Some professionals find their way into international trade by chance. For Ismail Benmezdad, CITP, it was a deliberate choice. From early in his career, he was drawn to the scale and complexity of global commerce; how goods move across continents, navigate regulatory frameworks, and ultimately reach the markets and communities that rely on them.

“I was drawn to international trade because of its complexity and global scope,” he explains.

“I wanted a career that combined strategic planning, analytical problem-solving, and the opportunity to connect markets across borders.”

That combination of strategy, execution, and global integration has defined his professional journey.

Rising through the ranks: where operations meet ingenuity

As Director of Operations at KLN Logistics Inc., Ismail leads large-scale logistics and warehouse operations, aligning service performance with financial and strategic objectives. His career progression reflects a consistent ability to safeguard revenue, manage risk, and deliver operational transformation.

One pivotal experience involved a high-value shipment placed under unexpected customs hold, threatening a major client commitment.

“The hold would have disrupted delivery timelines and placed a strategic account at risk,” he recalls.

“By engaging customs authorities directly and aligning cross-functional teams under accelerated timelines, we mitigated the risk and preserved the client relationship.”

Beyond immediate problem resolution, such situations underscore the importance of structured risk management and proactive stakeholder engagement.

In another initiative, he led a comprehensive warehouse optimization program that reduced operating costs by more than 20% while improving service reliability.

“The real achievement was not only cost reduction,” he notes, “but creating a performance-driven culture that connected operational efficiency with customer outcomes.”

The initiative integrated process redesign, performance metrics, and targeted technology enhancements, laying groundwork for sustainable operational scalability.

Engineering stronger supply chains

In his leadership roles, including Director of Operations and former Terminal Manager, Ismail has overseen complex freight and warehouse networks, implementing initiatives that enhance service levels while controlling cost structures.

“One of the most impactful projects involved optimizing freight operations to simultaneously reduce transit times and operating expenses,” he explains. “The outcome strengthened both customer satisfaction and overall operational performance.”

These improvements were driven by disciplined route analysis, vendor negotiations, workforce alignment, and a willingness to challenge legacy processes.

His experience reinforces a fundamental principle: operational excellence is not accidental, it is systematically designed.

The lesson he wishes he learned sooner

Reflecting on his career, Ismail identifies adaptability as the most critical leadership insight.

“The most valuable lesson I learned is that adaptability must be embedded into operational strategy,” he says.

“Global trade is influenced by regulatory shifts, geopolitical volatility, and market fluctuations.”

“Organizations that succeed are those that institutionalize agility—through scenario planning, diversified partnerships, and continuous improvement.”

For him, adaptability is not reactive. It is a strategic design principle that strengthens enterprise resilience.

FITTskills training: turning experience into strategy

Ismail’s natural leadership was strengthened through formal training. Completing the FITTskills program allowed him to reinforce years of hands-on experience with structured methodology and global best practices.

“FITTskills provided me with in-depth knowledge of international trade,” he says. “These courses have strengthened my ability to evaluate cross-border risk, regulatory exposure, and market-entry feasibility with greater strategic clarity.”

One course stood out in particular: Feasibility of International Trade.
“It gave me the most value,” he notes. “It helped me, and I use what I learned now in my daily work.”

With this training, he now approaches decisions with a sharper analytical lens, balancing operational realities with long-term strategic considerations.

Why he pursued the CITP designation

For Ismail, applying for the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation was the natural next step.

“I chose to apply for the CITP designation because it’s a globally recognized certification that reflects expertise and commitment in international trade,” he says.

“Earning the CITP designation was a proud and rewarding milestone for me. It validated my expertise in international trade and logistics.”

Recognition matters in an industry built on trust. And for Ismail, the designation amplifies both confidence and credibility.

Looking ahead: using the CITP to unlock future opportunities

Ismail views the CITP designation as an enabler for expanded executive responsibility.

