<p><span data-contrast="auto">Many people don’t fully grasp business on a global scale until they begin running one themselves. For Nathaly Mesa, CITP, years of running small businesses opened the door to international opportunities—and sparked a new fascination. As she applied her business management background in a global context, it became clear that international trade was the natural next step in her career.</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span><span id="more-40805"></span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">“I began my journey in international trade out of a deep interest in global markets and how businesses </span><a href="https://fittfortrade.com/content/crossing-borders-and-managing-customs"><span data-contrast="none">expand across borders</span></a><span data-contrast="auto">,” she explains, adding that, while running businesses, “I often encountered opportunities that involved international clients and suppliers. This sparked my curiosity and motivated me to explore the field further.”</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">To advance her expertise, she pursued the </span><a href="https://fittfortrade.com/credentials"><span data-contrast="none">FITT Diploma</span></a><span data-contrast="auto"> in International Trade, a transformative step that, in her words, “gave me both practical tools and strategic insights into global business operations.”</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<h2>Combining two passions: global trade and <a href="https://tradeready.ca/2024/featured-stories/5-brands-leading-with-sustainable-supply-chains/">sustainability</a></h2>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Nathaly is a fan of international business and green practices, so when she had the opportunity to work with a sustainable furniture company, she jumped at the chance.</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">“One of my favourite stories from my career was working with a furniture company whose concept immediately caught my attention,” she says. </span></p>

<p><span data-contrast="auto">Being involved in their international expansion was both exciting and meaningful, she says. She had the opportunity to support them in navigating logistics, understanding trade compliance, and building relationships with overseas partners. Recognizing that her contributions helped a sustainable business scale internationally, while also promoting eco-conscious practices, made the experience “incredibly fulfilling,” she adds.</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<h2>Championing Colombian craftsmanship around the world</h2>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Nathaly reflects on another project with pride, one that was significant to her—not only from a business perspective but on a cultural and personal level too. </span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Working with artisans from her home country, she led internationalization campaigns for their handcrafted products: </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">“I worked closely with local artisans, whose incredible craftsmanship reflects Colombia’s rich cultural heritage. Through hard work, strategic planning, and a deep respect for their work, we were able to introduce these unique products into demanding international markets in Europe and North America.”</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">“Seeing them embraced abroad was incredibly rewarding,” she reflects. “It confirmed my belief in the value of combining international trade with cultural preservation and ethical business practices.”</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">This work underscores her approach to trade not simply as a means of profit, but as a platform to elevate culture, sustainability, and community empowerment.</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<h2>A career shaped by cross-cultural intelligence</h2>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Looking back, Nathaly now understands the importance of </span><a href="https://fittfortrade.com/intercultural-competence"><span data-contrast="none">cultural competence</span></a><span data-contrast="auto"> and relationship-building in business. It is a lesson she wishes to impart to new professionals in the field of trade.</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>

<p><span data-contrast="auto">She goes on to explain that, early on in her career, she placed heavy focus on logistics, compliance, and strategy, “which are, of course, critical,” she emphasizes. “But I later realized that understanding cultural nuances and building genuine trust with international partners can be just as important for long-term success.”</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Now she takes the time to learn about different business practices, communication styles, and cultural expectations, and this, she believes, has helped her avoid misunderstandings, strengthen partnerships, and ultimately close better deals. “If I had embraced that earlier, I believe some challenges could have been turned into opportunities more quickly,” she says.</span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p>

<p><span data-contrast="auto">For Nathaly, earning her </span><a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification"><span data-contrast="none">Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®)</span></a><span data-contrast="auto"> designation was an intentional step to solidify her place in the global trade community:</span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto"> “I chose to apply for the CITP designation because I see it as a mark of excellence and credibility in the field of international trade. Earned his elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: February 2025

<p>For Ted Lomond, CITP, international trade isn’t an isolated field—it is the progression of a career devoted to business and economic development. His path through high-profile government positions, global market strategy, and the renewable energy sector underscores this path, one that has seen him build powerful relationships that shape regional and international growth.<span id="more-40643"></span></p>
<p>His early work as Deputy Minister responsible for International Trade and Tourism for the <a href="https://www.gov.nl.ca/">Government of Newfoundland and Labrador</a> showed him how trade can strengthen industries and communities alike.</p>
<p>“I worked directly with industry to promote economic development through trade,” he says. It’s a foundation that prepared him for his current role as President and CEO of <a href="https://northatlantic.ca/leadership/">North Atlantic</a>, an Atlantic-based energy company now moving confidently into international renewable markets.</p>
<h2>Expanding industries and horizons</h2>
<p>Throughout his career, Ted has had a front-row seat to the growth of companies aiming to expand internationally. His favourite stories often come from watching small, rural businesses flourish either in new markets or locally.</p>

