The Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation came to fruition through a comparable void. For years, the knowledge required to operate confidently in global commerce—importing and exporting, market entry, finance, supply chains, customs, logistics—was scattered across industries, government agencies, and hard-won, on-the-job trial and error. As one of FITT’s founders put it, the field urgently needed structure and coherence—and, quite simply, there “ought to be a better way to learn” how to do international trade the right way. 

But now, in an era with many different courses, academic learning offerings, certifications, designations, degrees, doctorates and beyond, how do you know which learning paths will create impact for your career trajectory? And how do you know which ones are legitimate? The answers begin with understanding each credential’s purpose. 

The rise of verifiable, standardized skills

Across industries, the upskilling trend is unmistakable. According to the Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD), demand for workforce credentials has grown steadily over the past decade as employers try to assess skills in an environment of rapid change. The World Economic Forum has reported similarly, emphasizing that “skills are the new currency” when addressing “how vital competencies have become in today’s rapidly evolving world.” 

International trade, where decisions often hinge on regulatory risk, multimillion-dollar shipments, and cross-border contracts, has felt this pressure acutely. 

It’s no longer enough to simply “learn on the job,” several CITPs note.

As markets expand and rules become more intricate, companies are seeking evidence that professionals not only understand international business but can apply it responsibly.

And that is where designations enter the picture. 

Degrees, diplomas, certificates, and professional designations: what’s the difference?

The credential ecosystem can feel confusing, particularly for newcomers, because each type of training sits at a different layer of learning. In reality, they aren’t interchangeable. They serve different purposes in a career. 

Degrees (BA, BCom, MBA) offer broad, conceptual grounding in business and take several years to complete. They’re valuable for leadership and strategy roles, but often too general to prepare someone for technical trade functions such as compliance, logistics, export operations, or customs management. 

Diplomas narrow the focus. Typically, one to two years, they emphasize applied learning and often include co-ops or internships that prepare graduates for operational roles or entry-level analyst positions. 

Certificates and short courses fill specific knowledge gaps. Whether it’s a course on Incoterms®, customs procedures, or supply chain management, these programs sharpen skills quickly — but rarely function as comprehensive proof of professional capability. 

Professional designations, like the CITP, sit at the top of this structure. They require verified experience meeting all designated competency categories, validating not just what someone knows but what they can reliably do in real-world trade environments. They are often used by employers to evaluate readiness for higher-stakes decision-making and must be continuously maintained, signaling a commitment to lifelong learning. 

Trade professionals often hold a blend of all these. But the designation carries a distinct message: “I can do this in practice consistently, ethically, and to international standards.”

Why experienced professionals seek the CITP

Credibility and new connections

For Kingsley Borello, CITP, the designation was about belonging and credibility in a new market. When he moved to Canada, he needed to open more doors, despite having a storied career that spanned from West Africa to Singapore to the United States. The CITP became a way to formalize decades of international business experience in a recognizable, standardized way: 

“Being a newcomer with a limited network versus my wider international relationships, I feel that the CITP designation brings more awareness of my professional background and capabilities, especially in Canada.”

A cohesive program and designation with practical skill applications

Abbas Sumar, CITP, Principal of Sumar + Associates Ltd, spent years working on trade, diplomacy, and development at the federal level, supporting major international initiatives. But he saw the CITP as a differentiator that also carried weight within academia.

“I have a very different educational background (Environmental Science), so I was looking for recognition. The CITP designation provides that recognition and empowers me with knowledge to do better.”

He adds that the designation “will keep me aligned with the high standards of excellence and quality that I have to follow and maintain while working with my clients in international trade.”

For Ana Rosetephane Quilas-Nassif, CITP, Manager for Corporate and Executive Governance, Board Affairs, Soluis Group, the FITTskills courses and CITP designation gave her a “structured, in-depth understanding of international trade.”

She feels the courses complemented her hands-on experience by giving her “the frameworks and methodologies needed to approach trade challenges more strategically.” 

She adds that she applied for the CITP because,

For Ramon Pinto, earning his CITP designation was a major “milestone” to add to his many years of entrepreneurial success. As Founder, President, and CEO of SOLUPAPER, he built his company from a $60K operation into a multimillion-dollar cross-border business.  

He pursued the CITP because it anchored his global credibility. 

“Being part of such a well-recognized organization, coupled with the extensive experience I’ve gained, marks a major milestone in my career.”

