International Women’s Day is here again, and this year’s theme is “Break The Bias”. We are encouraged to imagine a gender-equal world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. Every year when this day comes around, FITT posts articles on female leadership, overcoming cultural obstacles, and the many challenges women and non-binary individuals face in international business. We do this because, though progress is being made every day, women in global trade roles face bias and discrimination as part of their jobs. So, how can we create real change and finally #BreakTheBias?

We asked three global business experts, currently sharing their expertise and inspiration as mentors with the EDC x SheEO Go Global Activator Cohort program to tell us about their experiences and thoughts on breaking the biases in international business.

Gabriela Sartori, CITP, Purchasing Director—Whyte’s Foods Inc.

With over a decade of experience in global trade, particularly in the agri-food sector, Gabriela has a unique perspective on how to be successful working with people of varying cultures in Africa and South America.

Leah Perry, CITP, Manager, Cleantech, Venture Services—MaRS Discovery District

After almost seven years of helping businesses expand internationally with Export Development Canada, Leah now works at MaRS Discovery District, connecting cleantech ventures to the capital community, enabling their success internationally.

Fanny Bousquet, CITP, First Secretary—Science, Technology, and Innovation, Global Affairs Canada

Fanny has been working with Global Affairs Canada for over 10 years as a diplomat fostering relationships with countries all over the world, most recently working to build partnerships between Canada and the Netherlands in the field of science, technology, and innovation.

This year’s IWD theme is “Breaking the Bias”. What does that mean to you as a woman in global business?

Gabriela Sartori CITP

Breaking the bias in a global business perspective starts from looking at the world—the different cultures and people with new eyes, like using new glasses. The glasses of acceptance, interest, admiration, willingness to discover, to taste, to learn, and mostly the interest to share.

Sometimes we just need to take the risk, change ourselves, control our fears and detect our own biases.

I have traveled the world looking for amazing fruits and vegetables, sometimes visiting family farms located in small communities. From South America to Africa, on all those journeys I have discovered amazing people with the same goal—to live happily and provide for their families.

Nevertheless, biases are present due to different cultures, where women’s and men’s roles are very distinct. By respecting the culture, adapting, and at the same time leading change, and sharing knowledge, we can promote that minorities can live better lives.

Leah Perry, CITP

Being in the room, representing your true authentic self. Breaking the bias means that not only do I have a place in the room, but I am comfortable (and encouraged) to speak up when I have a good idea and feel truly valued for my contribution.

Fanny Bousquet, CITP

It’s important to showcase that there isn’t one type of ‘businesswoman’. I sometimes feel like if women want to be taken seriously, they have to dress up in a certain manner and do more to impress than what is normally expected from their male counterparts. It’s time to show the full diversity of the businesswomen community!

From your perspective, what do you think are the biggest challenges facing women or non-binary people in international business?

Gabriela Sartori, CITP

The challenge is still not always being taken seriously. Women and non-binary people need to demonstrate their value first, work harder, and show outstanding professionalism.

Leah Perry, CITP

Different cultures all have very different views on how they believe women should act and their roles, especially in business. I once had a colleague who was asked to speak to a wall as she was advised she couldn’t look at a man in the business meeting.

Gaining respect and being treated like an equal as you conduct business in other cultures is a significant challenge women and non-binary people face in international business.

Fanny Bousquet, CITP

Women and non-binary individuals have to put in more effort to be taken seriously. I remember being one of the few women at a conference on hydrogen in Germany, and I had the impression that everyone was staring at me. You have to develop extra confidence I think, and really believe in yourself because people may be judging you faster.

What do you attribute your career success to? What advice would you give to women who want to advance their careers on the global stage?

Gabriela Sartori, CITP

I think my success is mostly due to being comfortable in my own skin. I know myself and have actually lost the fear of failure.

Life has highs and lows and I have enjoyed my journey. I worked as a veterinary doctor in Uruguay for 10 years and when I moved here to Canada back in 2006, I wasn’t able to practice. But instead of suffering from losing my career, I decided to look for a new passion.