<p>For example, “One small aviation training company I worked with went on to become a major employer in the region,” he recalls.</p>
<h2>Leading the future of clean energy exports</h2>
<p>Today, Ted’s ambitious work centers around leading North Atlantic through the global energy transition. His mandate is far from small.</p>
<p>“Right now, I’m leading a regional energy company through energy transition using cost discipline and aggressive diversification into low-carbon product lines such as hydrogen and its derivatives, renewable diesel, and energy efficiency,” he explains.</p>
<p>North Atlantic’s growth strategy includes developing global markets for renewable energy, backed by major infrastructure plans. These include a 320 MW wind farm, a hydrogen generation plant capable of producing 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, and a hydrogenation plant that converts hydrogen into a Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) for export.</p>
<p>At the same time, North Atlantic has been pursing international expansion and recently completed the purchased the second largest refinery in France at Gravenchon. Operating as North Atlantic Energies, they are now a major player in the downstream oil sector in France and are assessing the potential for green hydrogen produced in Newfoundland and Labrador to replace a portion of the grey hydrogen used at the facility.</p>
<p>Projects of this scale require deep international trade knowledge—from regulatory alignment to logistics, financing, and <a href="https://tradeready.ca/explainer/mastering-the-art-of-competitor-analysis-a-comprehensive-guide/">market analysis</a>. It’s one of the reasons Ted’s background and experience in trade is so valuable in the fast-moving renewable sector.</p>
<h2>Prepare well, follow up consistently, and exercise patience</h2>
<p>Throughout his career, Ted has seen countless companies pursue international markets, and he’s learned that success rarely comes quickly or easily.</p>

<p>He has also often witnessed companies approach trade missions or foreign meetings without doing the groundwork required. “I have been involved in numerous trade missions and too often have seen firms not preparing in advance. Without <a href="https://tradeready.ca/explainer/how-to-do-customer-research/">understanding your potential customer</a>, you are not able to articulate what problem you can solve or the value you can bring.”</p>
<p>Equally critical, he adds, is making the effort to circle back with contacts—even if it’s simply to say thanks.</p>
<p>“I have seen firms not properly follow up with leads. Many times, companies return from international business meetings and fail to reconnect in a timely fashion or even thank potential customers for the meeting. Sometimes the organizers of trade activities contribute to this by focusing on the number of attendees vs. the readiness of participants.”</p>

<h2>Applying FITTskills knowledge to his leadership role in the energy sector</h2>
<p>When Ted began steering North Atlantic toward international renewable energy markets, the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/edc-fitt-online-courses">FITTskills program</a> helped expand his perspective.</p>

<p>Because the hydrogen sector is so new, “<a href="https://fittfortrade.com/cost-and-pricing-analysis">pricing</a>, offtake durations, transportation routes, and means of conveyance are still in flux,” the courses add value during the formative stages of working in this emerging sector.</p>
<p>He found <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/international-trade-finance">International Trade Finance</a> particularly useful, in this regard, citing it as his favourite course. “Some of the material was new to me and has been useful as we look at the types of financing that will be necessary for developing new, less carbon-intensive industries.”</p>
<h2>Gaining a “common language” with the CITP</h2>
<p>In developing markets for clean hydrogen, Ted regularly collaborates with international partners, governments, and export development agencies. Many individuals within these groups hold the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification">Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®)</a> designation, and that peer recognition played a role in his decision.</p>
<p>“I see the advantage of having the CITP designation as a means of establishing a common language and approach to the work,” he says.</p>
<p>In addition to creating useful dialogue between contacts, the CITP designation was also indicative of his constant learning mindset: “I am definitely a lifelong learner and enjoy learning new things. I feel the CITP designation is a significant credential and I have a sense of accomplishment having achieved it,” he says.</p>
<p>Looking ahead, he sees the credential as both a professional signal and a strategic tool.</p>