For Banksharon Nwaneri, Commercial Specialist, U.S. Department of Commerce, the skills earned from the FITTskills program are useful in a practical context:

“What appealed most to me was how it validates not just knowledge, but also the ability to apply complex trade principles, from regulatory compliance to financial logistics, not just in theory, but on real-world projects.”  

Working across finance, development, education, and finally the U.S. Department of Commerce, Banksharon believes that earning his CITP also will help him open new opportunities in his daily work: “I foresee it opening new doors in new markets,” he notes. 

What recruiters and employers actually look for today

While requirements vary by sector, several patterns consistently appear in recent employer surveys from Deloitte, ManpowerGroup, and The World Economic Forum:  

1. Demonstrated ability to work across jurisdictions

Trade law, compliance, market entry, and logistics require fluency in cross-border rules. Recruiters frequently look for: 

• FITTskills training 
• CITP designation 
• Specific customs, compliance, or logistics certifications, such as those offered by CITT.  

2. Evidence of applied experience—not just theory

Employers increasingly value: 

• Practicums 
• Internships 
• Case-based credentials 
• Designations that require work experience 

3. Risk management and financial literacy

The WEF’s Future of Jobs report notes that supply chain risk, geopolitics, and financial management have moved to the centre of business decision-making. This aligns closely with FITTskills and CITP competency areas. 

4. Adaptability and multi-skill versatility

Trade is increasingly about being able to move from one area of focus to another. When ports are inaccessible, the focus is on logistics and risk mitigation execution; when political sanctions or tariffs impede the flow of goods and services to markets, market diversification and new procurement strategies take centre stage.

Professionals who can understand and apply their skills in all of these areas have an upper hand.

That’s why many of the world’s largest companies actively seek out credentials like the CITP in job postings, or they actively increase salary ranges for employees who undergo the rigorous training and certification process. 

The new professional landscape

The modern trade career is layered:

In a labour market shaped by volatility, employers want all four—but only the designation says, definitively, “this person has done this work at a professional level.”

When Patrizia Giuliotti graduated in international relations from Rome’s La Sapienza University, she could not have predicted that her career would eventually span trade policy, market access, export finance, climate issues, energy transition and high-level diplomacy.

“I could not have imagined the professional journey that lay ahead,” she says.

Today, Patrizia is a Trade Commissioner at the Embassy of Canada to Italy and Global Affairs Canada. Her work has evolved alongside some of the most important issues shaping global trade, from European market access to critical raw materials security. After 30 years in the field, earning the Certified International Trade Professional designation, CITP, became both a personal milestone and a validation of the expertise she had built.

“The CITP designation represents a meaningful recognition of the work accomplished and the competencies developed over the course of a 30-year career,” she says.

“It is important not only on a personal level, but also for the people and organizations you serve, as the CITP stands as a testament to one’s professional credibility and expertise.”

Finding her path in international trade

Patrizia’s interest in international trade began to take shape during a year in the United States as a Fulbright scholar.

“That experience exposed me to the complexities of trade policy, international finance, and global economic dynamics, sparking a deep interest in how countries and markets interact beyond borders,” she says.

After returning to Rome, she began her career in export credit services at an American merchant bank. The role gave her early exposure to the financial tools and practical mechanisms that support international business.

“It was an invaluable learning experience that helped bridge the gap between theory and practice.”

That combination of policy knowledge and practical business understanding would become a defining part of her career. In 1995, Patrizia joined the Canadian Embassy in Rome as an assistant in the trade section. She soon transitioned into the role of Trade Commissioner, beginning a long career rooted in trade policy, market access and sector-specific expertise.

Over the years, her work has covered commodities, agri-food, seafood, forestry, climate and energy. It has also included direct engagement with Canadian exporters, strategic advocacy and the organization of high-level business roundtables, including one held for Canada’s Prime Minister in 2017.

“The diversity of these experiences ensured that my work was never repetitive and allowed me to continuously engage with evolving global challenges,” she says.

Where detail shapes outcomes

Some of Patrizia’s most memorable career moments have come from representing Canada’s interests in negotiations with the European Union. Even while working with colleagues across different European capitals, she remembers a strong sense of collaboration and shared purpose.

“Together, we worked to raise concerns, align positions, and shape outcomes that reflected Canada’s priorities,” she says.

A particularly defining moment came in 2000, when Canada signed the Wine & Spirit Agreement with the EU, a precursor to what would later become the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, CETA. The negotiations came down to resolving a dispute over a single word that differentiated “Grappa” from “Ice Grappa.”