My new path led me to trade in agricultural products. I am outgoing and love people. This career enabled me to discover different cultures and continue using my background in agricultural products, which I am passionate about.

My advice is very simple: trust yourself, study, work hard, and be open minded. Go the extra mile always.

Leah Perry, CITP

Don’t follow the herd. Take time to listen to podcasts, speak to people in different industries that are of interest to you, reflect on the impact you want to make in your career.

Don’t just take the next promotion or next job because it’s what others in your position have done before, if it doesn’t align with your goals.

Fanny Bousquet, CITP

I was lucky to have good managers and good mentors. I think it helps to develop a wide network of other women or non-binary entrepreneurs and see how they do it and what is their best advice.

I also joined a female-only paddling team when I was in Canada and that has been a great support group in general (and still is).

How can we support women in business around the world?

Gabriela Sartori, CITP

Canadian companies can and should lead. We have the privilege to live in a diverse and great country.

Each time we buy or sell we chose with whom we do business. When asking for social compliance and safety certifications, auditing, verifying training, asking for corrective actions, or just doing our due diligence, we can change other women’s health and lives.

Supporting women with whom we interact and helping them grow in their careers, we contribute to a better world, as these women also often carry the task of educating the next generation that will build the future.

Leah Perry, CITP

There is a reason Brené Brown is so popular with her talks on vulnerability. Sharing your experience about the time you didn’t have it all figured out, the time you were scared to speak up but did it anyway, the time you had no idea how to start the business but now have a successful venture, will not only inspire other women in business but will make them realize that they are not alone and can reach their dreams as well.

Fanny Bousquet, CITP

Governments definitely have a role to play. Many are already talking about initiatives to help women doing business. For example, Global Affairs Canada has a team dedicated to Business Women in International Trade and is putting special emphasis on inclusive trade. Canada also launched a Feminist International Assistance Policy in 2017, and in that context, can use innovative ways for its official development aid to promote gender equality and women empowerment.

This week we’re celebrating International Women’s Day and trail-blazing women in business. FITT is proud to provide business training for the next generation of female leaders.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme was #ChooseToChallenge, a mantra that suggests a “challenged world is an alert world,” according to the official website. The words are apt, considering that this past year has created immense challenges for women in the workforce as a result of COVID-19.

A report by McKinsey & Company found that over the course of the pandemic women have been more likely to have been laid off or furloughed while mothers have had the brunt of parenting responsibilities while working through mass childcare closures.

Unsurprisingly, this has led to an increase in many females stepping away from their career advancements, either temporarily or permanently, setting back the progress that they and the broader collective of women have made in the past years.

The pandemic was also top of mind for UNWomen.org, whose theme for International Women’s Day was “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.” Their focus for 2021 was on “the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight[ing] the gaps that remain.”

Clearly, especially now, there is still much work to be done for women and the fight for equality, but there is also much to celebrate as progress is slowly blooming from tackling these issues. During the pandemic, for example, many governments around the world created funding, resources, grants, loans and initiatives to support female entrepreneurs with business recovery. The general public also saw the clear gains that all citizens make when women are supported, empowered and in positions of leadership—as was the case with New Zealand’s COVID-19 recovery efforts led by their female Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern.

In fact, UNWomen.org reports that women-led countries have collectively fared better with their pandemic responses than male-run countries overall. These types of milestones are great cause for celebration.

Bearing this information in mind, we’ve got a few more stats about female leadership and women in business to keep you inspired for the road ahead. Here they are:

1. 41% of active Certified International Trade Professionals (CITP®|FIBP®) are women.

2. Prior to the pandemic, being a leader was an attainable professional goal for a majority of women, according to a study by KPMG. Specifically, in their report, they found that “six in 10 women (64%) aspired to be a senior leader of a company or organization in the future, and more than half (56%) of women aspired to be on the board of a company or organization.”

3. In the same study, they found that women who were encouraged to be leaders were more likely to become senior leaders than those who were not (26% vs. 15%).

4. 67% of women in the KPMG research also said they had learned the most important lessons about leadership from other women.

5. 82% percent of professional working women in the same study believed that access to and networking with female leaders would help them advance in their career.

6. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, “as of 2015, 35% of Canadian women had a university certificate or degree, compared to 30% of men.”

7. The same foundation also found that “women and men also tend to have nearly equivalent job tenure. In a national study, both women and men report having worked for their current employer for an average of just under eight years.”

8. According to the International Women’s Day website, “Over 87% of companies are highly committed to gender equality—a huge increase from 56% in 2012. A commitment to equality often comes from senior leaders, management and male employees.”

9. According to The International Labor Organization, in Jordan, Saint Lucia, Botswana, Honduras and the Philippines, females are more likely to be bosses than men. Jordan, specifically, found that 62 percent of their managerial positions were filled by women.

10. A report by McKinsey & Company found that, at the start of 2020, representation for women in corporate America was trending upward, particularly with senior management positions: “between January 2015 and January 2020, representation of women in senior-vice-president positions grew from 23 to 28 percent, and representation in the C-suite grew from 17 to 21 percent.”

Earned her elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: Dec. 2020

This week we’re celebrating amazing women in business who inspire, achieve and blaze trails for generations to come. Megha Kandoi is a shining example of female leadership in international trade and we are proud to highlight and celebrate her accomplishments!

A love for travel and different cultures were the triggers that pushed Megha Kandoi to move out of her comfort zone and discover the myriad of possibilities that the world had to offer. The fact that she hailed from a business-oriented family made international business a naturally desirable career option for her. She realized early on that it was essential to stay current with the latest advances in the industry and economic environment to ensure business survival, market share gains and profitability in the long run.

The opportunities seemed limitless and Megha soon commenced her journey toward her career goals by completing a bachelor’s degree in Finance and International Business from Christ University, India. This led to her first role as Import-Export Coordinator where she was tasked with facilitating operations and shipping transactions between countries. The role helped Megha develop an understanding of contractual agreements and trade laws across the world. She then decided to upgrade her qualifications a notch higher by completing her post-graduation in International Business Management.

“In my perspective, cross-cultural leadership and management skills are vital for thriving in an ever-changing global business environment.”

A career journey that transformed her into a confident woman

The opportunity to leverage her knowledge and skills across industries ranging from manufacturing and food & beverage to healthcare and technology across various countries in such a short span of time helped Megha gain valuable experience and unique life skills.

“Interacting with people from all walks of life and the ability to build strong interpersonal relationships with them is always a cherished experience. Looking back on my career journey makes me reminiscence how drastically I have evolved and grown into a confident woman.”

Getting published in a reputed journal

Megha has been deeply involved in research investigation in the arena of international marketing since her university years. The topic that piqued her interest was “the adaptation of products and services in an international market and co-creation as a method of building brand innovation and customer engagement.”

Having her work published in Scopus Indexed Journal of Management was not only a huge honour for Megha, but it also gave her the exposure to participate and present her work at various international conferences and seminars.

The Path to Success

“What we learn becomes a part of who we are and eventually leads us to success.”

Although it is easy to get swayed by the temptation to seek jobs in big, multinational companies, Megha believes that no opportunity that comes your way is any less important. There can be a tremendous learning curve and a huge scope to hone your managerial skills, even while working in an agile start-up environment.

Making the most of each opportunity, regardless of how big or small, prepares us to constantly re-invent and adapt ourselves to cope in the highly volatile business scenario.

“It’s necessary to be persistent and willing to take risks and to work hard to reach your aspirations.”

Business training that gave real-world insights into doing business globally

Megha took FITTskills courses through Sheridan College and earned the FITT Diploma in International Trade upon completion of the institution’s accredited program and after transferring her credits.

“My favourite FITTskills course was ‘Feasibility of International Trade’ as it helped me dive deeper into finding viable market opportunities through effective research analysis. It taught me that it is an absolute must to understand potential risks and related factors while developing optimal strategies to venture into an international market.”

She also enjoyed “International Sales and Marketing” because she loved learning about how companies could adapt their products and services to meet consumer needs while ensuring maximum utility.

Megha had already charted her path to earning the CITP®|FIBP® designation and, therefore, applied for the industry-recognized designation soon after receiving her FITT Diploma.