Earned his elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: February, 2025

<p>For Philippe Ferland, CITP, the path into international trade was organic, unfolding naturally as his curiosity and analytical strengths aligned with a growing opportunity.</p>
<p>After completing his master’s degree, he was approached by the manager of the Business Intelligence team at <a href="https://www.investcanada.ca/">Invest in Canada</a>, who encouraged him to apply for her newly forming team. He did, and it changed the course of his career.<span id="more-40626"></span></p>
<p>“I began in a research-focused role where I developed reports related to foreign direct investments and international trade and transitioned to a client-focused role later in my career,” Philippe explains. The shift not only expanded his responsibilities, but deepened his understanding of global investment flows and the human connections behind them.</p>
<h2>From research to real-world trade interactions</h2>
<p>One of Philippe’s most memorable experiences came when he hosted his first site visit—a week-long tour across Quebec and Ontario with the CEO of an Austrian company. Coordinating the agenda required meticulous planning involving extensive collaboration between two provincial partners.</p>
<p>“It wasn’t until the Saturday before the visit that I completed the agenda and sent it to the company,” he recalls. The CEO jokingly admired how “hard-working public servants must be in Canada for doing work on a Saturday.”</p>
<p>The week that followed was a success on every front. Philippe served not only as a guide to Canadian opportunities but as a cultural bridge between Canada and Austria. When the visit ended, the company identified several ideal factory locations and expressed continued interest in investing. The CEO even gifted Philippe Austrian chocolates and wine, small tokens of gratitude for a job exceptionally well done.</p>
<h2>Seeing world leaders in action</h2>
<p>Another favourite moment in Phillipe’s career came during the 2023 CERAWeek in Texas, one of the world&#8217;s premier energy events, founded by Cambridge Energy Research Associates. There, Philippe unexpectedly found himself sharing the convention floor with a notable guest:</p>

“We saw John Kerry just casually walk by the Canadian booth every morning… it was always a surprise to us—seeing him in person.&#8221;</p>

<p>He adds that he was impressed that the Former US secretary of state did not have an extensive security detail and seemed entirely at ease.</p>
<h2>Shaping the energy sector with a cornerstone report</h2>
<p>While Philippe’s client-facing work keeps him engaged daily, one of his proudest professional achievements comes from his earlier research days as a Business Intelligence Analyst: “I wrote a comprehensive report on the battery supply chain that broke down opportunities to attract investment across every stage of it,” he explains. It was a major undertaking—months of interviews with industry experts and analysis condensed into a single strategic document.</p>
<p>The result? The report received significant praise internally and became a cornerstone of Invest in Canada’s national strategy for the sector. It also gave Philippe a deep expertise in an industry critical to Canada’s future competitiveness, expertise he continues to apply in his work today.</p>
<p>“Getting to write such a useful piece of research to the organization was really rewarding. The knowledge I gained writing it has supported all the work I&#8217;ve done in the sector ever since.”</p>
<h2>Patience and experience lead to “second-nature” instincts</h2>
<p>Reflecting on what he wishes he knew earlier in his career, Philippe emphasizes patience and persistence, stating:</p>

<p class="end-quote">“It takes time to fully develop into a role in this space. International trade is a complex subject with many nuances, and you won&#8217;t have all the answers immediately. However, over time, you&#8217;ll be exposed to enough scenarios that your ability to handle most situations will become second nature.”</p>

<p>It’s advice that mirrors his own growth—from researcher, to advisor, to a trusted liaison between foreign investors and Canadian opportunity.</p>
<h2>How the FITTskills program expanded his global perspective</h2>
<p>Philippe’s decision to pursue the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/edc-fitt-online-courses">FITTskills program</a> helped broaden his horizons beyond niche focuses. He liked how the courses were straightforward and accessible while also offering important information to anyone looking to work in international trade. He also found particular value in the rounded view of trade that the program gave him:</p>

<p>For Philippe, applying for the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification">Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®)</a> designation was a natural extension of his learning.</p>
<p>“It was the goal I was aiming for by taking the courses. Being designated as a Certified International Trade Professional shows I have the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in this field,” he explains.</p>