“That experience perfectly illustrated how nuanced, technical, and yet impactful trade negotiations can be.”

For Patrizia, experiences like this reinforced how much international trade depends on precision. A single term can influence market access, commercial interests and long-term relationships. Her career has been shaped by that balance between technical detail and broader strategic impact.

As her responsibilities grew, she also became involved in ministerial visits and sector-specific side programs under the Italian G7 Presidency. The work kept her close to the evolving priorities of governments and businesses, while reinforcing the global relevance of trade diplomacy.

Building expertise in an emerging field

About 20 years ago, Patrizia was entrusted with a file that was still considered relatively minor: environmental goods and services. At the time, concepts such as ESG and climate change were mostly confined within academic and scientific circles.

Recognizing the potential of the field, she pursued a graduate program in Global Environmental Policies at the University of Viterbo, in collaboration with Italy’s Ministry of the Environment.

“That decision proved transformative,” she says.

It repositioned her as an advisor and subject-matter expert on environmental, climate change and energy issues, while allowing her to continue supporting Canadian cleantech companies operating in Italy.

“I became increasingly convinced that understanding the science behind climate phenomena is essential in order to balance social, economic, and environmental priorities.”

That perspective has guided her recent work on Canada-Italy cooperation in areas such as energy transition and critical raw materials security. Key milestones have included the Canada-Italy Roadmap for Advanced Cooperation, joint statements on critical raw materials, structured energy dialogues and bilateral agreements in the hydrogen and nuclear sectors.

“As policy professionals, we carry responsibilities that transcend national borders,” she says. “In my view, our decisions must ultimately serve the planet as a whole, not just individual or short-term interests.”

Strengthening practical knowledge through FITTskills

Even with significant experience in the field, Patrizia found that FITTskills helped sharpen and structure her understanding of international business from the company perspective.

“I thoroughly enjoyed taking the FITTskills courses,” she says. “They helped structure my theoretical knowledge while also providing concrete, practical examples of the work companies must undertake to expand internationally.”

For a public servant working in trade, that practical focus was especially useful. Trade commissioners support companies operating in real markets, where strategy must translate into action.

“As a public servant, it is sometimes easy to become somewhat removed from everyday market realities, and the FITTskills courses helped bridge that gap.”

Her favourite course was Global Supply Chain Management because of its connection to trade policy, geopolitics and macroeconomic dynamics. The subject aligned closely with the forces she has spent much of her career navigating.

After decades of professional experience, Patrizia chose to apply for the CITP designation to validate the competencies she had developed across policy, diplomacy, sector expertise and client service.

“I was truly thrilled to receive the designation,” she says. “It was a significant personal endeavor, particularly while working full time on major files and responsibilities.”

She is quick to credit her family for their support throughout the process.

“I am especially grateful to my husband, Walter, and my children, Giulia Fiorile and Adriano, for their unwavering support and patience during those studying weekends,” she says.

For Patrizia, earning the designation was not simply about career advancement. It was a way to formally recognize a body of work built over many years and to reinforce the credibility that is essential in international trade.

That credibility matters because trade professionals are often trusted to advise companies, represent national interests, support market access and help organizations navigate complex decisions.

The CITP designation signals that this work is backed by recognized standards and proven expertise.

Advice for the next generation of trade professionals

Looking back, Patrizia believes flexibility and adaptability are essential in international trade. But she also encourages professionals to build deep expertise in a specific area.

“Long-term career development greatly benefits from cultivating deep expertise in a specific sector,” she says. “Specialization allows you to add greater value, build credibility, and help companies and organizations go beyond surface-level engagement to achieve more strategic outcomes.”

Her own path reflects that advice. By developing expertise in environmental goods and services, climate policy, energy and critical raw materials, she positioned herself to contribute meaningfully as global priorities shifted.

She has also learned that impact often requires patience. Navigating internal processes can be challenging, but she recognizes their role in supporting transparency, accountability and better outcomes.

As one mentor told her, “We need to oil the system.”

Sharing experience through teaching and mentorship

After 30 years in international trade, Patrizia is still thinking about how she can contribute next.

“I have always felt that one day I would like to share my experience with others, whether through teaching, mentoring, or participating in conferences,” she says.

The CITP designation gives her a strong foundation for that next chapter.

Patrizia’s career shows how international trade can evolve from policy and finance into diplomacy, sector specialization and global problem-solving. It also shows the value of recognized professional credibility in a field where decisions carry weight across borders.