“It positions me to contribute at a more strategic level—supporting enterprise-wide supply chain optimization, cross-border growth initiatives, and long-term operational resilience.”

When Shotaro Takechi reflects on his career, a clear theme emerges: a passion for connecting Japanese ideas, culture, and products with the world. As the CEO and Founder of LEAGUE Inc., Shotaro has built his business on the belief that quality products and services deserve a global stage.

Over the years, his journey has taken him from bustling international trade shows to pioneering crowdfunding campaigns and, most recently, to earning the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation, a milestone that has both validated and accelerated his work.

A natural beginning in global trade

Shotaro’s career in international trade was not so much a leap as it was a natural extension of his personal mission. “I embarked on a career in international trade as a natural extension of my passion for bridging Japanese innovation with global markets,” he explains.

Through LEAGUE Inc., he carved out a unique space by leveraging crowdfunding as a tool for domestic marketing and retail strategies. He quickly realized that products with strong potential in Japan also had the power to resonate abroad.

“International trade offered the perfect avenue to not only expand our business but also to connect Japanese craftsmanship with consumers worldwide.”

“My goal has always been to create value on a global scale.”

Stories from the frontlines of trade

Some of Shotaro’s favorite career moments have come from supporting Japanese businesses at international exhibitions such as the Canton Fair and Shenzhen Gift Show. His company’s role connecting clients with global manufacturers has often resulted in exclusive contracts that give Japanese consumers access to new products.

“Seeing these partnerships come to life is incredibly fulfilling,” Shotaro reflects. “Especially when our clients gain access to innovative products not available in Japan.”

Another rewarding aspect of his career has been teaching. Shotaro regularly runs marketing seminars, and watching participants succeed using the approaches he teaches has been one of his most satisfying experiences.

“It’s inspiring to see [my students] apply the strategies we’ve discussed and achieve significant results, expanding their businesses both domestically and internationally.”

A career-defining project: The AI Voice Mouse

Among his proudest accomplishments is the introduction of the AI Voice Mouse by Tess Gift to the Japanese market. He first encountered the product at CES in Las Vegas in 2022 and immediately recognized its potential.

Shotaro spearheaded a crowdfunding campaign that raised over 20 million yen and secured partnerships with major Japanese retailers, including Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera, Kitamura Camera, and LOFT.

“The product’s success not only resulted in significant revenue but also contributed to enhancing productivity for countless users across Japan,” he notes. “This project stands out as a testament to the power of international collaboration and effective market entry strategies.”

Discovering the true foundation of successful trade

Despite these successes, Shotaro admits that the path hasn’t always been straightforward. One lesson stands out above the rest: the importance of building trust-based relationships across cultures.

“In the beginning, I focused heavily on the technical aspects of trade—logistics, regulations, and contracts,” he recalls.

“I soon realized that the true foundation of successful international trade lies in understanding and respecting the cultural nuances that influence business practices.”

This mindset shift has made him a more effective leader and has opened doors that technical expertise alone could not.

“If I had known this earlier, I would have been able to navigate the complexities of international trade with greater ease and success from the very start.”

The transformative impact of FITTskills training

The number of FITT Diploma holders not only eclipses the previous year’s count but also emphasizes the increasing importance placed on trusted international trade credentials. This week, we’re putting the business spotlight on Randall Strategy, owned by CITP Quentin Randall. Quentin got his start in international trade when he joined an Alberta-led international mission to Mexico City. There, he supported Alberta-based SMEs as they expanded into Latin America. Since then, his company, Randall Strategy, has dedicated itself to helping small businesses access capital and enter new markets.

Tell us a little bit about your company?

Randall Strategy is led by certified financial and trade professionals. We de-risk business ventures so SMEs can raise capital and enter new markets. We help these companies get the capital and contracts they need so they can focus on running their business.

What are some of your favourite stories about your business and career?

Every time I get to meet and work with a new small business client, I learn about their operations and help them grow; it is a very rewarding experience. Most of these companies are family-owned and operated, and helping them understand that they too can compete globally is very rewarding.