“Achieving the designation would validate my competence, skills and knowledge amidst the international trade fraternity across the world.”

She earned the esteemed credential in December 2020 and feels proud and ecstatic to be a member of the elite CITP®|FIBP® community. She aspired to earn this benchmark of excellence ever since she first heard of it and the journey to achieving it has been a fruitful and fulfilling one.

“The experience is stupendous and definitely worth investing in. It gives me immense pleasure to see my hard work and dedication pay off.”

Today, as the Enterprise/Software portfolio lead for early-stage startups at MaRS Discovery District, one of the world’s largest urban innovation hubs, Megha supports promising high-impact growth-oriented ventures raise capital, scale their team, and grow revenue globally. She has a strong passion and love for supporting entrepreneurship and is committed to increasing a venture’s odds of success.

Over the years, she has been exposed to a range of emerging technologies and has global experience across industry verticals driving strengths in business strategy, growth hacking, strategic markets & partnerships, new customer acquisitions, and technology; helping startups/small businesses expand globally.

She foresees her CITP®|FIBP® designation as a major asset in advancing her future career goals, as it will open the door to exciting projects and partnerships, giving her a competitive edge in the industry.

“Having only just begun my career in international trade, the designation boosts my confidence and gives me the credibility to conquer new opportunities. The sky is the limit for me and I believe my business alliances and partners will always have a greater peace of mind collaborating with a highly qualified international trade professional.”

We couldn’t agree more—Megha’s energy, talent and fresh perspectives point toward a promising career filled with exciting opportunities, successful outcomes and ever-expanding horizons.

Every year FITT likes to join the myriad of organizations marking International Women’s Day by taking the opportunity to discuss issues unique to women in global business.

What kind of networks are out there that can help a small business? Should I look for a mentor? Do I really need a website or social media to grow my business?

These are just some of the many questions that anyone trying to start or grow a business will face. Growing a business is tough. For good reason, the word ‘entrepreneur’ conjures up visions of long hours, sleepless nights, and risk. Understandably, not everyone may be ready for entrepreneurship.

For women who are starting, growing or running a business, you can add even more challenges to the mix. Access to financial capital, information, support and networks tend to be the primary barriers faced by women entrepreneurs.

Financing your business

When it comes to financing their business, studies show that women entrepreneurs are more likely to face obstacles in receiving traditional funding or venture capital and tend to receive less money.

Finance may be the single most important aspect that will affect the viability of running or growing your business. That’s why small business advisors strongly recommend that you boost your financial literacy. Take a course, do your research, inform yourself, ask for help and know when to call in the experts.

Beyond traditional financing, there are many more options than ever before, such as angel investors or crowdfunding, and new business investment funding models. Do your research and talk to people. Consider all the options that may be open to you.

If you’re planning for growth from going global with your business, consider this advice from global trade bankers:

A strong relationship with your bank and a good solid deal team that understands your business is key when navigating some more complex types of business growth, like going global. Laying the foundation of this relationship as early as possible will only help.

Most experts recommend making connections with your financial institution, and building a relationship, even if you aren’t quite ready to start. It’s so much better to build that relationship early. That way your banker can help you get ready for exporting and all that goes with it. Planning is so important when it comes to going global with your business.

Talk to your banker. They are connected with agencies such as Export Development Canada. Your banker can help you formulate your plan and test for readiness, explore payment options when dealing in different markets and provide you with risk mitigation tools.

How women can secure more access to resources such as mentoring, networking and skills building

Connect with people, ideas, initiatives and organizations you admire and want to work with in your local community and around the world. Find a mentor. Identify a role model and build a community around you.

Network through business associations, or become a member of a trade association like OWIT (Organization of Women in International Trade) and I.E. Canada (The Canadian Association of Importers and Exporters). Membership in a global network like OWIT can help you develop contacts, educate yourself and keep up to date. Establishing connections with other women entrepreneurs opens doors to new networks, opportunities and learning.

Also consider taking on leadership roles in organizations that assist in both building your network and skills and providing resources such as experts to consult.