For Patrizia, becoming a CITP is both a milestone and a platform for what comes next: continuing to share knowledge, support meaningful international cooperation and contribute to a profession that remains as dynamic as ever.

The seeds for a career in international trade were planted at a young age for Joshua Boileau. Watching his family’s steadfast work ethic as a young boy made international trade a natural extension of the values he was raised upon. 

“I grew up in a household of blue-collar workers who instilled a sense of work excellence and dedication that inspired me to work in a career that amplified those skills. With international trade, I saw the connections with work ethic, dedication, and attention to detail.”

To him, work such as navigating regulations, supply chains, and cultural differences requires commitment, and for international businesses they are the glue that holds everything together. 

Joshua saw parallels between how international trade operated and how his family negotiated contracts, maintained client trust, and ensured quality. These similarities cemented his choice to pursue trade as a career path. 

Seeing the scale of world trade in action

Experiencing the scale of global trade, especially when it came to product management and marketing, was a favourite part of Joshua’s storied career. “I watched as live orders came in from international markets I’ve never been to. There was something deeply rewarding about knowing that a product team in Ottawa could be making an impact so far from home,” he says. 

Working at Shopify marked another pivotal chapter in his path, one that taught him a powerful lesson about perseverance. After the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Shopify waived platform fees for Ukrainian merchants and Joshua saw firsthand the resilience of entrepreneurs in crisis while he helped Ukrainian merchants set up their online stores.  

“It was inspiring to see fashion, food, health and wellness, and retail shops pop up. A resilience through war and the pandemic.” These experiences broadened his understanding of what trade can achieve, not just operationally, but on a deeply human level. 

Pivoting small businesses in times of change

Joshua regards reacting to tariffs as one of the most interesting aspects of his career.

“Pivoting a business is incredibly difficult, especially in a small business environment. I feel the weight of change much more immensely than if I worked in a large company.”

But, by shifting focus to new markets, he has been able to help his employer open new and interesting paths. “Interacting with new international regulatory bodies, creating international market entry analyses, and creating international marketing plans has been stressful but rewarding,” he says. 

Start with the basics

For anyone entering the field of international trade, Joshua has one piece of advice that he learned from the current leadership at White Cross, James Dumont:

“You need to learn how to crawl before you can run.” 

International trade, he believes, demands patience, commitment, and a desire to do things the right way, at the right times.  

Learning from instructors filled with passion

Joshua completed the FITTskills program through Algonquin College, one of FITT’s educational partners. His favourite part of the FITTskills program was the people who taught it. 

“The professors had so many years of experience, skills, and cultural awareness that it exuded out of them.” 

He credits the courses with deepening his intercultural understanding, a critical skill in both e-commerce and global operations. 

“I came to realize that the classic business etiquette you see in other fields was dwarfed by the intercultural relationships in international trade.”

His favourite course, International Sales & Marketing, was particularly influential. Inspired by a professor who “had a passion for business and marketing that helped us find our own pulse in international trade,” Joshua pursued an optional co-op placement in South Africa, where he experienced culture shock, global marketing dynamics, and the intricacies of international marketing firsthand. 

These lessons would come into play later in his career at Shopify, where he saw “the power of international trade resilience, adapting to a new global norm in e-commerce.” 

Why he pursued the CITP designation

For Joshua, the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation represents something essential in today’s world: credibility. 

“There’s something to be said about credibility in a world that has shifted to creating policies and legislation backed by non-credibility. I want to have a credible voice, backed by a world-recognized professional organization, when dealing with international brands, brokers, reps, and supply chains.”

His comments highlight how, increasingly, designations like the CITP instill confidence in both the professionals who earn them and the partners who work with these professionals, creating a win-win scenario for both. 

Earning the designation also felt meaningful and forward-looking for Joshua. 

“I’m excited about where the CITP designation will lead me. I’m passionate about integrating international trade and my degree in sustainability.” 

Looking ahead: a global vision for e-commerce

Now, as E-Commerce Manager for an online pharmacy retailer, Joshua sees enormous potential for international diversification and the CITP designation strengthens that vision. 

“I see my CITP designation extending my current role in E-Commerce Management in online pharmacy retail. There is a lot of work to do in diversifying our international markets.”

With a blend of technical expertise, global awareness, and human-centred values, Joshua is poised to help shape the future of ethical, sustainable, and globally connected commerce.