What are some of your proudest professional accomplishments, or most interesting business projects you’ve worked on?

In 2021, my company helped a Canadian logistics company secure a major investment which saved them tens of thousands of dollars and set them up to ship products internationally. I have also imported samples of hand-woven hammams and throws from Turkey, and miniature wooden baseball bats from China. This project is on hold due to COVID-19, but it is still very rewarding to be connected with overseas suppliers.

What one piece of advice have you learned during your career that you wish you had known when you started working in international trade?

I wish I would’ve connected to an experienced 3PL and customs broker in the beginning. It is a long, slow, complicated process to navigate all the regulations and freight considerations yourself, and these groups help move things along. Working with a 3PL is such a time-saver and they de-risk a venture so well. 3PLs and customs brokers are well worth the investment.

Your business, Randall Strategy, helps clients raise capital and enter new markets. As a CITP, how do you foresee your designation playing a role in your company’s future?

I want to use my CITP designation and the knowledge that comes with it to do two things:

1. Help more clients access capital and successfully enter new international markets

2. Import new, high-quality products into Canada.

For someone who owns their own business, what was your experience with the FITTskills courses like? 

These courses were awesome. It validated much of what I thought to be true and taught me a great deal more about risk management than I expected. They have also enhanced my ability to provide clients with investment attraction and exporting support so they can raise capital, reach new markets, and grow their business. Looking towards future opportunities for my business, knowledge from these courses will smooth out my importing activities as I better understand the framework that needs to be in place to conduct a transaction.

My favourite course was International Trade Finance because it helped me better understand how to mitigate currency risk, make payments and ultimately complete a transaction. In my mind, a mutually beneficial transaction is the core of trade and this course really brought home how to do that.

We are also seeking to grow by importing products into Canada, and CITP designation is immediately recognizable overseas, providing a certain level of trust and professionalism.

I am proud to have my CITP designation. It validates my experience and signals to clients that I will represent their best interest. It also enhances my ability to participate in the global trade market, which is very exciting.

This year marks a historic milestone for FITT: It will be our 30th anniversary, marking an incredible journey for our organization. We began with a mission to improve the way international trade was done by filling in the many gaps of knowledge that individuals had when attempting to prepare, strategize, mitigate risk and succeed in global markets.

This was led by FITT’s founding father, Dieter Hollweck, CITP, who recollected of the time: “One thing I knew, there was a huge lack of training opportunities and access to “hands-on” knowledge of international trade, especially how to do it well and profitably and protect yourself from the associated risks.” With his guidance and the efforts of others, this mission was tackled with passion and dedication by a small and ambitious team who have grown and expanded to make FITT what it is today: the international standard for trade training and certification.

Moving with the times

It was a lofty goal, but we have pushed forward, adapted, and excelled with the many international changes along the way. For example, back when we started in 1992, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic had just been renamed the Russian Federation, succeeding the former Soviet Union. In the same year, European nations signed the EEA (European Economic Area Agreement) in Oporto, Portugal, and US President George Bush Senior, Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, and Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney began negotiating what became NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) shortly after. Clearly, the world of trade was changing at an incredible pace, and FITT’s endeavor to establish international trade as a body of knowledge and profession came at just the right time.

Since that time, international trade has skyrocketed through many global ups and downs, with the creation of the World Trade Organization occurring in 1995, and world trade volume and value expanding 4% and 5% respectively on average since 1995, according to a 2020 WTO report.

What 30 years in the industry means

“Celebrating FITT’s 30th anniversary is an exceptional milestone in many ways,” notes FITT President and CEO Caroline Tompkins, CITP. “First, it highlights the long and fruitful history FITT has had within the international trade ecosystem, not only setting the standard for international trade training but also international trade as a profession with the CITP (Certified International Trade Professional) designation. Second, it emphasizes our present and future. Currently, FITT training and the CITP designation are used in over 40 countries around the world.”

