventory, through to sales, marketing and business development. For small businesses and newer entrepreneurs, there are special challenges that can present themselves.

Women entrepreneurs also face their own unique hurdles in launching or growing a business. The numbers tell the story:

Approximately 16% of small and medium-sized enterprises are majority women-owned

Only 10% of high-growth firms are owned by women

About 8% of women-owned businesses export

The rate of entrepreneurial failure is almost legendary. More than 50% of startups fail within the first 5 years of their launch. For all sorts of reasons, the odds of success are much higher when an entrepreneur has access to a mentor.

Entrepreneurs aside, what about the rest of us? It is said that a good mentor challenges and inspires you, in addition to supporting you in your quest to do better and achieve more. Health journalist Joelle Kleina adds that “having a mentor in your life can make a big difference to your success and happiness. Study after study has found that professionals who have had mentors experience higher salaries and greater job satisfaction; one study of Sun Microsystems employees found that mentored employees were five times more likely to be promoted than their non-mentored peers.”

Where are the mentors?

Given the challenges, it’s safe to say that in the world of business, it’s widely accepted that a mentor can be an invaluable resource. And yet, according to Harvard Business School professor Thomas Delong and his colleagues, “everyone we spoke with over age 40 could name a mentor in his or her professional life, but younger people often could not.'”

The business landscape has changed profoundly in the last few decades, significantly impacting the way we can expect to find guidance and career advice. According to Priscilla Claman, a career coaching expert, “Middle-and senior-level managers are no longer the ones with stable jobs. With changes in direction, restructuring, downsizing, acquisitions, mergers and, of course, recessions, your mentor is just as likely to move on or be laid off as you are.”

We need to change our thinking about what a mentor should look like, according to Dorie Clark, accepting that the “beneficent, all-knowing senior professionals — are in short supply these days.”

Mentorship is changing

A new model, a kind of mentorship by community, has surfaced in place of the way things used to be. Think of it as a kind of personal board of directors, a group of people you consult regularly. Rather than relying on one trusted advisor, why not benefit from the feedback and guidance of many – colleagues, peers, a counterpart, a superior, your boss, or even consultants. Consider the value of getting feedback from multiple viewpoints and perspectives.

So, what can we expect from a mentor exactly? Futurpreneur Canada breaks it down:

The role of a mentor is to:

Help build your self-reliance and leadership skills

Help you discover your own insights, abilities and solutions as you start and grow your business

Support your self-directed learning and help you come to your own conclusions and decisions

Listen to your ideas and answer your questions truthfully

Give emotional support while also challenging you

Provide real world business advice when requested/appropriate

Celebrate milestones and successes

How do I find a mentor?

According to Futurpreneur Canada, many mentorship programs and opportunities exist across Canada for entrepreneurs, both for one-on-one mentorship and mentoring advisory boards. Their Futurpreneur Canada Start-Up Program individually matches entrepreneurs to ideal mentor candidates based on skills and personalities.

Regardless of where you look, the key is to find a mentor who suits your needs and personality. The best match is made when a mentor complements your own skills, experience and needs.

7 expert tips for mentees to get the most out of your mentor:

Be prepared for change. “Mentoring can have a profound impact on your personal growth, but you have to be open to change.” — Lois Zachary, EdD, author of a number of books on mentoring including The Mentee’s Guide: Making Mentoring Work for You.

Trust your mentor. “Not only open your mind, but open your heart to the other.” — Rabbi Victor Gross, co-director of the ALEPH Sage-ing Mentorship, a spiritual mentoring program in Boulder, Colo.

Be an active listener. “Always make sure you understand what your mentor is saying or asking. If not, don’t be afraid to ask questions.” — Rabbi Victor Gross

Be authentic. “Unless the mentee is real, the mentor ends up mentoring an imposter and it’s a waste of time for both.” — Lois Zachary, EdD

Be committed. “If your mentor is willing to make the commitment, you need to honor her time and willingness to work with you.” — Liz Katkin, former partner at an international law firm and mentor for new associates.

Challenge yourself. “If you stay in your comfort zone, that’s where you’ll always be. You need to stretch yourself. Take risks.” — Rabbi Victor Gross

Don’t expect to be promoted; expect to be promotable. “It’s not about immediate achievement. It’s about developing your future potential.” — Lois Zachary, EdD

Consider mentoring someone

Giving your time as a mentor can not only make a difference in another person’s life but it can change your own as well. It can benefit your career by motivating you to stay at the top of your game and to pursue your own growth and professional development.

The following tips can help you to do your part to develop a mutually satisfying and beneficial relationship:

Be willing to commit – don’t take it lightly and be honest with yourself about how much time you have to give

Ensure it’s the right fit – focus on the goals and learning objectives of the mentee rather than your own agenda

Listen and ask good questions – focus on the mentee’s needs instead what you think is right for them

Meet regularly – mentoring works best on a regular basis

Challenge mentees to take risks and step out of their comfort zone – learning and achieving new things requires confronting our growing edges

Provide constructive and honest feedback

Set a good example – be conscious that you’re a role model

He is also an entrepreneur himself, as founder and CEO of BizZen, an online marketplace and resource helping small businesses looking to sell their companies to find buyers. BizZen is set to launch internationally in the upcoming year.