Emmanuel Ediale’s path into international trade was built on early exposure to global operations and a growing desire to understand the mechanics that power cross-border business. From the get-go, he knew what he wanted to do. 

“My career in international trade began immediately after college with a finance role at a logistics company,” he explains. “I was responsible for managing the financial aspects of cross-border logistics operations, as well as other business activities the company was engaged in at the time.” 

This early experience gave him a practical foundation in trade finance, operational risk, and the movement of goods across borders, knowledge that would influence every step of his career moving forward. 

Growth, standards, and developing trust along the way

Looking back, Emmanuel’s favourite professional moments are tied not just to milestones, but to momentum. 

“Managing a project from inception to completion, participating in the transition from existing standards to new or revised standards, for example, IFRS 4 to IFRS 17 (an International Financial Reporting Standard for accounting) for major financial institutions, and maintaining positive relationships with colleagues throughout my career.” These are all among some of his favourite aspects of his work journey. 

These efforts showcase Emmanuel’s ability to leverage his financial expertise, international trade background, and business acumen to create measurable value while strengthening operational efficiency and supporting strategic decision-making within forward-thinking organizations.

His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed either. Among Emmanuel’s proudest accomplishments are garnering recognition as the “best employee” at his firm’s year-end celebrations, in addition to consistently earning performance-based bonuses from past organizations he’s worked for. More importantly, he’s proud to have served “as a trusted and positive reference point for both customers and colleagues.” 

These acknowledgments reflect not only his technical strength, but also his reputation for reliability and integrity—qualities that have followed him from one position to the next. 

Career advice: reach out for resources

International trade is filled with resources, networks, and specialized institutions. But like many professionals entering the field, Emmanuel didn’t know how much support existed. 

“One thing I wish I knew earlier was the role of EDC (Export Development Canada) and other crown corporations to SMEs… people tend not to have an idea of resources available to them for both their business and sales expansion. This was an eye-opener for me.”

Understanding these tools (financing, insurance, risk mitigation, and global market guidance) shifted how he viewed trade and expanded what he thought was possible for Canadian businesses. 

How FITTskills shaped his understanding of global business

When Emmanuel enrolled in the FITTskills program, it marked a turning point in how he approached international trade. “These courses have helped my career significantly, especially in understanding major trade concepts. The knowledge I’ve applied so far has been invaluable.” 

He completed courses in international trade, business finance, sales, and marketing—each giving him a new lens through which to understand global operations. But one course stood above the rest: 

“International Market Entry Strategies was my favorite course. I believe this was the background to understanding the map flow of international trade. The professor who taught the course was awesome, and it was really easy to follow through the coursework and complete all assessments as at when due.”

The coursework expanded his analytical toolkit, sharpened his understanding of global competitiveness, and strengthened the strategic mindset he brings to his work today. 

Why he pursued the CITP designation

Like many professionals, Emmanuel wanted a way to formalize his expertise and stand out. “I chose to apply for the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) to compete ethically amongst other professionals in trade as well as collaborate with other great minds through the CITP community.” 

An accomplished trade professional with deep knowledge already, he views the designation as a gratifying experience. “I feel so fulfilled and honoured. It has been a long journey, so touching the finish line is rewarding to me.” 

The CITP has already begun shaping his long-term ambitions too. 

“I see my CITP designation paving the way for me in the trade industry in its entirety. I believe I stand a good chance of being an international diplomat, trade commissioner or advisor and a general business mogul when the time is right.”

A depth and breadth of skill, and a bright future ahead

In his current role at Unibrew, Emmanuel is making use of his FITTskills training, specifically in bringing in the financial aspects related to greenfield and brownfield market expansion. 

With a strong record of driving results across the banking, insurance, retail, telecommunications, logistics and food & beverage sectors and a career that spans key areas such as underwriting, business management, capital budgeting, financial analysis and reporting, risk assessment and more, there is no doubt that Emannuel will continue to lead the way in finance and trade in his current role at Royal Unibrew.

Audrey Ross, CITP, for example, decided to go for the CITP based on the advice of her instructor. She was already in university when she landed a job role that dealt with the inner workings of international trade.

“I got this job and I was enjoying it. I got to work on everything from product development and global sourcing to procurement and buying and doing style specs and costing and all these fun things. Then, I decided about 5 or 6 years into my work that I wanted something external to have more market knowledge, because I was getting a lot of great knowledge internally, but I wanted that external professional information.”