Milestones aplenty

There have been many accomplishments to get to this point, all of which have served to make FITT, FITT training, and the CITP®|FIBP® designation as successful as they are today. These include the following successes:

• 1992 – FITT is incorporated
• 1993 – The FITTskills Program is launched
• 1998 – FITT launches the world’s first professional designation for international trade practitioners, the CITP (Certified International Trade Professional) designation.
• 1999 – The launch of FITTskills Online

• 2007 – Recognition from the World Trade Centers Association

Recognizing the occasion

It’s only fitting that after so many years, we mark our 30th anniversary with big celebrations. We’re gearing up for an anniversary party, giveaways, events, and surprises throughout the year—all in acknowledgment of those who have helped make FITT the success it is today, from students and CITPs to partners, peers, and colleagues. We are looking forward to marking the occasion with those who are part of international trade as an industry, body of knowledge, and profession, because, together, we have helped make global trade as strong and resilient as it is today.

Colleen’s Spanish language skills are what spurred her into an international trade career. She had just returned from working in Uruguay on a Master’s curriculum program in ocean management, when she came across a vacancy in the Department of Foreign Affairs Latin American Bureau. That marked the beginning of a fulfilling career journey—and there has been no looking back since. 

Covering large gaming events as a Trade Commissioner in Brazil 

Among Colleen’s favourite career stories was her involvement in covering major gaming events, including the FIFA World Cup. She also was part of preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games while working in Brazil as a Trade Commissioner. 

“I was lucky to be able to visit and tour a large shipyard project, as well as some of the stadiums while under construction, the Rio Olympics locations, and headquarters—really great opportunities to see things in action.” 

Proud to work with the “Canadian Olympic Family” 

Helping Canadian companies that provide products and services related to large gaming events like the Olympics is what Colleen finds extremely satisfying. She takes pride in assisting them with the procurement process so they can succeed in different markets. She also enjoys training the large network of her trade commissioner colleagues, helping them enhance their performance.  

“Meeting more than 1000 of our staff members all over the world–we have a really amazing trade team at Global Affairs Canada and being a part of making them better every day is really great.”

Be prepared for hiccups and sudden changes 

Experience has taught Colleen to always be prepared for the unforeseen, as things rarely unfold as expected. It’s important to be open to any situation and seize opportunities as they present themselves. 

“You might have gone to a meeting with one expectation and a completely different opportunity, even in a different sector, suddenly appears—you need to be able to turn around quickly, grab it and run. Those are golden moments.” 

Gaining more confidence with FITTskills training 

For Colleen, the FITTskills courses proved extremely useful as she didn’t have any trade/MBA background. The in-depth and practical training helped her become a more knowledgeable and confident business advisor to her clients.  

“Systematically reviewing the various market entry strategies, the international financial instruments available to companies…it was a great overview that gave me a solid base from which to help clients (and help our trade commissioners in the TCS help clients).”

Colleen’s favourite course: 

“International Trade Finance was the most useful for me, as this area can feel opaque and a bit confusing, yet is so important for our clients and our Canadian companies.”

Colleen wanted the best way to validate her skills, experience, and hard work, and she knew the prestigious CITP®|FIBP® designation would help her do this:

“I wanted to highlight the skills I had developed, the studies I’d finished, and the experience I’d gained over the last 10 years. This seemed like a good way to both demonstrate those and connect with others in the international trade field.” 

Colleen is confident that her newly acquired designation will her network with other international trade professionals and allow them to connect with her as well.  

“I think it demonstrates my commitment to the field” 

Colleen’s love for her profession, combined with her knowledge and enthusiasm, has already set her on a successful path. There is no doubt that this is just the beginning of many more accomplishments just waiting to happen in the years to come.

Originally hailing from China, Lannia MacAleer was only eleven years old when she first began helping her parents with their business. At 13, she took to learning English as a second language, and this piqued her interest in getting to know more about foreign cultures. 