Chris has a passion for financial markets, business development, lifestyle design, education and social capital. He has over 18 years of experience in the private sector in various key business roles, including investor relations, business development, public relations and finance.

He channels his dedication and experience into helping others develop their businesses, careers and goals for the future.

A truly international education

After completing a Bachelor of Commerce with honours at Laurentian University in 2002, Chris decided to make a bold move.

My motivation was to learn as much as I could about other countries and cultures, as I believed it would set me apart from many other students in Canada. I also love to travel and this was a way for me to see the world.

Looking for opportunities to complement his degree with specialized education, and developing growing interest in travel, he decided to pursue a Masters of International Business at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea.

“My international trade career started when I was in my twenties and I moved to study my Masters in International Business at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. It was my first out-of-country experience, which was the spark to my passion for international activities.”

During his time in South Korea, he took on a role as a government official for the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, the largest province in South Korea, a role seldom given to foreign-born individuals.

Making a name for himself in Korea

The position was a high-profile one. Chris was responsible for developing foreign direct investment, marketing and promotions, foreign investment relations, PR, and advertising.

He also created the Chamber of Commerce/Embassy network for the province’s Investment Division, organized North American and European investment tours, and provided counsel to senior officials.

During his time with the Gyeonggi government, he also made many trade investment tours, satisfying his love of traveling and meeting people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

In 2004, Chris moved to a new role as International Public Relations Manager with the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group. One of his favourite projects was launching the new Kia Sportage vehicle with a sensational publicity campaign.

“We launched the new Kia Sportage at a distributors’ conference during which I introduced the vehicle. We also created a publicity campaign to garner attention to the launch. It was challenging working with other employees whose first language was not the same as my own.”

The cultural aspects of working in South Korea were challenging, but rewarding when overcome.

Chris moved to an Investor Relations Manager position with LG Philips LCD in 2005, where he implemented external financial communications with the investment community, enhancing the reputation of LG through analyst meetings, conferences and road shows. He is proud to have been part of the $1.4 billion follow-on equity offering of the company.

He looks back very fondly on his formative years in South Korea, where he was given such great responsibility at the beginning of his international trade career, and helped to found the Yonsei Severance Annual Marathon, one of South Korea’s most successful charity events at the time.

He learned a great deal about business, not only from his education and professional experiences, but from the people as well.

“I still love kimchi and dokpoki, largely because of a wonderful street vendor who took me under her wing. Whenever I walked by she would feed me and try to teach me a bit about South Korea and her language. She was an amazing person, full of energy and enthusiasm.”

In business, I learned that professionalism, the ability to build trust and a smile can get you far.

When insight leads to inspiration

Chris moved back to Canada in 2006, where he served as Vice President of Western Canada at Christensen Investor Relations, before moving to Canetic Resources Trust as Senior Investor Relations Advisor in 2007.

He made the move from Calgary to Ottawa to be closer to friends and family, where he became a Wealth Advisor for ScotiaMcLeod from 2010 to January 2015, specializing in business succession planning for professionals and business owners moving on with their careers or retiring.

This position sparked an interest and inspiration for a new service that would help people overcome obstacles in a very specific niche. Chris started developing BizZen to fill that niche.

“While I was a wealth advisor, many of my clients were business owners and many of them wanted to retire but did not know where to start the process. I helped my clients as their quarterback throughout the process and found that the service was lacking in the small business sector in regards to support for transitioning out of a business. Also, I just really enjoy helping others succeed.”

Leadership was in his bones

Chris recently began teaching FITT’s Global Business Environment course, as well as several other international business courses, at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario. He says teaching was a natural next step for him, and a great way to pass on his wealth of international experience. It also runs in his family.

“My passion for teaching comes from a father and grandmother whom were teachers. I find teaching to be one of the noblest professions.”

Applying for his CITP®|FIBP® designation was a way of further proving his global trade expertise in a leadership role.

“I was awarded the designation through the Executive Path. However, I believe teaching some of the FITT-accredited courses has enhanced my knowledge, and it has been an honour to help others achieve the designation.”

Chris says the role has a real significance for him as a knowledgeable, experienced professional, and one in a position to pass that knowledge on to others.

“I am very proud to receive the designation. It is an award for all the effort and work I have done internationally.”

It sets me apart from others and also signifies that expertise that is so important in this day and age. I look forward to being an active part of the FITT and CITP community.

He has also taken a very active role during his short time at Algonquin College, participating in the mentorship program.

“The program plays matchmaker and introduces mentors to startup student entrepreneurs. Mentors are expected to be available one hour a month to support their entrepreneur and provide accountability, as well as next steps.”

“In addition, I am the curator for TedxAlgonquincollege, lead in a mentoring program for entrepreneurs at the College and part of the Algonquin College experts program.”

We look forward to hearing more about Chris’s many exciting projects in mentorship, entrepreneurship and education in the years to come.