<p>When Nil Özçelik Razavi, PhD, first moved from Turkey to Canada in 2007 to complete her doctoral research in Translation Studies, she never imagined she would one day be working in international trade. Yet her journey from academia to becoming a <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification"><strong>Certified International Trade Professional (CITP)</strong></a> shows just how powerful career reinvention can be.<span id="more-40470"></span></p>
<h2>A new professional path</h2>
<p>After earning her PhD and teaching for several years, Nil realized that opportunities in academia were limited. “I worked in the field of language instruction for a few years while thinking I might need a career conversion at some point,” she explains.</p>
<p>That career shift came when she was hired as a Trade Expert at the Commercial Office of the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa. Drawing on her research background and analytical skills, she quickly adapted to the demands of international trade. What began as a new opportunity soon grew into a meaningful career helping businesses from Turkey and Canada connect.</p>
<h2>Representing her country abroad</h2>
<p>For Nil, one of the most rewarding aspects of her work is engaging directly with trade delegations and Canadian businesses. “My favourite moments are the ones shared with our incoming trade delegations and presentations delivered in different business settings in Canada,” she says. These events, she adds, are not just about exchanging information. They are about building valuable connections that can shape future trade relationships.</p>
<p>Collaboration is another part of the role she values deeply.</p>

<p>For her, success in international trade is always the result of teamwork.</p>
<p>Shifting careers required not only new skills but also perseverance. Nil has learned firsthand how vital resilience is in both personal and professional growth. “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop,” she says, quoting Confucius. That philosophy has guided her through challenges and continues to motivate her as she grows in her trade career.</p>
<h2>Building confidence with FITTskills</h2>
<p>To strengthen her expertise, Nil turned to <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/edc-fitt-online-training"><strong>FITTskills training</strong></a>. She describes the courses as both practical and confidence-building.</p>

She also points to <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/feasibility-international-trade"><strong>Feasibility of International Trade</strong></a> as particularly useful, since it broadened her ability to analyze sectors at a macro level and anticipate trends. Together, these courses provided her with the analytical frameworks she now uses daily to support businesses in exploring new markets.</p>

<p>With her growing expertise and practical experience, Nil decided to formalize her skills with the<a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification"> <strong>CITP designation</strong></a>. “The reason I chose to apply for the CITP designation is because this is the highest level of professional accreditation for international business and trade professionals,” she explains.</p>
<p>When she received the designation, it was more than just a line on her résumé. “It is great to be a part of the CITP community, and it means a lot to me, so much so that I proudly hung up my framed CITP designation on my office wall.”</p>
<h2>The impact of holding the CITP designation</h2>
<p>Earning her CITP has enhanced Nil’s career in multiple ways. It provided validation of her skills and gave her a new perspective on leadership in international trade.</p>

<p>Now that she has been a CITP for over a year, Nil sees the designation as a launchpad for continued growth. <p>Audrey’s professional journey has been just as global as her education. After completing her studies in France, she moved to Canada, eager to experience a new business environment. There, she immersed herself in the world of entrepreneurship and small business support. “I had the privilege of working with small businesses across various industries, helping them understand the <a href="https://tradeready.ca/explainer/creating-a-small-market-entry-strategy-for-success/">challenges and opportunities of international expansion</a>,” she recalls.</p>
<p>One particularly rewarding experience involved guiding a small Canadian business in its early steps toward global trade.</p>
<p>“The client needed help with logistics, risk assessment, and adapting marketing strategies for different regions. It was incredible to see how foundational knowledge—what seems basic to us in the field—can be transformative for a business owner just starting out.”</p>
<p>Her passion for international business took her further, leading to a stint in South America during her master’s program. There, she explored and connected the local startup and innovation ecosystem, gaining valuable firsthand insights into how businesses in the region approached global trade.</p>

For one accomplished professional, the journey from a biology student to a <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification">Certified International Trade Professional (CITP)</a> has been transformative, marked by diverse roles, global projects, and a relentless pursuit of growth.<span id="more-40129"></span></p>
<p>Hardik Panchal, Director, Export sales at Worldest Exports, has built a career that spans global market expansion, international joint ventures, and sustainable trade initiatives. His contributions have driven multimillion-dollar export growth, created hundreds of jobs, and positioned him as a leading expert in global trade facilitation.</p>
<h2>Helping companies diversify into new global markets from the start</h2>
<p>Hardik’s journey in international trade began in 2007, when he joined a multinational pharmaceutical company Vipro Lifescience as an International Marketing Officer. His talent for cross-cultural negotiations and market strategy enabled him to facilitate new trade deals in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.</p>
<p>“I started my career in international trade because of a combination of personal interest and strategic opportunities,” Hardik recalls</p>