“After teaching English as a second language for 5 years, in 2002, I had an opportunity to work with an international trading company responsible for product sourcing from China for American clients. I have been fascinated with doing business with people across four continents ever since.” 

Memorable career highlights 

Some of Lannia’s favourite stories from her exciting career journey include the following: 

• Sourcing and shipping 400 containers of fabrication parts overseas in one year with a small team 
• Creatively transforming Prince Edward Island Malpeque oysters into uniquely branded and packaged world-class oysters that wowed industry pioneers and gained popularity in top restaurants in New York City 
• Participating in the International Oyster Shucking Relay Competition on the Great Wall of China with national oyster shucking champions from 10 countries during a trade mission promoting Atlantic Canadian oysters 
• Learning about how different kinds of machinery work with technical terms in two languages at the same time 

Where there is a will, there is a way 

Lannia’s firm belief that everything is possible if you’ve got the determination to accomplish it spurs her to create win-win solutions during challenging business negotiations. Her proudest achievements in international trade have been making successful business deals with people and companies across the globe. 

Think from the buyer’s perspective 

When asked about the most valuable insight her career journey has taught her, Lannia says it’s all about solving the problem for the buyer. 

“One piece of advice I’d like to share is that, in order to attract the attention and have deeper conversations with buyers, always ask yourself the question and search for the answer: What problem is the buyer facing? What solution could I offer to solve that problem and increase value for that buyer?”

Trade training that added new skills to boost professional performance 

Lannia undertook FITTskills training to develop a deeper understanding of the many facets of international trade. She finds the training to be comprehensive, practical, and straightforward. 

“The training is practical and straightforward. It not only reinforced my existing knowledge on international trade but also imparted me with new skills that I can utilize in my daily work helping companies expand their international businesses.” 

On her favourite FITTskills course: 

“My favorite FITTskills course is International Sales and Marketing. I’ve always been interested in the process of creating or adapting products for specific international markets, developing and promoting a brand that appeals to the values and preferences of the target market, and establishing sales channels.”

Adding the stamp of excellence to her profile 

After accomplishing the FITT Diploma in International Trade, Lannia’s next goal was to apply for the elite CITP®|FIBP® designation, which she earned in April 2021. With this credential added to her profile, she now joins a distinguished community of professionals globally validated as experts in their field and committed to furthering the cause of international trade. 

“The CITP designation is a prestigious and globally recognized designation built on competency standards and credibility for global trade professionals. I wanted to put this stamp of excellence on my prole and enhance my professional performance and credibility.” 

Lannia now feels renewed confidence in her knowledge and expertise to help businesses accomplish their expansion goals. She also looks forward to greater networking opportunities with her peers located in every corner of the world.

His 20 plus years of experience in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FCMG) has seen Luis Marques take on various roles within the beverage industry. He began his career working in marketing and sales for the domestic market in Portugal and was then invited to head the Export Market Business at SUMOL + COMPAL, a Portuguese company which is a market leader for non-alcoholic beverages in Portugal. The company’s branches span over 60 countries across all five continents, with their own manufacturing plants or with local partners working either in a franchising or export model. 

Over the last eight years in this role, Luis has made more than 120 business trips and visited 40 countries. 

What I love most about my work is the opportunities I get to meet different people and experience cultures, to try new foods and to learn new customs.

Gastronomical “taste drives” that help bond with clients 

Working in the food & beverage industry, it doesn’t come as a surprise to find distributors and clients that are fond of food, and all great stories invariably start around a dining table. 

When you meet a new partner for the first time and you demonstrate genuine interest about their culture and customs, normally they feel proud to take you for a ‘taste drive’ of their gastronomy.

From the delicious curry-like stews served on a large circular injera (bread) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the pure flavour steak-tartar in Paris, France and the juicy soup dumplings in Shanghai, China to the succulent and smoky barbecue spareribs in New Jersey, U.S., Luis has been on many amazing culinary journeys. 