She signed up for an Advanced International Trade Certificate at George Brown College in Toronto and started doing classes on evenings and weekends. She didn’t realize it at the time, but the courses she was taking were FITT accredited. She found them to be interesting and hands-on, giving her more insight into the practical applications of international trade on an international level. About 9-10 courses in, she decided to ask her instructor for advice:

“I said to him ‘What do you recommend my next step be career-wise? Should I really buckle down and do a degree or an MBA, what do you think? He turned to me and said, ‘You need to get your FITT Diploma and become a CITP.’ I was really anxious about not having a degree, and he was like ‘No. You don’t need that. You want this professional designation because it’s well recognized, you’re going to meet great people, it’s a great community and it’s international. It’s not just focused on what’s happening locally. It’s completely international.’”

This turned out to be the right decision for Audrey. She has now been working in the field of international trade at Orchard Beauty for over 20 years and has been a CITP for 7.

“The FITT program is so comprehensive. It really covers such a good breadth of what you’re going to experience in business. Many people don’t fully grasp business on a global scale until they begin running one themselves. For Nathaly Mesa, CITP, years of running small businesses opened the door to international opportunities—and sparked a new fascination. As she applied her business management background in a global context, it became clear that international trade was the natural next step in her career. 

“I began my journey in international trade out of a deep interest in global markets and how businesses expand across borders,” she explains, adding that, while running businesses, “I often encountered opportunities that involved international clients and suppliers. This sparked my curiosity and motivated me to explore the field further.”

Nathaly is a fan of international business and green practices, so when she had the opportunity to work with a sustainable furniture company, she jumped at the chance. 

“One of my favourite stories from my career was working with a furniture company whose concept immediately caught my attention,” she says.

Nathaly reflects on another project with pride, one that was significant to her—not only from a business perspective but on a cultural and personal level too.  

Working with artisans from her home country, she led internationalization campaigns for their handcrafted products: 

“I worked closely with local artisans, whose incredible craftsmanship reflects Colombia’s rich cultural heritage. Through hard work, strategic planning, and a deep respect for their work, we were able to introduce these unique products into demanding international markets in Europe and North America.” 

“Seeing them embraced abroad was incredibly rewarding,” she reflects. “It confirmed my belief in the value of combining international trade with cultural preservation and ethical business practices.” 

This work underscores her approach to trade not simply as a means of profit, but as a platform to elevate culture, sustainability, and community empowerment.

Looking back, Nathaly now understands the importance of cultural competence and relationship-building in business. It is a lesson she wishes to impart to new professionals in the field of trade. 

“One piece of advice I wish I had known when I started working in international trade is the importance of building strong cross-cultural relationships from the very beginning.”

She goes on to explain that, early on in her career, she placed heavy focus on logistics, compliance, and strategy, “which are, of course, critical,” she emphasizes. “But I later realized that understanding cultural nuances and building genuine trust with international partners can be just as important for long-term success.”

As a young newcomer to Canada, navigating both a new country and profession, Sajal Takhi learned an important lesson about professional success: behind every shipment, every cross-border lane, and every international contract are people. And to connect with them, you need to understand their needs and challenges.

With over seven years of experience in asset-based transportation, plus a CITP certification and a Master’s in Finance, Sajal has combined his learning with practice to become the expert that he is today.

A natural calling to logistics and transportation

Sajal’s journey into international trade began naturally. He started by coordinating shipments across Canada and the U.S., managing complex cross-border operations and building relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors. Through this work, he became fascinated by the intricacies of global trade, whether it was handling customs clearance documentation, resolving business disputes, or managing financial risks associated with international transactions. Every challenge and every complex detail drew him in.

Sajal began actively building stronger relationships. “I realized that by understanding and valuing the perspectives of those around me, I could build stronger relationships and navigate workplace dynamics more effectively. These skills have become foundational to my professional approach, as I believe that empathy and kindness are key to connecting with others and achieving success.”

Throughout his logistics career, Sajal has contributed to several major projects that improved operational efficiency and drove business expansion.

Notable achievements include winning contracts from major clients such as Burnac Produce and High Liner Foods. These achievements were the result of strategic business planning, negotiation expertise, and strong customer management skills.

“By analyzing market trends, optimizing freight routes, and aligning our service offerings with client needs, I was able to present value-driven proposals that secured these lucrative contracts.”