<p>In his tenure at a leading chemical producer from 2017 to 2023, he successfully increased international sales by an impressive 60%, helping the company establish a strong presence in South East Asia, North America and Europe.</p>

<p>Through his representation, Hardik has led global marketing initiatives, positioning WhipAppeal as a competitive brand in international markets,identified and sourced reliable suppliers across various regions, ensuring the quality and cost-effectiveness of products, managed OEM production relationships, coordinating production schedules and ensuring product quality and timely delivery, and negotiated favorable terms with both vendors and customers, ensuring mutually beneficial contracts and expanding WhipAppeal’s market presence.</p>
<p>These efforts helped WhipAppeal Inc. significantly expand its product distribution network, secure major contracts, and successfully navigate complex international trade regulations.</p>
<h2>Formal international business training and a multicultural learning environment in Singapore</h2>
<p>Recognizing the need to enhance his business acumen, Hardik pursued an Advanced Diploma in Business Management from AEC College, Singapore in 2011. <p>During this time, he visited Singapore’s world-class shipping port, where he learned about merchanting exports and advanced supply chain models, skills that later helped him streamline complex export operations for multiple businesses.</p>
<h2>Driving multimillion-dollar international trade projects</h2>
<p>Hardik’s global business impact extends beyond individual companies, as he has played a direct role in major international trade and investment projects.</p>
<p>One of the achievements he is most proud of was his leadership in a $6 million foreign direct investment (FDI) joint venture in South Africa between Vintron Infotech (a division of VLCP Ltd) and Ventura Infotech (Pty) Ltd., where he co-managed market research and entry strategies, regulatory compliance and trade facilitation, JV structuring and supply chain coordination, and installing the manufacturing facility.</p>
<p>This major initiative led to the creation of 170 sustainable jobs in Johannesburg and positioned the company as a key player in the African market.</p>

<h2>Sharing international trade expertise through teaching and mentorship</h2>
<p>Beyond business success and personal achievements, Hardik is passionate about mentorship. Throughout his career he’s had the support of leaders who took the time to help develop his industry knowledge.</p>
<p>He has also acted as a mentor himself, service as a faculty member at IMPEXPERTS, where he trained over 500 MSMEs and entrepreneurs in export strategies and a trainer for international business programs teaching trade finance, buyer identification, and market expansion.</p>

<p>Looking ahead, Hardik is focusing on sustainable trade practices and ESG compliance, aiming to help SMEs transition to low-carbon supply chains and eco-friendly products.</p>
<p>“The next five years will see a massive shift toward sustainable trade. Companies that adopt green alternatives early will have a competitive advantage,” he predicts.</p>
<p>He is currently working on export promotion initiatives that assist businesses in aligning with global ESG standards, ensuring compliance with new trade regulations in North America and Europe.</p>
<p>&#8220;I want to introduce sustainable business practices to SMEs globally, helping them offer low-carbon products and green alternatives.” He foresees significant shifts in international trade trends over the next 5-10 years and aim to help businesses stay ahead.</p>

<p>Manpreet Kaur’s career in international business brought her from marketing vehicles like tractors and cars to managing risk in international trade financing. When her career and passions brought her from India and Canada, she recognized that <a href="https://tradeready.ca/2022/featured-stories/3-new-citps-in-international-finance-talk-about-their-career-success/">the CITP designation</a> would be an asset as she established herself in a new country.</p>
<p>She found that earning the CITP helped validate her global experience. Earning this designation wasn’t just a career milestone, but a strategic move to validate her extensive experience and enhance her credibility in a new country. Having an internationally recognized designation can help an experienced professional like Manpreet showcase her experience in a way many professionals trust and recognize.</p>
<p>Reflecting on her various roles in exports, marketing, and finance, Manpreet describes one constant throughout her career.</p>