Follow entrepreneurs like Michele Romanow, Nicole Verkindt, or Vicki Saunders to get inspired and further develop your entrepreneurial mindset. If you’re circling around the idea of a new business venture but it’s not going anywhere, maybe you need to step back and get some perspective. To paraphrase Michele, you need to start before you have all the answers or the perfect product. Don’t hide away until it’s perfect – either someone will get the idea out, or you miss out on collaborating. In other words, don’t second guess yourself into never starting. Start by taking any small action to get the ball rolling.

Take advantage of free tools like the business start-up checklist from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. They offer lots of information, ranging from starting a business and financing, through to growing your business and also list a wide range of networks and business support organizations across Canada.

What’s encouraging is that there are numerous resources available to women-led businesses – and to make it easier we’ve put together a list to get you going.

Resources, advice and networks

Export Development Canada

The services of the TCS are free. They have hands-on knowledge that comes from helping thousands of companies each year tackle concrete problems and pursue opportunities in foreign markets.

Trade commissioners will help you evaluate your potential. They will discuss your competition, entry strategies and your company’s HR capacity. They will look at your capacity to fill large orders and manage long-term growth.

Trade commissioners will identify risks and challenges you might encounter. If you have a new opportunity in a challenging market, they will walk you through scenarios related to payment, taxation, visas and personal security.

Their website provides a wealth of information and resources, such as tips from experienced businesswomen, experienced women exporters, consultants, and trade officials. Want to start exporting today?
While great strides have been made worldwide in leveling the playing field and making business more accessible and inclusive to people of all genders, ethnicities, and walks of life, some major challenges remain.

In honour of International Women’s Day, here are five inspiring stories to highlight some of the remarkable women who tackle these challenges head on and have shared their wisdom and experiences with us.

1. How women in international trade can overcome cultural obstacles to succeed in any global market

On the surface, this topic may seem obsolete. Is it still even necessary to prepare women for a separate set of business culture rules than their male counterparts? Women have risen to the top of fields like science, politics and business in countries all around the globe.

Yet, unfortunately international business dealings still often present additional challenges for women. That doesn’t mean that we ladies can’t come prepared to deal with anything that comes our way. Here are a few things to keep in mind to overcome the unique challenges women face in some international markets.

2. From landed immigrant to entrepreneur and community leader – this is Pernille Fischer Boulter’s inspiring story

Over the past 25 years Pernille has worked on projects in over 90 countries and six continents in over 25 sectors, and founded her own successful consulting company. But, like many of her fellow immigrants, Pernille had left a successful professional career, credible achievements and a strong financial record behind, and had to start all over – she was even forced to retake her driver’s test.

This is her inspiring story of overcoming the challenges she faced due to her gender, cultural background, and the competitive nature of international business to become the ultimate success story.

Two years ago we were inspired to host a Twitter chat dedicated to the issues women face in all stages of business worldwide. To do that we rounded up some of the most influential voices we could find who are not only experts on the topic, but who deal with women’s issues, working to improve their lives daily.

It was an ambitious topic to challenge in our monthly #TradeElite Twitter chat (limited at the time to 140 characters or less!) and we were thrilled with the insightful responses we received from women business leaders around the world. Here’s a recap of that important and still relevant discussion.

4. Inspirational story from Iraq on overcoming barriers to a global trade career

Each day, Samar Raad Mezaal deals with the social upset and terrorist attacks that take place in Baghdad, the city she calls home. It’s humbling and inspiring that anyone can create a sense of normalcy for themselves through all of this, but Samar simply refuses to let these obstacles get in the way of her goals and success. Here’s her story.

5. Trade liberalization has a unique effect on women in global business

The goal of gender equality in today’s “progressive” trade policy is to anticipate the unequal impact of trade policy and trade commitments across gender – to minimize the negative consequences and maximize positive outcomes.

Collecting and analyzing data from a gender perspective will help us find out if where are ways in which men or women will be disproportionately affected, positively or negatively, by proposed policies and their implementation and mitigate the effects to even the playing field for people of all walks of life. Here are some of the things being looked at.