Another milestone came during the expansion of Sharp Express Inc., where Sajal expanded Sharp Express Inc.’s market presence by diversifying operations beyond traditional reefer loads into dry freight, auto parts, and electronics. “I proactively identified new opportunities, optimized our pricing strategies, and successfully mitigated risks associated with seasonal fluctuations in demand,” he says.

When asked what he wishes he’d known at the start of his career, Sajal answerswith confidence:

How the CITP is shaping his future

Since earning the CITP, Sajal has honed his international trade skills for a rounded view of logistics, finance, and risk mitigation, all assets he applies to his current role of operations team lead at A.P. Moller – Maersk. Whether he’s ensuring flawless coordination between shippers, carriers, and internal teams to meet OTP targets or reconciling load-level financials, including accessorial, fuel surcharges, and margin analysis to support financial operations, he is using his expertise and deep industry knowledge every day.

His efforts have even led to award recognition within the company—an achievement that motivates him to keep pushing boundaries and deliver excellence in the industry.

Though he is still early in his career, Sajal has accomplished a lot already. He’s won major contracts for clients, accomplished seamless logistics coordination for the world’s biggest shipping companies, and he’s attained major academic and professional milestones. Through it all, he has learned that success in international trade is not just about moving goods efficiently—it’s about understanding people, managing uncertainty, and thinking globally.

Some careers are carefully planned. Others unfold through unexpected turns, revealing exactly where someone is meant to be. For Godwin Aigbokhan, CITP, international trade began with a happenstance job opportunity with a friend.

“I entered the field of international trade by accident. I used to work in the development sector, specializing in private sector development. One day, a vacancy arose in an organization I was affiliated with, and a friend of mine resigned to join the development organization I was working for at the time. So, essentially, we switched roles,” he states. 

That chance transition opened the door to what would become a deeply impactful trade career that now sees him facilitating bilateral trade between Canadian and Nigerian companies with the Trade Commissioner Service, a position he’s been in for over 3 years. 

Showcasing adaptability in business during COVID-19

One of Godwin’s most memorable career moments occurred during a period of global crisis: COVID-19. With borders closed and companies unsure of their next move, Godwin helped design a fully virtual model for engagement. 

“During the pandemic, I organized both a virtual delegation trip and a virtual trade show. It was a fascinating experience as there was no template to guide my team.”

Over 1,000 participants from five countries joined the online trade show, an extraordinary number for a first-time digital event. Even more remarkable, several companies that learned about Nigeria for the first time through the show have since executed several projects in the country.

In a moment defined by uncertainty, Godwin created a new pathway for partnership and proved his sharp skill for innovation and adaptability within the world of trade. 

Finding hidden opportunities for good

Throughout his career, Godwin has discovered a unique strength: the ability to identify connections and commercial possibilities that aren’t obvious at first glance. 

“I believe I have a talent for identifying obscure opportunities across different industries.”

For him, the most rewarding moments come when companies validate those introductions—turning “hidden” opportunities into tangible impact. 

An example of this talent at work came with the development of a digital circular-economy marketplace. The project “allowed for the categorization and trading of household waste on an individual basis and diverted waste from landfills,” he states. His work relied on innovative trade models and showed how these can directly support sustainability and community development. 

Advice for trade professionals: Be adaptable—it will serve you well

International trade is rarely linear and Godwin learned early that rigid plans do not survive long in fast-moving environments. 

“

If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be to be adaptable, because the best-laid plans mean nothing if you can’t implement them. I learned this during the pandemic.”

Able to pivot and thrive during these circumstances himself, his advice proves useful in the current trade ecosystem. 

Affirming his experience through FITTskills training

Godwin’s experience with the FITTskills program helped clarify and validate all the hands-on work he’s undertaken throughout his career.

“Taking the FITTskills courses was a truly affirmative experience for me, as I was able to fit almost every activity I have undertaken in my career into the frameworks and models I learnt about during the courses. This made me feel as though none of my previous work was random. I am very grateful for this experience.”

His favourite course—International Market Entry Strategies—felt especially familiar. “I have actually, in one way or another, implemented all of the strategies in my career,” he says, adding that he loved being able to connect each strategy to a specific activity and company in his work history. 

The power of competence with a CITP

Godwin was inspired to get his Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation because he wanted to project a high level of trade aptitude. “As an international trade professional, I want to project a certain level of competence,” he says, adding that “Earning the CITP designation would enhance my profile and help me to achieve this.” 