<h2>How education and a spark of inspiration directed her career path</h2>
<p>Manpreet became interested in international business and trade while working on her MBA in India. At the time, she was especially fascinated with applying marketing techniques internationally.</p>
<p>During her third semester of her MBA, she started working for Sonalika International where she had the opportunity to work on <a href="https://tradeready.ca/2024/topics/researchdevelopment/you-can-conduct-valuable-secondary-trade-research-from-your-desk-heres-how/">market research</a>, studying African markets. She took a few months off from her degree to immerse herself in this new job before returning to complete the degree. She especially appreciated the solutions-finding approach to international business that her training and education helped her hone.</p>

<p>“Yes, you have to perform. You have to be the person to give the solution.”</p>
<p>Whether earning an MBA or CITP designation, Manpreet has always sought opportunities to deepen her expertise while also continuing to gain practical real world experience.</p>
<h2>Combining hands-on experience with a commitment to education</h2>
<p>She moved on to a position with Honda Cars India Limited, where her international business background led to her working in the imports division. The cars were manufactured for Honda in India using parts imported from Thailand and Japan.</p>
<p>“This experience of seeing the whole process from imported components coming in, to assembly, and then either being sold locally or exported from India was fascinating,” she said.</p>
<p>She also took minutes during meetings with business delegates from China and from American engine manufacturer Cummins. Being present during these meetings helped to expand her knowledge of export processes and trade.</p>
<h2>How her career evolved from marketing exports to trade finance</h2>
<p>Within a couple of years, she started to pivot from marketing to trade finance when she accepted a position with ECGC Ltd (Export Credit Guarantee Corporation). She started from the ground up, as an executive assistant, and over the years, worked her way up to Senior Manager of the Buyer Underwriting Department, where her team managed underwriting risk for buyers across a portfolio of 20 countries.</p>
<p>She explained, “I gained a lot of experience in international trade finance, through a company that was under the Ministry of Commerce in the Government of India. It can be compared to the work that <a href="https://www.edc.ca/">Export Development Canada</a> does.”</p>
<p>She recalls an incident where her international trade experience helped her deal with the complexities of exports in the global market. An exporter’s consignment was stuck at a port in Iran as a result of default by the buyer. This exporter had taken a due cover from her employer. Manpreet applied her knowledge and established relationships to help that exporter get complete payment and fully resolve the issue.</p>
<p>“I leveraged my relations developed over a long period of time in the field and in the country to find an alternative buyer for the consignment in a matter of just about a week,” she recalled. The exporter and her managers appreciated how promptly she helped resolve the complicated issue.</p>
<p>During her time at ECGC she was promoted from second-in-charge to branch head, and finally senior manager. Manpreet was also nominated as Young Professional Initiative member of <a href="https://www.berneunion.org/">Berne Union</a> in 2019. She said she felt honored to receive this recognition from such a well-known organization.</p>

<p>&#8220;ECGC and my organisation EEPCIndia, both under Ministry of Commerce &amp; Industry, used to collaborate on many occasions, to promote and organise export promotion and trade finance efforts for Exporters in Jalandhar (Northern India ).</p>
<p>She was in command of her subject and used to convince her clients by virtue of her understanding and knowledge of international trade. ECGC, which was a lesser known organisation to exporters in insurance sector, became a popular choice for exporters due to her ability to sell her ideas and services. I enjoyed the ease of working with her and wish her success in her future endeavours,” says Opinder Singh, Executive Senior Deputy Director, EEPCIndia New Delhi.</p>

<h2>How the CITP helped her relocate and get established in Canada</h2>
<p>Manpreet became interested in opportunities in Canada while liaising with <a href="https://www.edc.ca/">Export Development Canada (EDC)</a> in her previous role at ECGC. While working towards obtaining her Personal Residency in Canada, Manpreet was hired by Intact Financial Corporation in 2022. She felt incredibly fortunate that she was able to find a job in Canada before arriving in the country.</p>
<p>After moving to Canada, she decided that she wanted to earn a certification that would help validate her extensive experience in India and help her establish credibility in a new country. She opted for the CITP “because this exactly matches to what I was looking for to validate my experience and knowledge so far in my career.”</p>
<p>She connected with the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/contact-us">FITT’s certification team</a> and then completed the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification-process">Executive Path</a> to the CITP.</p>
<p>“I felt elated when I received the email that I have obtained the CITP/FIBP designation,” Manpreet said.</p>

<p>According to Manpreet, the component of CITPs’ commitment to ongoing professional development motivated her to continue to improve her knowledge. She hopes it positions her well for strategic positions and leadership roles in Canadian companies.</p>