From those experiences, you get to know a little more about consumer habits and the relationship with food and drink in a country, and first and foremost, you get to know the real people that you are going to do business with and seize the opportunity together.

Developing new markets from scratch 

Luis is proud to represent the two most iconic non-alcoholic beverage brands in Portugal in the international markets. As Portugal is a country of emigrants, a third of the population lives abroad. Therefore, their natural consumers are the Portuguese speaking countries and others with a strong Portuguese presence. Targeting these “homesick” markets is relatively easier as it’s almost like an extension of their home market. 

The big challenge though is when they need to develop new markets from scratch. During the last three years, Luis has been involved in franchising projects in markets where there was no existing brand equity, requiring them to introduce their product for the first time. 

In these projects, the best strategy to promote our brands was through tastings. When the consumer had the chance to taste our brands, they understood the quality and naturalness of our products.

Precious advice for those starting their career in international trade 

Luis has 3 valuable tips that might prove useful to all those beginning their journey in global business. 

1. Focus on the markets where you have a competitive advantage and invest your human and financial resources in it. In the other markets, you either sell without any customization or you should avoid them. Opportunistic sales are usually one-off sales where the setup costs don’t cover either the margin or the time spent.  

1. Optimize your natural markets. Usually, there are opportunities for improvement in any market. Look for efficiency in distribution and promotion. You need to visit the markets and work together with your partners.  

1. Focus on scale and price structure when evaluating a new market. You will need scale to customize your value proposition and you will need a price structure that creates value for the consumer, for the retailer, for your partner, and for your company. The opportunity for new business will not be viable if your retail price is not competitive. 

International trade training that enhanced his professional competence 

Luis signed up for FITTskills training and found the experience rewarding. The courses allowed him to upscale his international trade-related knowledge and imparted fresh insights that proved invaluable to him on the work front.  

When you work in the food & beverages industry, value chain management is critical to be able to trade in any market. The Global Value Chain course gave me a better understanding of where I can optimize some of the activities for my products to become more competitive within the international markets.

After successfully completing his FITTskills Diploma in International Trade, Luis applied for the CITP®|FIBP® designation to be able to connect with a broader network of international trade practitioners. He also believed it would be a great way to be in touch with the latest trends and to continue with his professional development. 

Luis is proud to receive this elite designation. After two years of study, earning the  CITP®|FIBP® was, for him, a recognition of all his hard work and dedication to his profession over the last eight years. 

With the acquisition of the FITT Diploma in International Trade and earning the  CITP®|FIBP® designation I will be able to improve my performance as an international trade practitioner and to develop my team better.

We wish Luis many more professional milestones and are sure that his knowledge, strategy, and acumen will help his brand successfully “conquer” newer markets in the years to come.

The role of FITT’s educational partners in ensuring that their educators continue to maintain the highest standards of professional competence is no less commendable. The last six months saw our partner institutions Algonquin College and George Brown College adding new CITPs to their teaching staff.

Daniel Lewis applied for the CITP designation to help equip him for the future as a small business owner and entrepreneur.

The CITP designation will be a very respectable addition to my business achievements when being considered for future opportunities. I think there are so many opportunities and networks that I can tap into because of this designation.

Developing a wholesome understanding of International trade  

In the first half of 2020, 131 individuals went on to complete the requisites to earn the FITT Diploma in International Trade. Candidates aspiring to earn a diploma must demonstrate knowledge in each of the broad categories that international trade comprises of – ranging from analyzing business readiness, finance, supply chain management and market entry to product development, sales and marketing. This familiarizes them with the various aspects of global trade and how the different processes need to work in sync in order to culminate in a successful business transaction.

Earning the FITT Diploma is an essential criterion to apply for the CITP designation and we are confident that many of our current diploma holders will go on to apply for and achieve the CITP stamp of excellence.