Not an easy feat to achieve, he feels “very proud” to have gained the designation and he sees it opening new doors for him within his organization. He also hopes that with it, he can play a role in helping his home country flourish with trade.  

“Currently, Africa represents only 3% of global trade, and Nigeria, my home country, has one of the lowest trade-to-GDP figures in the world at just 2%. I believe that by creating platforms for businesses to connect and discover hidden trade opportunities, it will be possible to create jobs, increase incomes, and improve living standards across the continent.”

A future focused on global growth

With a blend of development experience, trade insight, and a gift for uncovering unseen opportunities, Godwin is charting a path that bridges public policy, private enterprise, and international collaboration. 

His work proves that trade is far more than transactions. It is a mechanism for reshaping economies, elevating communities, and widening doors for countries poised for growth.

For Samatha Richards, CITP her journey in international trade began with intention, determination, and a clear passion for global business. Her path started in the classroom at Nova Scotia Community College, where she completed an advanced associate degree in 2019—training that would form the foundation for her career in global logistics and trade.

“My career in international trade began with an academic journey at the Nova Scotia Community College,” she explains. “Following my studies, I was successful in securing a position with a company specializing in international trade in 2021 and have continued to work in the field since.”

From her first days in the industry, Samatha found herself drawn to the complexity of imports and exports—particularly the problem-solving mindset needed to navigate documentation, regulations, and risk.

“I’ve found that solving client issues and managing documentation, risk assessment, and management for imports and exports has been incredibly formative. These experiences have built a level of resilience and an ability to work under pressure that I couldn’t have gained in any other way.”

Thinking critically, solving problems, and shaping client success

Early in her career, Samatha learned how even small decisions in global logistics can create significant impacts for clients. “I recall meticulously analyzing global shipping routes and advising a key international client on a new, more efficient mode of transport,” she says. Her recommendation led to a significant reduction in transit time for her client’s goods, which directly impacted their market entry timeline and strengthened their relationship.

This combination of analytical thinking, operational insight, and client-focused service has become a defining feature of her approach.

She is particularly proud of how quickly she’s been able to take on responsibility and deliver meaningful impact. Within only a few years, she’s handled multiple clients and developed an “ability to help identify new lanes and opportunities that have been instrumental to my company’s growth and profitability.”

Learning to balance theory with thinking on your feet

International trade is a field often mistaken for being rule-based and predictable, but Samatha learned quickly that the reality is far more dynamic.

“When I began, I thought success was about memorizing every tariff code, trade agreement, and customs form,” she explains. “While that knowledge is essential, I quickly learned that the reality of international trade is far messier.”

She clarifies that every shipment is unique, and unexpected issues are inevitable, whether they’re port delays, documentation errors, or external circumstances.

Instead, she now sees adaptability, communication, and strong relationships as the critical components to success: “Being able to communicate clearly and calmly with clients, customs brokers, and freight forwarders to navigate a crisis is often more impactful than having every rule memorized.”

“Your clients will value your ability to solve their problems more than your encyclopedic knowledge of trade law.”

She credits skills like thinking on your feet, digging for answers, and being able to build strong relationships with everyone in the supply chain as real keys to success.

Her insight is one shared by experienced trade professionals around the world: clients remember the people who solve problems, not the ones who simply recite regulations.

Why she pursued the CITP designation

“For a professional, this designation acts as a powerful signal to clients and employers, demonstrating that you have met a rigorous set of industry-validated standards.”

“It adds an immediate layer of trust and credibility, which is essential for building a successful career in a field where navigating complex risks and regulations is the core function.”

She also admires how it is a globally recognized credential, one that signifies a high level of expertise and commitment to ethical conduct. But earning it was more than just about what it signalled to others—it was also a significant milestone that validated her expertise and hard work.

“Achieving this credential felt like the culmination of my academic and professional journey in international trade,” she says, adding that the rigorous process required to earn the designation, from meeting the experience requirements to passing the comprehensive exam, made the achievement feel earned and meaningful. “It confirmed that my skills were not just valuable to my clients and employers but also met a global standard of excellence.”

A strong foundation for a global future

Looking ahead, Samatha sees the CITP as a defining asset in her career development.
“I foresee the CITP designation being a cornerstone of my future career in several key ways, serving as a platform for growth, specialization, and leadership.”

With a sharp analytical mind, dedication to client success, and advanced global trade credentials, Samatha is well-positioned to pursue leadership roles, expand into specialized areas of trade, or guide companies entering new markets.