<p>Manpreet has some great words of wisdom that she has seen play out in her own career:</p>
<p>“It&#8217;s your passion that drives you to do the work and your involvement that actually matters. If you have passion towards a field and you get into doing work that fascinates you, I think every person can do wonders in their field.</p>
<p>That’s how it’s worked for me. I was always fascinated by international trade from the day I did my masters I knew I wanted to do something in international business and I followed and chased my dreams.”</p>

<p>Meetali’s career in international trade began in 2015 when she transitioned from a global consulting firm in the private sector to the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-business-and-trade">UK’s Department for Business and Trade</a> in the public sector. In this role, she assisted British companies to enter and expand their operations in India, focusing on sectors like Financial Services and Energy.</p>
<p>“It was a complete shift from the private sector to an exciting world of international trade, export promotion, and market development where I generated businesses opportunities for British companies. I provided strategic advice and executed sector-specific trade promotion initiatives to help clients access opportunities, <a href="https://tradeready.ca/2020/featured-stories/forming-strategic-alliances/">establish strategic alliances</a> in the market, and grow their business in India.”</p>
<p>Meetali shares an example of her success: she helped a single-brand retailer get their FDI application approved to enter the Indian market, set up their brick-and-mortar stores, and sell their products. Over the next few years, the company invested more capital, generated strong sales revenue, created jobs, and went on to become a popular brand.</p>
<p>“I reflect on the role I played when I see their popularity in India. Over time, they established themselves as leaders in their product segment.&#8221;</p>

<h2>Contributing to UK-India trade relations post-Brexit</h2>

<p>The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brexit">2016 Brexit</a> marked a significant turning point for the UK and its trading partners. This transition necessitated a fresh approach to trade policies and agreements with countries like India. Meetali found new opportunities to leverage her expertise in the evolving landscape and progressed in her role, moving into market access and trade policy and working on government-to-government dialogues to champion equitable conditions for British businesses in India.</p>
<p>“I undertook policy advocacy work, engaged closely with the Government of India on behalf of the British government to advance the market access agenda for British companies. I worked as a core member of the policy team to create a level playing field for British businesses operating in the Indian market and resolved specific barriers related to ‘ease of doing business’ during my tenure.”</p>
<p>During that period, the UK began developing its independent trade policy with various countries, including India, which required extensive groundwork. This helped Meetali gain valuable experience and a deep understanding of the markets and governmental functions in both India and the UK.</p>
<p>Eager to expand her knowledge, Meetali chose to continue her work with other foreign governments, bringing her unique perspective to new challenges and building a career in the international trade arena.<strong> </strong></p>
<h2>Helping Canadian businesses expand in global markets</h2>
<p>In 2022, she joined the <a href="https://www.tradecommissioner.gc.ca/index.aspx?lang=eng">Trade Commissioner Service</a> with Global Affairs Canada, leading the infrastructure sector. In this role, she helped Canadian companies do business in India and was one of the youngest trade commissioners in Global Affairs Canada’s overseas network.</p>
<p>“I helped clients prepare for the overseas market. Factors such as <a href="https://tradeready.ca/explainer/mastering-the-art-of-competitor-analysis-a-comprehensive-guide/">competitor intelligence</a>, regulatory compliance, market knowledge, and understanding customer preferences were crucial. In certain sectors, the sales cycle can be long and requires commitment and perseverance from business owners.&#8221;</p>

<h2>Shifting markets, same client focus</h2>

<p>While working with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service from the New Delhi office, Meetali was inspired to make her biggest move yet and immigrate to Canada.</p>
<p>In 2023, Meetali settled in Toronto, Canada, where she found an excellent opportunity to tap into her skills as Market Advisor – Digital Tech for <a href="https://www.enterprise-ireland.com/en/">Enterprise Ireland</a>, the Irish Government agency responsible for supporting Irish businesses in global markets. In this role, she leads the digital technologies portfolio of clients in the cyber security and digital entertainment sectors in Canada, helping Irish innovators find meaningful partnerships with Canadian organizations.</p>
<p>Recently, Meetali attended the <a href="https://tiff.net/">Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)</a> to support an Irish client company in her portfolio. Later this month she will lead a delegation of Irish animation companies for a market study visit to Canada promoting co-production opportunities between Canadian and Irish studios developing their own IP.</p>
<p>Throughout her career, Meetali has found that keeping client interests as the primary focus is crucial in international trade. This might seem like straightforward good business sense, but it can be more challenging than it appears. Meetali explains how she applies this philosophy in her current role with Enterprise Ireland.</p>