Those earning diplomas between January and June 2020 represent a plethora of roles across 21 companies of varying sizes. Besides those listed in the CITP category, our new diploma holders are integral members of teams from reputed organizations like Boréal Trading Company, ETG Commodities Inc, Diva International Inc., Cabot Community Business Development Corporation, and Ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation du Québec.

Getting an opportunity to work in both the public and private sectors has proved educational and fulfilling for Laura and has paved the way to her future success.

The FITTskills courses provided the base and foundation for my career. Completing the courses gave me and my future employers the confidence that I had the know-how and dedication that a career in international trade entailed.

Taking the first step to upgrading knowledge and skillset

Most professionals understand the importance of complementing their professional expertise with a solid and holistic know-how that is industry backed. Some embark on this path to upgrade their knowledge on a specific skillset and others consider the FITT certificate a first step towards earning the FITT Diploma, and ultimately the CITP designation.

Whatever their aim, we are proud to award the FITT Certificate in International Trade to 133 new recipients who have upskilled their proficiency. Hadi applied for and went on to be awarded the CITP in January 2020. He is immensely proud to have earned the elite designation, as it not only adds value to his knowledge and experience but distinguishes him as a an internationally certified trade practitioner.

It was an enthusiastic interest in interacting with people from countries around the world that fuelled Romi Jaszczynski’s career choice – helping businesses go global. Romi’s  international trade career began soon after he completed his Master’s studies in 2014, when he joined the trade and investment team at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw.

“I was always interested in working with businesses expanding internationally, and this opportunity allowed me to confirm I chose the right path!”

Some of Romi’s most memorable experiences happened whilst working with the Ontario Government when he travelled across Ontario delivering export workshops to SMEs looking for new markets. This tenure taught him a lot about how to tweak the program based on specific pain points, making him look forward to another opportunity to teach sometime in the future.

“A career in international trade really does put you in situations you would never have imagined.”

Meeting Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley during a 4-week temporary duty assignment in Las Vegas, attending a Blue Jays game with the Governor of Utah and even hanging out with Paris Hilton in a little-known industrial city in Poland are a few of Romi’s favorite career stories.

Romi’s proudest accomplishments

“The most interesting project I have worked on has to be the U.S. President’s Export Council trade mission to Poland. It was one of the first projects I had a chance to work on and is still the greatest learning experience I’ve had.”

The visit took place at a crucial time for Poland, when it was looking to expand its defence capabilities. It was the largest trade mission in the history of U.S.-Poland relations and the attendees included important delegates like the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the CEOs of North America’s largest companies. The project was a great experience as it gave him a chance to sit in on meetings and manage aspects of the mission and logistics, presenting him with the opportunity to learn best practices from some of the most influential business figures in the world.

“As far as other projects, collaborating with businesses to successfully bring their product to a new market is among the most challenging and rewarding accomplishments!”

A valuable piece of career advice

The single most important takeaway from his career so far, according to Romi is to “find your niche and become really good at it. You will never know everything about everything.”

It is this mantra that guided him towards taking FITTskills business training courses and earning industry recognised credentials in international trade. Romi particularly enjoyed being able to learn on his own time and applying real life examples from work to the course questions and exercises.

“Feasibility of International Trade was my favourite course because it highlights the importance of patience and preparation when it comes to expanding internationally. I think we all know of businesses which were eager to expand internationally without conducting proper due diligence and capacity assessments. I think this is probably the most important course out of all of them.”

Romi went on to earn the FITT Diploma in International Trade and soon after, decided to apply for, and was successfully awarded, the CITP®|FIBP® designation.

“It was the next step in continuing my learning within the international trade field. It is also the only certification program within the area. Heard about it through the Ontario Government.”

The CITP designation has opened the doors for Romi to continue building the network, as he enjoys the opportunity to connect with other CITPs.

Looking to a promising future

Romi is currently working as Business Development Manager at Polish Investment and Trade Agency and is poised for an exciting upward career trajectory.

“I believe the CITP designation will add another layer of confidence for myself and any businesses I work with in the future.”