<h2>Professional development and well-earned validation of expertise</h2>
<p>Meetali’s keen interest in <a href="https://tradeready.ca/2021/topics/demystifying-market-entry-strategy-the-three-key-parts-of-an-effective-asean-entry-strategy/">market entry strategy</a> and the various options available to companies looking at international expansion is evident in her career. As she progressed through the six courses in the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/edc-fitt-online-courses">FITTskills program</a>, she particularly enjoyed the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/international-market-entry-strategies">International Market Entry Strategies course</a>.</p>
<p>“My favourite course was International Market Entry Strategies. It was designed in a way that was very engaging. The structure of the course modules and sub-topics was quite interesting. Discussing <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/content/selecting-market-entry-strategy">different routes to market</a>, types of investments, or options like greenfield or brownfield, direct or indirect channels, joint ventures, mergers, or acquisitions, has enhanced my ability to provide strategic advice to our Irish companies weighing their options in market entry.&#8221;</p>

<p>It was an enthusiastic interest in interacting with people from countries around the world that fuelled Romi Jaszczynski’s career choice – <strong>helping businesses go global.</strong> Romi’s  international trade career began soon after he completed his Master’s studies in 2014, when he joined the trade and investment team at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw.</p>
<p>“<em>I was always interested in working with businesses expanding internationally, and this opportunity allowed me to confirm I chose the right path!”</em></p>
<p>Some of Romi’s most memorable experiences happened whilst working with the Ontario Government when he travelled across Ontario delivering export workshops to SMEs looking for new markets. This tenure taught him a lot about how to tweak the program based on specific pain points, making him look forward to another opportunity to teach sometime in the future.</p>

<p>Meeting Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley during a 4-week temporary duty assignment in Las Vegas, attending a Blue Jays game with the Governor of Utah and even hanging out with Paris Hilton in a little-known industrial city in Poland are a few of Romi’s favorite career stories.</p>

<h3>Romi’s proudest accomplishments</h3>
<p>“<em>The most interesting project I have worked on has to be the U.S. President’s Export Council trade mission to Poland. It was one of the first projects I had a chance to work on and is still the greatest learning experience I’ve had.”</em></p>
<p>The visit took place at a crucial time for Poland, when it was looking to expand its defence capabilities. It was the largest trade mission in the history of U.S.-Poland relations and the attendees included important delegates like the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the CEOs of North America’s largest companies. The project was a great experience as it gave him a chance to sit in on meetings and manage aspects of the mission and logistics, presenting him with the opportunity to learn best practices from some of the most influential business figures in the world.</p>
<p>“<em>As far as other projects, collaborating with businesses to successfully bring their product to a new market is among the most challenging and rewarding accomplishments</em>!”</p>

<h3>A valuable piece of career advice</h3>
<p>The single most important takeaway from his career so far, according to Romi is to “<em>find your niche and become really good at it. You will never know everything about everything.”</em></p>
<p>It is this mantra that guided him towards taking <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/edc-fitt-online-training">FITTskills business training courses</a> and earning <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/credentials">industry recognised credentials</a> in international trade. Romi particularly enjoyed being able to learn on his own time and applying real life examples from work to the course questions and exercises.</p>

<p class="end-quote">“<a href="https://fittfortrade.com/feasibility-international-trade"><em>Feasibility of International Trade</em></a><em> was my favourite course because it highlights the importance of patience and preparation when it comes to expanding internationally. I think we all know of businesses which were eager to expand internationally without conducting proper due diligence and capacity assessments. I think this is probably the most important course out of all of them.”</p>

<p>Romi went on to earn the FITT Diploma in International Trade and soon after, decided to apply for, and was successfully awarded, the <a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification"><strong>CITP®|FIBP® designation.</strong></a></p>
<p><em>“It was the next step in continuing my learning within the international trade field. It is also the only certification program within the area. Heard about it through the Ontario Government.”</em></p>
<p><a href="https://fittfortrade.com/certification-process">The CITP designation</a> has opened the doors for Romi to continue building the network, as he enjoys the opportunity to connect with other CITPs.</p>
